John Sykes was so good that Coverdale had to replace him with three guitarists - Vai, Vandenburg, and Vivian Campbell. And it still wasn’t enough. Sykes is one of the greats.
He fuck, i remember him with thin lizzy in 1983 at Reading rock. Was pretty average at the best. Brainwashed fan boys🤔😂😂. Its a wonder he can play at all with all the fan boys crawling in and out of his arse, must b bloody painful 🤣.
Sykes gave Whitesnake their best album. The guy is incredible. The solo in this song proves that. Once he left, that was it. His solo albums are fantastic.
@@theonlyredspecial vibrato, is in his finger or equipment, I am not professional. I saw so many Great guitar heroes even SRV live in Austin, but I am obviously obsessed with John tight and heavy playing. One and Only!
John Sykes won the game of life - wrote songs that will be listened to for eternity and made enough money to walk away from the crazy lifestyle. God bless one of the best rock guitarist/songwriter in history.
Compare this version to all other RU-vid versions of this song, especially the Donington with Vai and Vandy. Sykes sheer passion eats all other versions for lunch. Best lineup for this band, and by far the best WS guitarist.
John Sykes was such a powerful influence on me as a 9 year old barely able to get my hands across the fret-board and then as a teenager with his $400 electric guitar still hungry to learn and practicing in his room. As an adult (48 year old) he continues to inspire. His tone was incredible and his command of the instrument stands alone. Lets not forget he is covering rhythm & lead guitar here. Sykes is a legend & I await his next album. Much respect to Mr Sykes.
John Sykes brought life to The Tygers of Pan Tang , Thin Lizzy & Whitesnake. His playing was easily recognisable and always excellent. He also looked like what a guitar hero should look like.
@@CaribSurfKing1 He's released a number of 'Sykes' albums that only saw US releases. He also spent a large part of the mid - late 90s and 2000s on the road with the boys from Thin Lizzy
When he says, "as we look meekly on..." that means just what everyone is saying, that Sykes is "God like" on the guitar - so much that all we can do is simply look "meekly" on. meek·ly /ˈmēklē/ Learn to pronounce adverb in a quiet, gentle, and submissive manner. "to keep the peace, she nodded meekly and smiled" Coverdale committed probably one of the biggest injustice to rock n roll by replacing this guy. At the same time, Coverdale summed up his stint with the great John Sykes by saying, "If John (Sykes) just acted on .02 common sense, he will be alright..."
I've seen many guitar solos...but this is absolutely the most epic solo I've ever seen. Nobody else can touch this combination of balls and technique. I watch this a couple times a year.
@@Hehehe-hf7rq i did read it was because coverdale wasn't really happy about the fact, that he shared the spotlight with sykes... but not sure about that 100%
100% agree. David said in a recent interview that he has been reaching out to everyone he has ever had a problem with to bury the hatchet, and he said so far, Sykes is the only one who hasn't replied to him. It is a total shame. Egos suck.
@@drpaulmasonphd Once again it’s Dr. Know it all... the guy ranting about Eric Sykes the English tv writer while everyone else is talking about John Sykes the guitarist. What better way to embarrass yourself by not knowing what the hell you’re talking about while trying to pretend you do!
hes unreal, but there are literally dozens who are "better". he did create an amazing album with WS, yes, & his sound & solos were awesome, but come on?
What a night at Rock in Rio 1985 .... Whitesnake, then OZZY, Then Scorpions and closing the night ACDC. Maybe the great back to back to back to back Lineup EVER at any festival.
Plain and simple .. this guy is a monster on guitar , his balls out playing ,great concept of gear and guitar sound , in my opinion one of the most dynamic players in hard rock .
Mary, mother of Jesus, John Sykes... you absolutely melted that guitar neck and simultaneously kicked my ass all over the living room with that solo. And as great as that sounds thru my computer speakers. I can only imagine how it sounded 30 or 40 rows deep at 120 dB... Props to you, sir. Outstanding...
I have seen Blue murder live . After the great show i met Mr Sikes . I met a Gentelmen . I was so lucky . That was 30 years ago . It feels like minute ago . Such a great human been . Thank you for ever Sir .
@@REDWASP777 mmmmm if i do say so myself. so right pamela even to this day he still looks good. It's hard to believe he is 61 now. I could listen to him play guitar all day . i just love his tone and his voice to.
Oh my!! Johnny boy on beast mode !!! He's a guitar god....absolutely awesome, such a badass!! 😎 Coverplant out of pitch as usual...he's embarrassing damn!! 😣
IKR! He couldn't handle JS's talent. So obvious. I see that DC is a catty, borderline petty musician. He sabotaged JS when he saw that once the songwriting, guitar playing and JS's looks (yes, DC petty AF) would be in the same spotlight as his very good but not great singing, he gutted JS and formed a radio friendly band with guys who couldn't/didn't overshadow him.
Coverversion is way overrated. Sykes, Murry & Powell could have done thos without him. DC should have stayed backstage doing rails of Rio blow and primping his hair.
