dear friend,
i hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you from my little converted office- I'm hesitant to call it a studio at the moment because I have yet to do anything art related. I've been pretending like school doesn't exist for the last week and now, I'm about to pound out some homework assignments that are due in less than 3 days...haha
if you're wondering about lilith (because I didn't explain much)- she decided to stay in RI because she began a full time job, and they are currently working remotely and she is staying in her house with house mates and prairie. I might not get to see her until late august! she is a real adult now haha ~and I am very thankful she got a car for commuting just in time, or else cleaning and packing would've been a very different story...
Home now, I will try my best to be consistent and update you! I don't know why, but my mind's been bugging me lately. I feel, not lazy, but like... shy/reserved and I don't want to produce any art because I feel a lot of expectations from myself... and I also feel like if I don't do something really impressive, then I will have wasted time I could spend doing school-related work you know- but this is dumb! If someone told me this, I would encourage them to embrace creating and to not feel guilty.
I have these conversations with myself often haha... ok fine i will do it.
I shall paint! I will....
sending you my love, and just know that you shouldn't feel guilty, either, if you just want to do something for fun and realize it may not contribute to anything 'productive' or 'developmental'. life is to be lived, after all. that's all from me for now- love you

I feel sudden nostalgia because I have followed you since your first year at RISD. Today I got the results of my thesis defense and I have finished my Bachelor in Fine arts. I feel several emotions at the same time, going from joy to sadness to resentment against art schools. I feel injustice for losing a studio space and access to material. I might be pessimistic but I don’t think online classes will work for art schools. It will be okay for theory but not for practice.

I dropped out of my art class I was taking because it was too difficult to follow online, especially since we aren’t allowed to use studios. Hopefully I’ll be able to retake the class again next semester

Yes! I'm a 2nd year and I miss studios so much. I get 100x more work done in a studio than at home with online classes.

yesss! i'm not an art student anymore, i'm currently studying animation, and many students can't focus at home, others don't even have computers... it's such a shame :(

I'm on the same boat having originally been graduating this semester. As a ceramics/sculpture major, there really isn't another place to work other than in the studio. I cried the day they shut it down. Now I feel too numb to do anything creatively, whether for pleasure or for my online classes. It makes the time I spent during the last four years feel like a waste (I know it's not really, but still). All this compounded on top of the uncertainty of finding a job that doesn't kill my soul in the eventual recession. Really makes you feel things.

The part when she said 宝贝，我会想你的，你会想我吗 made me cry. I always say that to my dog when I need to leave for school (to study aboard), every time I bust in tears to think that I will be apart from my dog for months... she passed away last August, and it still didn’t felt real to me. I miss her so much and sometimes I look at the night sky and think 我好想你，你也想我吗。it’s too emotional

Dear friend, because there is no address more fitting, This is a hard time for all of us. I am happy to see you safe with your family, it is important to know oneself surrounded with loving support in a time like this. Things can never stay the same, however much we want them to, but this change is especially cruel. It happened so quickly, and nobody was prepared. You will miss school, that is a chapter in your life that you weren't able to finish the way you wanted to, but the lessons and friends it gave you are permanent. I am still in uni, halfway through my studies now, but this semester is uncertain and I find myself separated from my family, in a different country. It's difficult, especially because I know there is a chance that the pandemic will affect my family too and I can't be there with them. I feel like watching what you're going through makes me less alone. We are all in this together, even if we are half the world away from each other. Im packing to leave uni too and i got at 14:00 ish and i heard your family members speak hubei-dialect and i just. Couldnt help but cried. It is the dialect i grew up with too. My mother’s side of the family are all in Wuhan and i’ve just been so worried. And it’s so good to hear another grandma speak hubei-dialect too. Idk. Thank you for this.

We're 3 years apart, so I first started watching you in my last year of undergrad and you were just moving into your dorm at RISD. When you're in your early 20s, 3 years can make for a lot of change and maturity. I just started the first year of my PhD this year, and you're now where I was 3 years ago. I've learned a lot from you during this time, and it's humbling and nostalgic to see your academic and artistic journey, and also hearing about everyone's own stories of growth and maturity in the comments. Today I decided would be a good day, that I would treat it like any other day. I got my coffee and my toast, sat down and watched Annabelle’s video - like I did most mornings before everything. I smile - thinking how happy I am that she’s back with her family. Laughing at her nan’s and mum’s exclaims about her fabric, and grinning until my my cheeks bloom rosy when seeing Tyler embrace her. I moved out too :( I was living in the dorms, and next year i will be in an apartments so it won't really be the same. I thought I would have more time with the people who lived with me. My entire life was at school... I honestly don't know how I'm going to focus at home, because it's not where I feel most comfortable anymore. I made the world's saddest room tour for myself before leaving so that I could remember things. I don't take a lot of pictures of my friends but now I wish I had taken more. School is cancelled, my internship is cancelled. It's insane. Really sad. I guess we're all just trying our best. Hope things are as good as they can be for you, given the circumstances.

