In this game it's really about learning the uniforms. Although there are quite a few different skins/models. German helmets differ quite a bit, there are also times where the Russians will have trench coats in the snow maps. Head gear, and coats plus the colors are the best things to look at. Usually grey vs browns.
@SideStrafe you, my good sir, made one of the most brilliant arguments i've heard for games these days. I love how you questioned why people want to play an unreal tournament style game with modern day soldiers and weapons. also this game looks amazing and i wish i had the computer to support it.
I'm glad I ran across your video--your comments on the patch moving the game more to the "realism" side has convinced me to get back into it. I'm just hoping that there are enough of us who prefer the more realistic mode of play to have servers available to play.
You won me over. Ever since NovaLogic's Delta Force series, I've been looking for a multiplayer game where you can just lie on your stomach and scan the horizon instead of having frantic shootouts in small spaces. Good job on the footage and the commentary.
i love your commentaries! i just bought RO2 in sale and havn't downloaded yet so decided to come and watch a decent gameplay. I feel the same way about games too. You just got a sub my friend!
I am downloading this game right now!! Cant wait to try it out, also love the realism. Been waiting for something like this for a while. See you online I hope.
Note the difference between the terminology Maximum Range, and Effective Range. Whilst the weapon can technically hit targets way past 500m, it is not effective fire. Usually it can only be used as harassing fire (in a military context) or with a sharpshooter enhancements and a spotter.
dude btw, RO2 has a character too. this game u play is dedicated to the soldiers who fought in this one huge battle, the battle of stalingrad. it wants to not only entertain us, but give us a bit of an impression about this epic struggle of both sides, russian and german.
Tank combat in Men of War is also more accurately done than in even ARMA because vehicles have no HP. If you penetrate, it might damage the hull enough to cause the crew to leave; however, if the projectile penetrates and hits the munition, the tank will blow up. It can be unforgiving but I've had a King Tiger kill 6 IS-3 tanks because I hull down in a great spot.
It's not HP based at all in RO2. At longer ranges penetration becomes less as the velocity of the round is much lower, it's less likely to penetrate, as well as less likely to cause major damage. RO2 tank combat involves a lot of damaging and disabling. Check out Tripwire's forum, they have a thread with literally everything you need to know about RO2 tanks, as well as some info on how they came to that info.
its definitely a worthy purchase, especially at the discount its going for now. 2 new tanks and APCs are on the near horizon, also with a Pacific themed expansion called Rising Storm coming out in the near future. Especially now with Action, Realism, and Classic servers all being readily available, you definitely find a game mode to your liking.
its called client side hit detection, and all modern games have it (this is also a problem in a ton of other games, BF3 comes to mind because it happens a lot there too). it is added to games because it reduces the negative impact of lag for players without good connections in order to make things more fair, as a result, it brings everybody to the same level connection-wise. thats why in cod games, if one person is lagging, everybody feels the effects in one way or another.
I really like the gameplay elements for this game. It forces you to cooperate with your teammates. The fanbase isn't there right now, but I can guarantee that it will expand within the next few weeks.
I dont like hitmarkers, kill cams, or any notification on whether or not you killed someone. Just looking through steam games right now... I loved the first RO, somewhat interested in 2 now. Just needed to get that off my chest.
I like how the game engine doesn't use a supression system, becasue it doesn't NEED one. Like in BF3, your vision goes blurry, but otherwsie you're fine. In RO2, the supression is actually realistic because there is no vision imparement, it's just that you dont want to risk going out there cos 1 shot can kill you.
Wow! RTT, bullet drop or real time ballistics really make this game realistic. Screw the fact that you can run through your teammates like they just aren't there or the fact that you can't shoot through few millimeters thick objects or the fact that you can magically zoom in your view when firing from weapons that have iron sights or when you get shot at a gray indicator is displayed to tell you from which direction it is happening. Yeah, that's very realistic.
