On December 14, 1959, an F-104C set an altitude record (31.5 km). The Starfighter was the first aircraft to simultaneously hold world records for speed, altitude and rate of climb. The howl has nothing to do with the afterburner. The howl is created in the intake ducts, as if it were an organ pipe when the engine is under loaded. It is very loud when standing a few meters from the airkraft. I have been servicing on this plane for four years :-)

@@andy530i Exactly :), the -7 (and -11 if I'm not mistaken) makes the howl, due to the configuration/design of the petals in the exhaust nozzle. Later versions of the J79 did not howl like these...
@steene.h.christensen5467
@steene.h.christensen5467 2 года назад
@@andy530i Thanks for the good info. So it is neither the intake nor the afterburner that makes the howl, but the exhaust nozzle with shorter blades that the GE J79 engine in an F104 is equipped with. The small flame at the bottom of the afterburner you can see at 18.35 is the pilot burner, which ignites the extra fuel that was injected when activating the afterburner. Then we got that mystery solved :-)

I had the very scary "pleasure " of back in 1975 in Germany By Hanau at the FliegerHorst Kassern leaving the airfield on one of my first solo flights in a Cessna 150 out to my training area. Cruising at 3000 feet , I was split by maybe 50 feet above and 50 feet below by 2 Germain F-104's at 90 degrees to my flight path. Scary as that was...I loved it. I love the F-104. I built a model on my bedroom shelf that made noise when you pressed a button , rotating a toothed gear on a thin flap of metal. I put a D-cell model rocket engine in it and launched it at a local school. There not much left after hitting the ground. It did go really fast, straight up. Straight down too. No chutes !

The spike on the leading edge of the intake inlets is to slow down the boundary layer of air entering the inlet to the J-79 Turbo jet. The same engine the F-4 phantoms used. the F-4 has a movable slat on both sides with holes in them to slow down boundary layer of air. Many use to think the howl is from the intake. But is is actually from the exhaust nozzle.
@Surestick88
@Surestick88 3 года назад
Not the boundary layer. It's there to create a shockwave so the airflow into the engine isn't supersonic.

Kelly Johnson esigning more than 40 wartime and Cold War-era aircraft, including the path-breaking F-104 Starfighter, U-2 Reconnaissance, SR-71 Blackbird, and F-117 Stealth Fighter. So take a pick, haha...
@InquisitiveSearcher

Being a child in the 60s I had a fascination with airplanes, the B-58 Hustler was my favorite over all and the F-101 Voodoo was my favorite fighter. Unfortunately the F-104 Starfighter was among my least favorite aircraft. It's design was a big tube with little stubby wings that seemed wholly inadequate for the job. Over the years my favorite fighter design remains the F-16, it's not the most powerful and it's definitely not the newest but I see it as the best designed and most versatile fighter ever.
@fransmargadant
@fransmargadant 9 месяцев назад
That is an impressive list of aircraft. We will see less and less of the F-16, unfortunately. The F-16 is increasingly being replaced by the F-35, some find it ugly when it is on the ground, but beautiful when it flies. No idea whether the F-35 is the best choice to replace the F-35. The howl of the F-104 always gives me goosebumps and the F-16 still gives great airshows due to its maneuverability. I have never seen the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo, but I have seen the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and it sounds like an old-fashioned vacuum cleaner. The Raptor is a favorite, as are the F-15 and the Saab Gripen. What else do you like?
@InquisitiveSearcher
@InquisitiveSearcher 9 месяцев назад
@@fransmargadant Wow, what else do I like? That's a big question. I like the F4 Corsair, the P51, the Mosquito, the P38, the B1 which has elegance to its impressive function, where as the B52 seems to be a giant boxcar with wings. I was impresses by the ability of the F4 Phantom, though to me it looked like a real life example of the saying about how you can make a brick fly with enough engine. And speaking of making a brick fly, you should look up the one wing landing an Israeli pilot did with an F15, just incredible! The F15 is another example of mussel with only a bit of elegance whereas the F22 is an incredible mix of mussel, elegance and lethality, just incredible. I haven't made up my mind on the F35 yet but I'm leaning towards liking it. I sorta kinda liked the original F18 but the Super Hornet seems a bit oversized though very capable aircraft. I took a picture of the Blue Angels flying the Super Hornet in a diamond formation where they are coming out of a downward turn setting up for a low pass where the angle of the shot makes it seem that you're going to get sucked into their intakes. And that's just those that come immediately to mind. 😉
