If there's one episode from the entire series, it's this one ☝️. I watched it when I was a schoolboy over 50 years ago. Although I never saw it again, it stuck in my mind, I have briefly recounted it to a number of people over the years and to see it again after all this time is a real memory jerker.

Dear Edmond, I do indeed know from whence you speak. I have a son who was in the Navy like his father before him. Neither were in for long, each being drawn out by unfortunate starcrossed circumstances. Even my son's half brother who also signed up for the Navy was in only for a while when he had to be sent for to return. It does seem strange that all three of these very capable and most daring men who sought to engage themselves in a redeeming set of tasks for the sake of God and Country and Honor, would almost as one be plucked from the ocean to live lives of personal tragedy so bitter that the very stars cried in contempt for what they've endured. And while I can only speak for my son as far as his Welsh, Irish and Scottish heritage, his father and half brother, too, have English roots if one looks to their ancestors. Both sons are 14th generation on this continent in a direct line from William Brewster and "The Mayflower" on their father's side. And that side is replete with tales of hauntings, ghosts, and harbingers. As for my side, I sensed the death of their half sister, their father's firstborn and favored an entire day before she died, but couldn't place the identity, only that it was a female of the Jones line, and that she'd passed after midnight on a certain day. My foreboding was borne out and another tragedy was added to the tally for their family. Even the daughter had the gift, as she'd sensed her grandad's passing as it was happening. But I've had the gift since I was very little, and some of the things I've sensed and seen would wither the heartiest of sailors. I wonder now if my own grandchildren will ever experience anything like this. Do take care, Edmond, as I wish you well in all your future endeavours. Be at peace for now, for soon will come the time when the sea shall give up her dead, and we'll all be together again. The skies are darkening, and time grows short. Soon. Pax et Bonum. ---Mary C Wallace 💖🙏🏻💐

Of course I do not remember the stories,but oddly the tune that plays during the paranormal moments brings back memories of fear that I had long since forgotten. That _Inner Sense_ so often called *Paranormal,* is far too often ignored by many who would benefit from listening to that _Voice from within._ I could go on with anecdotes of my wife and self, where that _voice_ has kept us from harm. As well as caused us to benefit from heeding that _inner, unexplainable gut feeling._

Great stuff. The Hood was one of many WWI era defective battle cruisers the British had. Many were sunk in the 1st war at the battle of Jutland, all because of the same issue...no armor plate above the magazine. Although they knew about it, the war soon ended and no one wanted to spend money fixing it.

In my childhood I witnessed my grandmother on three occasions while staying with her interpreting dreams she had had and predicting a family death which within hours became reality. As a child it terrified me. The last time I remember her doing it was predicting my grandfather’s death - she had dreamt just before Christmas 1983 that she was standing inside the front door of her house with her 6 children (although they were then adults and living in different parts of the world). She explained she was begging my grandfather not to leave but he said he really had to go and then closed the door. Although we tried to convince her it was only a dream she remained convinced that he was leaving her. At 9pm on New Year’s Eve he dropped dead on the kitchen floor of a massive heart attack. There certainly seem to be some people who genuinely have premonitions.

I remember having a premonition about my father last I saw him before he died in 1999 - I was so terrified I never told anyone immediately after the incident - not my own family, not anyone. Worst part is, he died while out of state on a business trip. I think one of the reasons "One Step Beyond" has been so enduring over the years is that while its episodes are based on real-life incidents, a lot of people can relate to at least one if not more of the stories.

These old shows were significantly more "static" that anything we have today: stories were often developed in a single room (or a office or a small outdoor location) with a single camera but the quality of the plot AND the acting abilities of the actors were definitely enough to entertain the watcher with great episodes. The quality of acting was also very good: long scenes with good actors and clear diction (and for a non native speaker like me this is an extra treat) made the show truly enjoyable. And of course the plot: great writers back in the days! Old but gold.

John Newland was a talented versatile Song&Dance Actor from the Vaudeville Stage to the Dramatic Hollywood Screen. Ultimately, he was a stellar Director (a.k.a "Conductor", as he most humbly called himself, crediting the Actors, rather than his own tremendous talents as a "Director"). And... in this episode, it certainly "sounds" like Newland was The Voice of the Brit Radio Broadcaster!! Rest In Peace, Sir!

In 1941, during WWII, Helen Duncan held a séance; she claimed the spirit of a sailor told her a British war ship had been sunk. A German U-boat had sunk the HMS Barham, but the news had not yet reached the public. For her prediction Duncan was jailed for 9 months under the British Witchcraft Act of 1735 .

When you consider that during the war 40 British warships were sunk by a u boats it really wasn't that surprising that she foretold the sinking of a British ship, Now had she given the name of the ship that was sunk that would have been a different matter
@RicTic66
@RicTic66 4 года назад
Also she claimed that the Sailor had HMS Barnham on his 'tally band' the ribbon around his hat. This would not have been possible as during war time Royal Navy sailors only wore the letters HMS on their hats and no ships name, so as to make it difficult for any spies to identify which ships were where. Helen Duncan like all clairvoyants was a money spinning fraud.

