Marianna, the point of a Crocodile is she was always a killer. Her fake tears of compassion was the mask she wore everyday of her life. Above her desk at home was a picture of the man she ran over at the beginning as if this was a trophy of a serial killer. When she looks at herself in the car mirror we see the real person behind the mask which is pure evil. This episode gave me chills.

I had to laugh when you said everyone's list is different and then started with Crocodile which is in my Top 3 Black Mirror episodes!

Fifteen Million Merits was the episode that got me hooked on Black Mirror is the first place. That one will always be my favorite.

A pretty good assessment, but your ranking of "The Entire History of You" is criminal. The episode that I had to watch a few times to truly realize how good it was is White Bear. That ending absolutely rocked me and the depiction of our society as being full of questionable vengefulness was so spot on.

Only at number 17?? My favourite's "The Entire History Of You"! To me, it talks about how the truth shall set you free (but often at a cost)! This quote says it all: "You know when you suspect something, it's always better when it turns out to be true. It's like I've had a bad tooth for years and I'm just finally getting my tongue in there and I'm digging out all the rotten shit."

'Metalhead' is my favorite episode so far.

Thank you for doing this video. I was curious what you thought of Black Mirror and all of its episodes, and even when I did not totally agree with your picks, I thought you did a great job discussing the strengths and flaws of each episode. My top five episodes are: 1) San Junipero 2) Shut Up and Dance 3) Fifteen Million Merits 4) White Christmas (has ruined a classic Christmas song for life) 5) Nosedive (I love, love, love that ending, too) The only episodes I did not like are Smithereens, which felt like a preachy psa and Men Against Fire, which had such potential but failed to resonate, and yes, the lead was not good. Also, thank you for defending Metalhead. I honestly thought it was a nailbiting episode.

This was a great video Marianna! I still haven't watched the last two episodes but my top 5 would probably be: 1 - San Junipero 2 - Nosedive 3 - White Christmas 4 - Shut Up and Dance 5 - Probs a tie between Arkangel and USS Callister!

My #1 has to be San Junipero - the way it tackles grief, loss, and love is so invigorating. I like it offers you space to reflect if the way it concludes is what you would want for yourself or not as well. I cry every time, and the acting is some of the best in the entire series. My #2 would be the space ship one, but after that, nothing else really compares for me. Many of the episodes I still remember vividly, but this is not a very rewatchable series, at least for me.

YES! Be Right Back is also my favorite episode, and I almost never see others rank it as their #1, or even top 3. As someone who has lost someone very close to them, I think this episode nailed the feeling of intense grief and the desperation one feels, even just to hear their loved one's voice again.

Totally with you on "Metal Head". Like the original Twilight Zone - not EVERY episode had to have a message; sometimes you just want a banger story!

OMG! Our top 2 are the same! Gosh, I also cried at the end of Be Right Back, because oh wow...that was incredibly emotional (the most emotional of them all, in a none-creepy way) and I know if this technology actually exists, it might be incredibly difficult for me to fight the temptation to use it as well 😭😭

Bandersnatch was fun. My friends and I made an event of it, like it was the Superbowl, or something. Food, drinks, etc. We kept track of each of our choices, and tried to achieve every possible ending, lol!

USS Callister is my favourite for sure. It made me smile that you enjoyed it despite not being a huge Trek fan - I for one am a HUGE Trekkie and I love that they paid homage to it not through reference after reference (ala Lower Decks, which is a show I love but is completely unwatchable without prior knowledge of Star Trek) but rather through set and costume design, which is instantly recognisable and just looks stunning, and through the action which really felt like something from Trek only less PG lol. It's funny, it's disturbing, it's action packed, I adore the ending. Perfect

