It didn’t happen in the novel. In the book, the final scene takes place in Aunt Shaw’s back study at a meeting Lennox arranged but mysteriously doesn’t show up for. They are therefore alone in the room and Margaret begins making the business offer while seated at a desk. Thornton interrupts her by saying “Margaret!” (he always called her Miss Hale) at which time she hides her face with her hands. Thornton crosses the room to kneel beside her and tells her quietly if she doesn’t send him away, he’ll claim her in some “presumptuous way”. She lays her head on his shoulder and he gathers her close. There’s no kiss. Just a silent loving embrace. The scene is touching and tender. It seemed to me what two people who’d been through more than a year of utter heartbreak needed. I personally think public kissing would have been too intense too soon for Margaret. But do I love the scene in the movie? Oohhhh, yes. The sweetest kissing scene I’ve ever seen. Just probably not historically likely, and probably not in character for these two reserved people.
