ActionKid, I would love to have a wall map to mark where I have "walked" with you but I can't find a suitable one. Can you help? Your videos are a dream come true for me! I have never had the chance to visit, but thanks to you, I have seen so much of the greatest city in the USA!
Interesting part of Manhattan Island. I used to think the entire borough of Manhattan consisted of skyscrapers but I 've learned that there's more to Manhattan than skyscrapers. From what I've seen this part of Manhattan resembles the Bronx.
Thank you for doing this walking tour of East Harlem. I grew up on 115th street and haven't been there for many, many years. My family lived throughout East Harlem from the 1910-2015. Wr moved from there in the 1960's. Many parts of Harlem that I remember are no longer there but at least I have good memories of living there.
Thanks for this nice walk. Whenever i hear the name, East Harlem, i think of Ben E King's famous song, " There is a Rose in Spanish Harlem". Also called El Barrio ( the neighborhood), it is a venue for Keith Haring's famous " Crack is Whack" painting within the park of his name at 122nd St/2nd Ave. Back in the '30's, 40's and 50's,and beyond , Stickball games were played along it's streets. There's actually a Stickball Hall of Fame Museum within the Museum of the City of New York. Two famous food venues are Rao's Restaurant on Pleasant Ave and 114th St and one of America's original coal oven pizza restaurants, Patsy's at 116th and 1st Ave. Famous, La Marqueta ( the market) is located between 111th st and 116th St and Park Ave .. Lots' of history and drama coming from East Harlem. Keep up the great work, Actionkid.
You walked pass 110 St and Tito Puente Way with no mention to Tito Puente. He was a legend American musician, songwriter and record producer, a Puerto Rican brother from Spanish Harlem with a music career that spanned over 50 yrs. He is one of the greats in Latin jazz. His most famous composition was "Oye Como Va", later popularized by Carlos Santana.
I stopped to to watch this because was born and raised in East Harlem and miss it so much. Come every summer but pandemic made me skip my first summer. This really made me feel connected again. One thing, glad the narrator experienced how harmless East Harlem really is...can try afternoon hours too. :)
Glad to see you’ve done a walk through of the area where I was born and raised on 116th st and 1st Avenue.. and you’ve walked past my junior high. Man you’ve brought back memories when you’ve mentioned it. Thanks man. I really appreciate it and see that’s it’s still around. I’m still friends with my old class mates today and I’m 43 yrs old. Wow I can’t believe it’s still there
Wow nothing is the same anymore, I remember when Spanish Harlem use to be predominantly Puerto Ricans myself back in the 80's & 90's....someone posted it's mostly Mexicans & central americans now.
Wagner Community gardens is a good way to let folks have a better sense of ownership and pride , which helps for a better community, ! Growing and tending a garden allows residents to see the end result of their work ! 😋
23:14 Wow i can't believe that laundromat on 115 St & 1st is still there. I used to go there to do my laundry. Used to live on 116 bet 1st and Pleasant Ave in the 60s & 70s.
59:52 Back in the 50s when buses used to have a rear bumper and Lexington used to be a two-way kids would stand on the bumper and hung on to the bus' rain gutter to catch a free ride. As a teenager I tried this on a bus going north and when that bus reached the bottom and bounced I almost fell off. After that, NEVER AGAIN. I grew up in EL BARRIO, thanks for the memories.
56:20....I think that building USED to be St.Cecilias school(I'm going back about 75 years)....church was in the block right next door....used to have family on E.105 St. (Paternal grandparents....my dad...and 4 uncles)
When you walked through Robert Wagner projects the first building on the left was the building I grew up in! 2369 first ave(born in 1960 left in 1976)my family was among the first tenants in 1955...went to John s Roberts and the old ps 80 which you didn’t see since it was hidden behind that big new ugly brown box of a building across the street! Thank you soooo much for the memories. I walked down those same streets ...the East 90s and 80s are the area called Yorkville I attended Park east Hs which was or still is 103rd street...walked the streets played on those streets.. got chased and bullied down those streets but hey childhood is childhood😂 Thanks again my friend❤️
I was happy when u made it to 101st and Lexington. Great memories makes me think of the summer block parties, basketball tournaments, people sitting out on front of their buildings, playing dominoes, stickball. 😢😢😢
YES, arrived in New York yesterday !!! Tomorrow watching the German - American Steuben parade on 5th Ave !! I'm looking forward. Ruud Mulder (NYC fan) The Netherlands
Your State-Of-The-Art Video Gear makes East Harlem in a near Autumn Sunny Morning Season look beautiful and Scenic!....Unlike the area I was born and lived in from 1959 to 1975....it's so crispy clear visually and audiobly that you swear you were actually there walking yourself... Keep up your great work, vision and mission!!!