You weren't kidding when you said that your ranking was different than mine! Wow, this was a roller coaster: half the time I was nodding in complete agreement, and the other half I was in utter shock at what you said :) It's like a condensed experience of me watching your videos for the past six years (my god, has it really been that long?). You can be a real heartbreaker sometimes, Marianna :) I'm going to select a few episodes to give my two cents, and I'll focus mostly on eps where we disagree. As a general rule, my favourite episodes are those where the underlying message is subtle or there is no clear right/wrong answer. In short, the episodes that don't treat their audience like idiots and inspire further debate. - I really liked Crocodile, I thought it was a great story about a woman who was basically a dormant psychopath and then just snapped. Loved the investigation as well. My one complaint is that they took it too far in the end. - I'm very surprised about your opinion about White Bear. It's generally regarded as one of the strongest eps. What didn't you like about the ending? IMO it's brilliant. It's a very dystopian version of mob justice and punishment as a form of entertainment, cleverly shown from the point of view of the criminal. Much more interesting than Shut Up And Dance, which relies solely on a shock twist. - I'm also surprised about The Entire History of You. Yes, the characters aren't sympathetic, but that makes it interesting. The protagonist is an obsessive control freak and a jerk, but he was also right to suspect his wife. Which leads to uncomfortable questions: Was he in the right? If you suspect your partner is cheating on you, how far would you go to find out? This was the first episode that introduced a new piece of technology that at first glance sounds appealing (you'll never forget anything), but which would have horrible consequences (privacy doesn't exist anymore). - Why do you hate the ending of Hang The DJ? I loved it. It seems that sometimes you wanted a story to go in a certain direction, but then a twist happens that you don't like. Which is a totally understandable reaction, I've had that experience countless times in shows and movies. - I'm glad you liked Metalhead. And IMO it works precisely because there is almost no context. The fact that we don't understand what's going on is what makes this story so unsettling. You can just feel the tension and paranoia. And I like that we can fill in the blanks ourselves and make up our own version of what occurred before (and after). Contrast this with Men Against Fire, an episode I really disliked. Boy do they whack you over the head with their message. "Yes thank you, I get what you're going for, you don't have to spell it out!" Fifteen Million Merits is another dystopian story with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. - I'm not surprised at all that Nosedive is one of your favourites. For me, it didn't do much, because I deliberately limit my social media activity - and I still think I'm wasting too much time online. My main problem was that the main character really annoyed me - come to think of it, I've never like Bryce Dallas Howard in anything. But I totally get that this story was close to your heart. - And again, you really surprised me with your #1 pick. Be Right Back? Wauw, I would never have guessed that. I have to confess that I couldn't connect with this story (please don't hate me). For starters, I wasn't able to suspend my disbelief. If technology was so advanced that you could replicate a person so well, I could think of a million other applications, all of them sinister and with a load of ethical problems. And I found it hard to believe that someone could replace a loved one with an artificial copy. It would be a constant reminder that the real person doesn't exist anymore. Anyway, I wish I had such a strong reaction as you did. As you say, everyone connects with different stories, and that makes Black Mirror such a unique series. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Marianna. And stay safe out there, I feel like we're living in a Black Mirror episode right now!

Also a great ranking show would be the films of Powell & Presburger if you've never seen them you will love them. Lastly did you know National Anthem is a (very) exaggerated reference to the rumored initiation ceremony of a university club that two out o the last three British PMs belonged to.

This was Marianna's Sci-Fi sermon. Well I started watching this.... then realized I'd better watch Black Mirror. I too had been putting it off. And I think we agree at many points. Some episodes like National Anthem I dropped fairly low, because it seemed to conceptual to me. But I too was fascinated by Metalhead, which I felt was ruthlessly efficient. Even the bug/doglike design of the 'dogs' was chilling. Apart from San Junipero, which I wasn't very attached to, I loved most of your top ten. And i certainly agree Be Right Back had the most emotional theme. I'm glad You prodded me to finally watch this series. (Alas I downloaded Bandersnatch which is five hours long and I don't think it's has choices. So I'm not watching that yet. And I'm not joining Netflix just for that. But I'll eventually get the Blu-rays.) Oh and I totally agree about Hang the DJ. I was totally with it until the wall disappears.

I love that Bandersnatch was in your top 5. I would have to say Nosedive is my favorite. Bryce Dallas Howard was a powerhouse in that one - her dad's talent has certainly rubbed off on her.

