Google Maps Route: goo.gl/maps/8k...
I walk through the neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens. This section is known to be a major shopping district, and comparable to Brooklyn's Fulton Street. It is also a major transit hub, with connections to numerous buses, NYC Subway Lines on the E, F, J, and Z trains, Airtrain to JFK Airport, and the Long Island Railroad.
From Wikipedia:
"Jamaica is a middle-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is mainly composed of a large commercial and retail area, though part of the neighborhood is also residential. Jamaica is bordered by Hollis to the east; St. Albans, Springfield Gardens, Rochdale Village to the southeast; and South Jamaica to the south; Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park to the west; Briarwood to the northwest; and Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Hills, and Jamaica Estates to the north.
Jamaica was settled under Dutch rule in 1656 in New Netherland as Rustdorp. Under British rule, Jamaica became the center of the "Town of Jamaica". Jamaica was the first county seat of Queens County, holding that title from 1683 to 1788, and was also the first incorporated village on Long Island. When Queens was incorporated into the City of Greater New York in 1898, both the Town of Jamaica and the Village of Jamaica were dissolved, but the neighborhood of Jamaica regained its role as county seat. Today, some locals group Jamaica's surrounding neighborhoods into an unofficial Greater Jamaica, roughly corresponding to the former Town of Jamaica."

Action Kid thank you for setting the record straight regarding the origin of the geographical name, Jamaica. Many people - even many New Yorkers and Queens residents - mistakenly believe that it came from the Caribbean population living there. Thank you for straightening that out

For those who are from Queens. You can see that Jamaica Avenue is being gentrified. The new high rise buildings on Archer, the new Burlington and H&M there. Jamaica center or to us natives "THE AVE " is no longer the mom and pop, hustle man, let's make a deal shopping area as it was in the days of old. They're making it to look like Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Five more years it will look like Willimsburg. I'm just saying.

The single family homes on Jamaica Av. & 179 St are over 100 yrs old. It was predominately Guyanese community. You can tell by the ornamental iron work fences. Further up 179 St around 88 Ave & across Hillside Ave (Jamaica Estates Was yuppie Ville. If you ever get a chance stop into the Queens historical society. You might run into some old timers who would love to relieve the history of the various parts of Queens with you.

When I was there I hated it more and more every day. So happy to have been able to move to beautiful San Diego, CA in 1989. I will never go back to those days. I do like to see your videos though, to see how lucky I am to have escaped that life.

@@Me-qh6pk I liked some parts of NYC, I just hated riding on the subways. Never said everything is trash. As far as CA. I live in San Diego and I feel a lot better living here than I ever did when I was in NYC. I grew up there and worked there for years. I moved to Queens from Manhattan because it was more affordable, but the area so Jamaica I lived in was a drug infested mess with creepy people and criminals. Now I live in a nice upscale area of San Diego where the weather and people are nice with little to no crime and I don't feel like I have to stay in my home to be safe every day. So don't tell me that it's the same, because I know it is not.

South Jamaica Queens native here, now living NC. LOL, I left in 2001 and now I want to go back to look around. There were not that many Caribean when I was brought up there. Now all the African Americans moved further out on the Island.

Jamaica High School had a mascot it was a beaver. So Yamico seems fitting for the beaver mascot of Jamaica High School. The school grounds of the high school formerly known as Jamaica High School has history. Should be put on Historical Preservation Site list.

I grew up in Queens in the 50's - 70's and Jamaica was a great shopping area with Macy's and many great old shops, especially Christmas shopping in the snow, what great atmosphere. Now it's a fucking Third World Jungle like the rest of Queens and Brooklyn, glad I got out years ago.

Actually, the area Sutphin and Jamaica Ave is 80% Latinos. Most of the Jamaican peoples live in Rosedale and Lauralton. Other Jamaican peoples live in Brooklyn and the Bronx White plains rd. Gun Hill rd. areas.

@Joey Esquivel Yeah completely agree. Often when i'm on a city trip ill just take a random bus or metro and get off at the end of the line, walk around and have a drink or bite. Thats when you have the most authentic experiences because there wont be a tourist in sight and you get a true feeling of what its like to live there.