The video is nice, but East Harlem also has Black residents too. The boundaries for Italian Harlem stretched from Lexington Avenue to Pleasant Ave. Also their population didn't end at 116th Street. Maybe the narrator could do a little more research on the area. One more thing, if NYCHA gets "criticism" maybe it's warrented. Ask some of people who reside there, or watch the news reports.
Coming up 1st Avenue from 96th to 120th street and the opposite coming back down on 2nd Avenue it's like Day and Night, a take of two New York City Views just a block apart!
Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. So many of the bldgs you passed I've frequent. The best was the walk down Lexington. Was surprised to see the deli on the corner of 112th St, Lots of sandwiches bought there for field trip. The church at the corner of 111th St was the famous church taken over by the Young Lords in 1969 or 70. These were my old neighborhood. That bldg on 109th with the windows boarded up was once and friend's place. Again thanks. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
PS Don't be fooled by what you hear that Spanish Harlem is a lousy place to live. I lived there for 42 years and it was a wonderful place to live with my family. 🙏
I was born in East Harlem. @ 58:55 (where you had to replace your battery) I missed the fragrance place on the corner of 104 St Lex Ave. At the time of this writing I STILL have oils from that store! @59:40 that check cashing place has been there FOREVER!!! @59:48 Bendicion Tio!!! I’m 56 yrs old and I still say bendicion tio. Thank you for taking me down memory lane.
59:20.....you can blame the former Interboro Rapid Transit Co. for that hill....ride the Lexington IRT in that area..... you'll see that just south of 103rd St....the express tracks curl under the local tracks.....all the way down to just south of 51St Street
On the Lexington hill I once saw a guy walking with a huge turtle under his arm. I asked him what he was doing. Walking my turtle, what's it look like? Lolol God I miss living there!!!!
Nice video very informative you have great knowledge of N.Y.C.I'm learning so much, I also spotted 3 gas stations quite close together that's rare in Manhattan. I new there was problems here but you have added a lot more info thank you Kenneth your knowledge is Priceless take care man👍☕☕🗽🗽🙂👍
Hey AK, nice video. You passed my favorite car wash at 17:09 located at 109th and 1st Ave. Totally stupid to keep a car in Manhattan but what can I say, "stupid is as stupid does." I pay $450 a month just to garage the car and I may use it once or twice a month but again, what are ya gonna do? Lol. Cheers.
Aww I used to live on E 119 st I wish you would of turned on there my dad owned the auto body shop across from the 3 story house we lived in which is a dentist office now I believe
man i was just in manhattan and took my mom to the Botanical Garden and had to subway to 125th and Lexington to catch another subway..i've never been so intimidated by all the people on their hustle, of the poverty and homelessness mental illness desperation in that one block...was like skid row .
Congratulations from Spain for your new video. Autum and winter is coming, I like very much your videos when you are recording under the rain (rainny day) and under the thunderstorm (massive thunderstorm), could you record a video under a great rain or under a magnificent thunderstorm in Times Square or in other population street or avenue? And I like when you are recording under the night with all artificial lights. The best for me will be a video at night under great thunderstorm. And last I have a curiosity, Which is your personal opinion about MrKong NYC and tomasz Bykowski RU-vid channels?
Thank you 😊 I would make some more thunderstorm videos, but it’s all dependent on the weather conditions, where I am at the time, and my ability to record it. We’re not forecasted to have rain in the next week. MrKong NYC and Tomasz Bykowski have great channels too that also show NYC. I don’t particularly enjoy Tomasz’s style of skipping around different NYC neighborhoods from one clip to the next in the same video though.
49:30 I'm about to move to 112th street so I was looking forward to what cool history facts might be around my new apartment, but you just said to watch out for stepping in dog poo poo LOL! 🤣
I lived in the corner of 97 and Lexington, unfortunately you did not paned to the right to see if the building still exist. But thank you very much for those memories!!! Frank
Fantastic job through the New York public housing authority it's wonderful it's better than Chicago high-rise projects anymore torn down in Chicago I would like to see you do White Plains New York