My first November 11th when working in England I was having lunch at a motorway mall when at 11:11am all activities stopped for 1 minute…and this was in 1999 and it marked the timing of the 1918 Armistice….it carried THAT MUCH significance.

Remember for a short time they changed the date to the 4th Monday in October to mKe it a 3-day weekend? They eventually changed it back when they changed the day to Veterans DY instead of a commemoration of the Armistice, it lost its true meaning. Sad. Veterans deserve their day, but so does Armistice Day. Memorial Day is another example of a sad change of meaning. Instead of remembering the fallen, it’s an opportunity for stores to rake in some cash with big sales, go to the beach, and have barbecues. How many people realize what we’re even supposed to be memorializing, or give a thought to the brave men and women who have died to secure the freedoms they enjoy?

As tomorrow is November the 11th ( Remembrance Day here in Canada) i would like to share with other viewers my own personal experiences with vets. My Dad was in the dental business and one day a gentleman walked into his office to have a bridge adjusted. I happened to notice he had an English accent and struck up a conversation with him. I found out he was a pilot in the RAF and while on leave he went back to see his wife and kids . Unbeknownst to him on his way back his street had been bombed and as he was walking down the road where his house had been there was a large hole. Even though he remarried the shock and grief of this tragedy was still in his voice even though this happened 40 years before . Strangely enough he found a letter he had written to his wife and kids in their mailbox as he sorted through the wreckage.

Today is November 11th, 2016. I've just returned from the traditional 11:00 am Armistice Day commemoration (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month . . .) outside the local VFW hall in my city. It was a little bit of a temporal reality check for me. I still remember the World War I veterans at the annual parade when I was growing up in the 1960s. None of them left today, of course. But there were also no World War II vets -- which reminded me that the average veteran of that war would himself be 95 years old now. I was especially touched this morning by an elderly veteran in a wheelchair . . . who insisted on trying to stand during the national anthem. Several people helped hold him up. Extreme props to all veterans today . . . in their embodiment of the human spirit.

I attended the Remembrance Day in my locality . As it is not the usual cenotaph I attend I had to ask directions of a lady police officer on my way. She was courteous enough to give me directions. It made me feel good that teachers had brought both elementary and high school kids for the service. It is criminal that in America kids don't what Omaha Beach is or here in Canada don't know what Juno Beach is. Wars are fought by those who have forgotten what freedom is and that it does not come cheap. By the way I walked in to the local coffee shop to buy the young lady officer a coffee and some muffins. When I went to pay for it and because I was in dress clothes with medals and wearing my beret they told me it was on the house. Better treatment then some of our vets have gotten in past decades.

So, John Newland was British? I've long come to see these series from the past as being better than what we have today in our era of tv talk and "infotainment". But I think there is a certain tradition of British gravitas as well as British wit that would have added to the quality.

My dear friend, who is 98 years-old, fled Estonia during WW2. She and her husband and brother planned on boarding a departing ship in Tallinn's harbor. Their last night in Estonia, her brother dreamed that the ship they were on was torpedoed and he was killed. He told her he wasn't going, but she talked him out of his decision, telling him it was just a silly dream. They went to the port, boarded the hospital ship, Moero, and left Estonia on the night of Sep. 21, 1944. Early the next morning, Sep. 22, 1944, Russian planes torpedoed the ship in the Baltic Sea, and it sank in about 7 minutes. My friend's brother and husband were both killed. She was one of less than 500 survivors out of several thousand refugees and wounded soldiers aboard the ship. She still struggles with a sense of guilt and deep sadness. But we believe in the sovereignty of God. Because Erich died, she eventually came to America and married. She had 6 children, and has had an amazing life.

Hello again One-Step-Beyond. Thanks for uploading these wonderful episodes, and I'm back looking at Series 2 in order. You mention in a comment far below about the nature of the physical world, and about the fact that atoms are almost all space but that we still avoid stepping out into the road in front of a bus. I hope you'll allow me to share a story with you and your viewers, one which I think you'll find resonates with this storyline. Some years ago a close relation of mine told me of an experience her best friend had at work, soon after the war. This friend had another (female) friend, and they learned that a fortune-teller was giving readings at a nearby location; the girls thought it would be good fun to visit this woman during their lunch hour, and to find out if they were going to meet a 'tall, dark, handsome stranger' who would sweep them off their feet, etc. All enjoyable girlie fun. One lunchtime the two girls go off to the fortune teller, who was reading palms (just like the old dear in our story). My relation's friend had her palm read first and was indeed told that she would soon meet and fall in love with a tall, dark-haired man. All true, as it turned out. Then the other girl went in for her reading. Very soon afterwards she came out again in extreme anger. When asked what had happened to make her so angry, she reported that she had given the gypsy woman her fee (about a shilling, I seem to remember) and had then sat down and presented her palm to be read. The fortune-teller looked at it closely, and then became very agitated. She then told the girl that she was sorry, but that she was unable to give her a reading. The girl became angry, and stated that she had paid her money, and would the gypsy please honour the contact and provide her with a reading. Again, the gypsy woman refused, and apologised, saying that of course she would refund her sitter's fee to her. This she did, and the girl left the reading room. According to the first girl, her friend was extremely angry at having wasted a good part of her lunch break on a fool's errand. Both girls then left the premises and went out into the pavement. The disappointed girl, still very angry, walked out into the road and went straight under a bus that happened to be passing by at that moment. She was killed instantly. Make of that what you will, but my relative told me this incident affected her friend for many years afterwards.

