Fourth in a series of movies/television episodes that are similar in content and style to "One Step Beyond". This is "Grey Reminder", an April 30 1951 episode of the series "Lights Out". Extra added bonus "equivalency": the episode stars John Newland . . .

Excellent point. These broadcasts from early 1950s . . . have the same feel as daytime soap operas. Partly it's because they are both "live" and partly because they both use highlighting music . . .

John Newland was so talented, and in so many ways too, in addition to being such a wonderful and decent fellow! Oh I do wish they came this way now in the Entertainment world.

This is more evocative of early (1951) television . . . than I think it is generally given credit for. It has a simple, matter-of-factness about it (not yet disproportionately stylized) . . . that I really like.

My first thought was that Elsie had written all these letters before her death, leaving them with a lawyer or someone, to be delivered according to her instructions. (Plus ringing the doorbell on their anniversary.) They started after he married again (?) to torment him & break up his marriage/happiness one way or another!

BTW: Tough call for the writer . . . to make it a modern ringing with a doorbell or an old school knocking at the door. Maybe I should try editing the video and putting in knocking, to see how it works: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r1pJzw6Q-98.html

I feel the mother in law wrote the letters..she had a weird look to her eyes....the poor maid got the nutty wife's strife, although she may have been in love with John, who knows...and Ed the driver, we never saw him....the mother in law opened the desk and removed something ...nosy lady......at the end the doorbell rings endlessly and lo and behold no one is there so that means the deceased wife is not taking John...poor ending,.,,,,

The feminine aspect of the Male psyche is called the Anima. C.G.Jung's in depth research on this topic is not at all understood in our present age. He has stated that the anima " is something that a man never gets the better of and never finishes coping with ". My own experience with this creature of the night leads me to the same conclusion.

It wasn't filmed. This is a kinescope of a live television broadcast . . .
@jsat5609
@jsat5609 4 года назад
@@one-step-beyond-1959 A kinescope was a film made off a tv picture tube. It was the only way to record a live tv show in the early 1950s, and since at that time, union rules forbade reuse of kinescopes after 60 days, often no special care was taken to preserve them.
@jsat5609
@jsat5609 4 года назад
@@kpasa111 They did for movies filmed directly with 35 mm motion picture cameras, but kinescopes were necessarily limited by the resolution of the television monitor and they were often not properly preserved. In fact sometimes they were considered a nuisance and intentionally destroyed. Out of 10 years of live programming (c. 1945-1955) only about 300 individual episodes broadcast on the defunct Dumont television network survive today. See my above comment. In addition, your computer monitor or flat screen HDTV is not optimized to display 1950s NTSC analog tv. It would have looked better on a 1951 television set.