Also, I'll give an honorable mention to White Christmas for introducing the frightening idea of a cookie and its implications in the whole series. Also, I feel the need to defend my liking of "the Miley Cyrus episode" haha I think the thing by now that I can expect from Black Mirror is that it'll try to tackle as many different genres as possible. We've got a crime thriller (Crocodile), a detective thriller (Hated in the Nation), horror (Playtest), a hostage situation from the POV of the negotiators (The National Anthem), a hostage situation from the POV of the hostage taker (Smithereens), space sci-fi (USS Callister), etc... Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too is the wholesome family movie/musical comedy of the Black Mirror series and I guess I'm a sucker for that genre haha You've got the little sister who's an unapologetic fan of Ashley O and is even seen headbanging at the concert trying to enjoy Ashley O's new punk phase. You've got the older sister who did not like Ashley O at first but at the end they're band mates and you've got the goofy dad who's trying to sell his humane rat traps at any opportunity. I mean, I thought the dad's technology was going to combine Ashley O's consciousness with a rat but that's what Black Mirror wanted us to think and they didn't go that route and that's one of the strengths of the episode.

Favorite Foreign Horror movies of the last decade or beyond.

Have you seen Fast Color? Might be something you'd like, and it stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw who also played Kelly in San Junipero. You can watch on Hulu and Amazon Prime. My top five are probably White Christmas, Black Museum, Metalhead, San Junipero and Nosedive. And White Bear. That's six, I know, but I had to mention White Bear too.

I think my three favorite episodes are (no order): Fifteen Million Merits (got me inside, related so much to Bing and the final twist punched me in the guts) Hated in the Nation Nosedive It seems this serie tackles so many broad yet personnal stuff, our favorites ends up often being what hits closest to our own hearts. No surprises ranking lists are so differents from one person to another.

My personal favourite is actually Rachel, Jack, and Ashley too. Underrated episode in my opinion

If you like Black Mirror, I would recommend Love Death Robots. Not as good and deep as Black mirror, but still a fun anthology scifi series

Creator/writer Charlie Brooker has had an interesting and varied career. The idea for The National Anthem was first mentioned 15/20 years ago in an article Brooker wrote when he was still TV critic for The Guardian. That was before he moved into TV work himself. I'd guess that a lot of Brits still think of him as predominately a satirist. His recent Antiviral Wipe (a Daily Show type take on the pandemic) was excellent, if perhaps a touch parochial for international viewers. Prior to Black Mirror he also wrote Dead Set, a zombie mini-series for British TV which might be of interest to a fan of horror.

Maybe it's my San Junipero bias, but it felt to me like the show was trying to recapture that magic but couldn't get the balance of tones and themes right

Be Right Back is superb and it must have had an influence on Ian McEwan's Machine Like Me, the images from that episode were in my head when I was reading that book. Bandersnatch is an absolute dream of an episode but its San Junipero that gets your heart.

Best Episode: Nosedive. Brilliance in everything. And the ending (Cell-Scene) always let me laugh hard 😆 "...Your face is a fuckin' biological car crash that'd make Picasso screw his eyes up and say 'Well that just don't make sense'..." 😉 14:32 "The Future is now and we're all screwed!" Indeed 😉

I haven't ranked them all yet, and probably never will, but I think my favorite is Black Museum, and my second favorite is Playtest. I honestly didn't think Playtest was going to be topped. Some of my other favorites are White Christmas, 15 million merits, white bear, and metalhead was good. Interesting to see your rankings.

I love how the series affects all us different. Striking Vipers really got into my head and challenged some of my perceptions. Though it's not my favorite. My favorites are in no particular order, entire history of you, nosedive, 15mil merits, and san junipero.

I feel that hang the dj was one of those cookie episodes and it was an adequate ending imo. it also made it very sad that those cookies only live for relationship reason and I felt bad af for them lmao

White Christmas is the episode that has stuck with me the most. Not the only prison of the mind type episode, but I think it was the best one. I agree about Metalhead, It's underrated! I understand why it wasn't for everyone though.

Hard to give a favorite because for me all Black Mirror is a Masterpiece ! (Brooker is really a genius). But "Hang the dj", "White bear," "Rachel, Jack et Ashley Too", "White Christmas" and especially "Playtest" and " San Junipero" marked me greatly.