Robin Hughes, At the age of 18, he joined the Royal Navy as a signalman and at the end of the Second World War, he left the service as lieutenant commander. Robin Hughes addressed in an episode of the 1950s' television programme One Step Beyond that he was supposed to be assigned to HMS Hood on the morning of 24 May 1941, when it sank under enemy attack by the German battleship Bismarck. Robin had received officer's papers, however, the day before Hood set to sea, and was sent to officer's training instead of boarding the ship with his mates. in the tragedy, 1,415 men died; only three survived...or, as Robin Hughes stated, "...four."

As I walked through, far to the side of my path I saw a small fenced in area with two tombstones in it. Thinking it might be someone famous, I walked over to it, then around to the other side to read the tombstone. It had my name on it. My exact first and last name. As a child I recall my Mother pointing out a veteran of the Boer War in a reverent tone of voice, she told my siblings and I how very few of them still lived. Remembrance days there was an increasingly smaller contingent of WWI vets present, and they were looked upon with almost mythic awe. My Step Father saw battle in 7 different theatres of war during WWII as an Intelligence Officer in the Scottish Regiment, and my Father led the first daylight bombing raid on Berlin after having returned from a record number of scrambles as a fighter pilot with the RAF. My Mother worked with an underground resistance cell in occupied France passing on documents, clothing, and money to soldiers in need. Each year fewer of these veterans were living and able to attend the services, but they held a very special place in our hearts. These days there are some Korean War vets, Vietnam, Gulf, Afghanistan, and the many conflicts in the missile east. Many of these later soldiers, who fought as loyally and with all their hearts have been afforded much less honour in my experience. Sadly, many of them are more spiritually broken because they felt they were thrown away, and lied to by the governments they should have been able to trust. When the military war machine is more and more driven by "the Military Industrial Complex" President Eisenhower warned President Kennedy to be wary of, our men and women have taken a back seat to profit and their own fair and just treatment. When the last veteran of a truly legitimate declared war has passed away our world will not only be poorer, but it will have changed in a way that can never be recovered....once trust is lost, it is VERY hard to regain. Props to ALL who continue to tell the truth of these wars so they may never be forgotten, and abuses of those who sacrifice so much, believing it to be an honourable sacrifice, may never be perpetrated on true patriots of ANY nation again. Keep telling their stories so what happened is indelibly marked in the psyches of each generation who was not there, but whose lives were shaped by those who were...for better or for worse. 🇨🇦

Tamarra James What a touching story of your family. You should listen to The Ballad of Bill Hubbard by Roger Waters. He recorded a WWI veteran giving an interview on tv. It's set to music and quite haunting, the story of how he had to leave his friend in No Man's Land. He came upon him gravely injured and the poor soul had to be left behind- actually he was begging to be left. All these stories- each of the 1,500 souls on the ship in this story, they all had their own story too. A sad commentary on humanity: in ALL of recorded history, the longest we've been without a major war somewhere is 25 years, which means war has touched nearly every human that has been. The planet is full of psychic scars passed from one generation to the next. NOW the nightmare of nuclear confrontation is happening. Those of us who grew up in the fifty's and sixty's knew that feeling well. Movies and tv shows reflected the fear of the atomic bomb as it was called. Twilight Zone has an episode that I thought about with the recent scare in Hawaii, people thought for 45 minutes that nuclear warheads were on the way. The plot of The Twilight Zone and the effects on the families and neighbors- one family had a bomb shelter. Perhaps it's time to stock up on masking tape for the windows, storing water and food. Scary. People are asking where the bomb shelters are. In the 1960's Civil Defense we had the basement of a JC Penny's downtown- different people were assigned different places. Yup this world is a mess of our own creation.

Ted Briggs was one of three survivors of the battlecruiser HMS Hood. HMS Hood was 44,600 tons, had a crew of 1,419 and was faster than the Bismarck with a maximum speed of 32 knots. The Hood had been launched in 1918 and was armed with 8 x 15 inch guns, 12 x 5.5 inch guns, 8 x 4 inch AA guns, 24 x 2 pound guns and 4 x 21 inch torpedoes. However, the Hood suffered from one major flaw - she did not have the same amount of armour as the Bismarck. The fact that the Hood was faster than the Bismarck by 3 knots was as a result of her lack of sufficient armour for a naval battle fought in World War Two. What had been considered sufficient armour in 1918 when Hood was built, was to prove a fatal flaw in 1941. Out of 1,419 souls only three survived.