31:40 No it is not exaggerated. The Mauser 98 style rifle is an extremely accurate rifle. The round it fires, the 7.92x57mm is extremely stable when it comes to ballistics. That in addition to precise iron sights and a good trigger means great accuracy. The Springfield M1903 (reputation for one of the most accurate rifles ever) payed Mauser royalties during WWI for having their design practically copied. Great gameplay too.
The re is no point in camping in TERRITORY mode, where you should cap the capszones. That's the beauty of this game, you need to find a right balance between stayin' alive and be constantly on the move to your next objective. Love it.
As a Kar98 enthusiast, I can affirm that it's known as a very accurate rifle. As far as game mechanics goes perhaps it is a bit too precise, considering the lack of bullet drop and trajectory variation, but for the sake of making basic infantry units more attractive for players I think it's not such a big issue. Knowing you have a weapon that's so accurate, and knowing that your enemies are equipped with similar, forces you to be patient, slow and deliberate just like in real combat.
You should have informed of the many awesome features the game has. Like the 1st person cover-system with blindfire, going into cover while on a mounted MG to reload, use mouse-scrolling to adjust the range at which your aim is set, cook grenades before you throw, optional manual bolting (which bolts faster!), germans run with weapons in one hand, soviets in both hands (authentic and easier to identify enemy), etc.. Still great video! Hope some of your viewers picked up the game, well worth it!
side strafe heres a quick tip the Kar 98 and Springfield both have 5 rounds in the mag so shoot 5 rounds or if you've shot before but dont remember how much hold R it'll show you if you have any rounds left
This game is fantastic, you don't have an ammo or health indicator, to check you're ammo you actually have to look at the magazine, and when you are wounded you have to actually bandage yourself, though the only thing that bugs me is you can't see you're body when looking down, I know its picky but it would make it more realistic that way and many other things but too much to explain right now. GET IT! its $5-8 dollars on steam summer sale!
Awesome video sidestrafe and i totally agree with you :D I been playing this game since the very beginning even pre orderd it from Steam, and I can tell with the latest patch they really did a great job, and especially with the free weekend tons of people rushed in to try out the game and hopefully alot did enjoy it :D Are we going to see more video's of you playing Red Orchestra 2 or perhaps Iron Front Liberation 1944? ^-^
sorry for the large amount of comments haha, also, the reason why some games appear to have this problem worse than others is due to the amount of data transferred between the clients and the host/server. in CoD for example, in addition to player location data, there are many other things transferred such as killstreak location, etc., in BF3, there is physics information such as building destruction, etc.
SideStrafe - I totally agree with you. I think people play games like COD and Quake because they want the rush of fast paced gameplay, while people who like simulations want the immersion of an actual war. IMO the immersion people are the more artistic ones in life, who will look around and take in their surroundings, while the adrenaline rush ones are the more logical ones who want to be taken on a thrill ride instead of creating their own immersion.
They've said they're hoping to renovate the whole vehicle part of Red Orchestra 2. Especially with Tank warfare. They hope to allow you to scuttle your tank when it's damaged beyond repair. It's a step in the right direction.
Thanks to your videos, I have moved away from Call Of Duty completely! Just bought this game, it's downloading as I type. Thanks and cheers from Norway :)
yes there is. its the only game i know where you see the adjustments on your weapon. Although you will never need it on the current maps, cause the infantry engagements on those ar between 10 -220m.
RO2, espeically the new Rising Storm, is one game I just keep coming back to play. The community has grown from nothing (no player count when it was released), to very healthy (now). It's one of the few games out there that has managed to come back from the dead. I love it, this game kicks so much ass.
a firefight with blanks but okay) because you don't get the stressful feel of being in battle, the bullets will never be bullets in simulation, you're in it voluntarily and you can leave at any time, you aren't stuck there fighting for your life having hundreds of little pieces of metal going fast enough to rip through you fly past your head
I could play for only a few minutes this morning, but I was ecstatic to see 2850 players on line! Still only a handful of Classic servers, but maybe that will change, too, if enough of these new players stick with it and graduate to that mode. Great review, by the way.