I hadn't realized, when you first showed your print that it was meant to be the faces of your family... I was unexpectedly touched by it in this vlog and even teared up a bit, such a special moment to see your grandma and mom holding it. It's so strange to watch this, having followed you since your first year. I started uni around the same time (though I have been held back for mental health reasons and so I'm not done with it yet) and the memories I have of your college vlogs all remind me of my own experiences. As I just packed up and moved out of my dorm this weekend, leaving behind the memories of the space, this felt very comforting to watch. It's so hard to say goodbye when things get turned upside down so quickly and nothing feels like a proper goodbye. Seeing you reunite with Tyler and your family literally made me cry. Everything is extremely hard right now and I know leaving everything in RI so abruptly wasn't easy at all but it's nice to see moments of joy. My school shut down too but my mom advised me not to come home during the break so as not to risk any of us getting sick, and I live with my partner so I wouldn't want to be away from her and our cats for long either. It's been hard not being able to be back with my family especially at a time like this. I've felt the same reservations about making art too. It seems like now would be such a great time to be creative and make literally anything. The last critique I had before break also left me kind of floating and feeling lost so :/ trying not to feel too down on myself for not having any real desire to make anything right now. the little things you were doing: taking down a photo from the wall, having a last dinner with your roommate, cooking perishables.... these are all things i just did to pack up and go home. i was so anxious about the plane that i didn't realise until we took off and i looked over my uni town leaving behind me how much i was losing. i cried like a baby! just want you to know that someone out there has done the same crappy things as you to leave in a hurry. i hope you're well & lots of love

so sorry about the abrupt end to your time at risd, but i hope that being home brings you comfort in these crazy times. i am from minnesota and go to school in copenhagen, denmark, and while i wanted to go home, it was just too risky from the long travel :-( so seeing you home with your family makes me feel at peace in some ways. thank you for sharing, hope you and your family are safe!

Bringing my own computer home was its own thing, but your videos have been hitting me the hardest because you’re about to graduate. I actually had to stop watching the last one because it REALLY hit me. (I think your mood brings me back to my graduation from college, too.) Wow, I've been watching you since you moved into your dorm! Even though we are the same age, I looked up to you and your independence, I went through an abusive relationship my freshman year and I mirrored your independence and willingness to explore when I finally got out of that situation, you really have been a powerful woman in my life. I got lucky, my boyfriend and I found an apartment right before my school kicked us out for the year and we got to stay in our college town. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy in your family! I'm so sorry your senior show and the rest of the college experience has been taken from you too. I'm a senior art major myself and my senior exhibition is also canceled in lew of an online alternative. Now don't get me wrong I'm incredibly lucky to have the option to graduate as well and it may be selfish, but I think it's okay to grieve this a little. At least for me, it feels like a right of passage, the final hoorah, everything I've worked for in my last four years. Putting it up in the gallery and seeing your hard work pay off is such an intimate and uplifting feeling, along with having others see it as well. It isn't the same online. Again it may be selfish and I know I'm incredibly lucky but I'm also sad, so sad that something that meant so much to me and all of the art graduates is gone so quickly, along with the rest of our college experience. I live in my art building, it's my home. I've had so many wonderful and terrible memories there that have shaped me so much as an artist in that building. I was trying to mentally prepare myself for that change in my life and I haven't gotten the chance to, as I'm sure many other seniors are dealing with as well. And I'm sorry, for all of us.

you set the mood pretty gloomy for this video and, I like it. and I know I'm late watching this video. but I'm crying a lill bit at the part where your mom and grandma are talking about your work especially the part where your mom said "yeah she made it" and "this is what she studies" I'm bawling my eyes out. This hit home with me- just graduated, packed up my room from college and moved into a new house to temporarily live until this is over. So many big changes so fast. I'm sorry that you won't get to complete your thesis the way you wanted to. I'm missing out on my senior year of high school and i won't get to finish my senior banner that all the art kids get to participate in!

I relate so much to this right now... I was studying abroad and last week I had to pack my entire apartment in a few hours as I had to take the last flight back home the day after. I am grateful that my family and I are safe and I know there is so much tragedy happening for some people/families, so my situation is not the worst. However, it is still sad and stressful to have things change so suddenly, specially when there are no clear indications about anything concerning classes, graduation or even the situation in general. I am glad you're well and safe. We have to look out for each other at this moment and be generous and kind. Only then can we go through this 💕

intentional or not, i absolutely LOVE how she used TV Girl for the bg music to end this chapter of her life. i remember first watching her when she moved into her college dorms way back. she used TV Girl quite often in her vlogs that time. time flies so quickly, i was a 17-year old high schooler when i first started watching annabelle. i’m now in my second year of college, turning 21 this year :’)

This video makes me pretty sad as it is feels like rewatching what I went through a week and a half ago. One day I lived in London, worked as an au-pair and had plans for my four months left there, the next I was packing my life into my suitcases in less than 4 hours, flew home to join my parents in isolation in the South France, knowing I’d never be back in the house I’ve lived in for two years. No time for goodbyes is hard... I left behind a little life I made for myself, and a little boy I cared for during that time. I’m ever so grateful to be with my parents and my sister, to be in a small village, in a house with a garden, rather than confined in a flat in a big city, but those are still strange times. I will pray for you and your family Annabelle. May you all stay safe and healthy ❤️

I totally relate to everything you mention in this video. We were given two days notice with my course to move our stuff out of the studios and to finish up documenting our work. All of us in our fourth and final year kind of drifted off in those last couple of days and weren't able to say goodbye properly, so it's nice that you got something like that with your classmates. I had a day to vacate my flat and now I'm back with my parents for the first time in years. It's all very strange and uncertain. I think all we can do is continue on with our work as best as we can to reclaim some sort of normality and try to finish our courses as best as we can.

i've been watching your videos for years now, and even though i don't comment very often i always appreciate all the effort you put in. this really feels like the end of an era and it's all so unexpected, i hope things settle down for you in a way you can deal with well soon. we truly do live in a strange strange time right now. i'm only a first year art student, but my year was also cut short as my country went into a semi lockdown a couple weeks ago and closed down public places, so i guess i can understand how you must be feeling, hah. i hope you're doing well. thank you for all you do. it's seen and appreciated

I got sad at the same time I'm so excited to see how everything is changing. Of course, there'll always be fear of the unknown and such, but I feel that everything's going to be OK as cliche as it may sound. Love that you put subtitle for the cats * _ * especially this time it was sooo funny!