I really like your logic and commentary. Today i bought the delux edition like some say is for offer, costing nearly nothing. Played the first ro a lot and loved it, just like the mod Darkest Hour. I really hope they come up with such a mod in the future for ro2. By the way in ro it was possible to play huge tank battles, that required good skill, like angeling you tank turret, which round, distance etc. Hope they will support this also in the future, cause killing a tank was very satisfying
Btw I notice you don't use your map. Press the m key. It's really useful when trying to figure out where you are. Also please make more red orchestra 2 footage I loved it!
There are plenty of Classic Mode servers up as of this moment... yours was an earlier observation. I also feel that you are misinformed on some of the aspects of the game such as tank gameplay and the like but I guess it is from an honest standpoint of what you know and that's perfectly fine. If anyone is interested in the game, check it out this weekend, visit the forums for any questions, praise or concerns. This game is just getting started.
Also, to add more realism, you can make it so you automatically have to reload it yourself after every rifle shot. Its as simple as hitting the fire button again.
if you wanted to know, mausers can pull off most of those shots. granted you a robotically steady hand in freezing cold weather like the rifleman you play in the game. even when i use a 70yr old surplus mauser, with correct ammo, a non pitted barrel, little to no wind, and the stars aligning just right i can hit a man sized target 400m away. i would need sand bags for a range over 200 but some boast even greater ranges with irons, after all the elevation on the rear sights goes up 2000 meters.
Well I can understand how Battlelog wasn't a very population option, but to be honest, it works, and it does cut down on loading times. I think the best benefit is that you can search for other servers while still in a game. That's just me, I like it enough to not miss good ol menu's too much. If you want a menu with campaign you can start Origin in offline mode and then access the PF BF3.exe and it will open the game in a dedicated interface like the console versions.
if it was a hitbox issue, then you could go into a private match with a friend on your host and test the hitboxes themselves, but the hitboxes in cod (and just about every other game) are spot on the characters like they should be.
It's an amazing experience to play this game. Insurgency is the only thing that somewhat relates to this game, but this one is even bigger. The only thing I don't like would probably be the lack of anti-tank weaponry (a panzerfaust or AT mines would have been handy).
Can you do a short comparioson of this (RO2) and Iron Front? I really like RO2 and im speculating on getting Iron Front too, and your thoughts would be appreciated.
Tanks in ARMA are HP based? I'd have thought they would improve that (not an ARMA fan). I can tell you though in RO2 the tanks are modeled correctly, down to fuel, ammo storage and mechanical sections within the tank that can be damaged and destroyed if you penetrate the armor correctly in a spot with critical hardware behind it. Really wish someone would turn this game into a WWII tank battle sim in a mod, it's nothing short of amazing.
Side, I think the fact that there are more "dumb downed" servers vs the realistic or classic servers is a telltale sign of the gamers today. Which is sad because there is no challenge or skill, just comes down to reaction speed.I couldn't stand the fast paced Battlefield and COD play style not to mention the mentality. I started playing RO 1 and was impressed with the maturity of most of the players. Once again Side, I find myself agreeing with you more and more. You are a rare breed of gamer.
For those who is checking the video today. I am playing arma 2, arma 3, arma 2 ww2 mod, bf3, bc2 etc etc, im especially in love with arma series and i am gonna tell you, red orchestra is totally epic if you like the game style that arma offers.my opinion is that red orchestra is even more hardcore game than arma but it is indeed epic.a bit hard and you need to give it a few hours to get used to the game but once you get those kills stacking, its sweeet.buy it now!also pacificDLC will be out soon!
If you like highly simulated war games but want to see one that is not an FPS, check out Men of War (I love the assault Squad stand alone because the dev keeps updating it, while another team makes poorly make hash outs). Anyway, in Men of War, there are ballistics in the game, units will die from one bullet and machine guns destroy entire infantry sections; however, if you position your troops right, they will even take out a tiger with a well aimed AT grenade.