He was good during early Whitesnake years...from the Slide it In album tour on with MTV and worldwide concerts he really went downhill...he changed his singing style a lot over the years too from a deeper and thunderous voice to a higher and screaming tone...I think that was not his natural and most suitable range and it ended up totally ruining his voice...
David is in his own key, not a great live singer. Great in the studio. I can kind of see why he got rid of John sykes. John could sing, write , and was an incredible guitar player. John over shadowed him live. You could sense the jealousy from David when the crowd heard John's name. Incredible player.
@@theonlyredspecial must b a different Coverdale to the 1 i remember seeing live HEADLINING monsters of rock in 1983 with meatloaf and zz top supporting, and 1n 1990 with Aerosmith supporting them. The same Coverdale who never once struggled to sing. The same Coverdale who fronted deep purple with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar in early 70s, a REAL guitar god of the highest standards, and was never overshadowed by or jealous of him. Dont know now old you are, but ur knowledge of whitesnake and David Coverdale is very limited.
He's off in the beginning but at around 3:02, David signals that he can't hear, either himself or the band. It gets a little better. John Sykes kills it. He's still one of my favorites to this day
And Coverdale claimed he wrote all the guitar parts on the 1987 album...haha..that's bullshit!! Anyone who listens to Blue Murder..and has the albums...knows it has the same guitar tones and sound..and that is all JOHN....just incredible!! 1 of my FAV guitar players ever!! And the solo in this song is killer...WOW!!!!! Cheers John!!
Yeah he might have wrote some rhythm parts for songs like Looking for Love, Is This Love, Don't Turn Away etc. but it's very obvious the bulk of the riffs are pure John.. especially shit like Children Of The Night, Bad Boys, You're Gonna Break My Heart Again.. just oozing pure Sykes goodness!
@@FerusZaz i dont think he really did. If you listen to the debut Blue Murder album you'll see every single riff composed on the 1987 sounds 100% like him. Sykes has also stated that Coverdale could barely play the guitar when he joined, so nah. I dont know if he can play any other instrument but if he couldnt, then he just wrote the lyrics which are pretty shit if you ask me lmao. But he was a great singer (here... Not really lol)
@@madden7732 Oh I don't disagree that at LEAST the overwhelming majority of guitar parts on 1987 were written by Sykes. Even the main part of Is This Love is more than slightly evoked in Runaway by Blue Murder. I just mean I wouldn't be in complete disbelief if Coverdale wrote something like the chorus to Don't Turn Away or something more subtle like that.
There is also the BS that Keith Olsen brought in Dan Huff to perform a lot of the guitar parts. This solo here proves Keith was full of shit. It's about note for note the same one on the album.
Excellent commentary and documentary of the 1987 WHITESNAKE album. You were very objective and looked at it from all sides. Your ending with the last three minutes of quotes from John Sykes was phenomenal.
I have both the us and uk version of slide it in from ‘84 .. John Sykes is the very reason why Whitesnake “ Slide It In “ is my favorite album of1984 !... his playing is that amazing
Perfect Guitar Hero of mine. He's in my top 5. I will always love him! If a History book of Guitarists comes out He's got to be in it. Massively talented so Happy he's here to enjoy.
Sykes has used that same guitar, which is a signature model from Gibson, for many years. They were only commercially produced for 2 years, I believe. If you have one, it's rare and worth keeping. Now I don't know if they ever made any retros, but the originals are a rare bird!
This is what made my 28 year old beautiful blind wife love John James Sykes. She said...he's a monster. The best thing was leaving even though the mix of Johns guitar and David's sexy blues voice was a moment of legend. Virgo and Leo lol However without that we would not have blue murder like mustaine being fired to form Megadeth. God knows what he is doing. Sykes appice and Franklin was insane and showed us all that Sykes talent went beyond just some guitar player. 🐣
Some of the best recognised riffs are from Mr Sykes .........Cold Sweat , Still of the Night , Blackjack from the Tygers days and the awesome Ptolemy from Blue Murder . Can't wait for the new album . If you are a big Tygers fan have a look for the Jess Cox interview and learn some history on Mr Sykes 🤘👍🍺🍺🍺🍺
@44seconds...meow! Oh dear...John Sykes too talented and far prettier than poor David...he'll have to go! My favourite WS album is the '87 with Sykes on point. Riffs and tone were astonishing.
Sykes is immediately recognisable - whether it was with Tygers Of Pantang *way* back in the day, or with Thin Lizzy, or Whitesnake... John Sykes was replaced by some seriously talented guitarists, but the one that came closest to this level of musicianship and sheer ferocity, IMO, was Doug Aldrich! And Reb Beach too, of course - yet another criminally underrated guitarist....
This was the 1985 concert guys, as I worked as guitar tech for both Ozzy and Whitsnake. There was no Rock in Rio in 1995. Barrie (Barru) Evans Guitar Tech
Technique-wise (I may be wrong though), John has always been on the par with Yngwie, but despite this John has been severely overlooked by rock community, which is unfair.
John is pretty fast tbh, I think those who try to dig deeper on 1987, eventually find Sykes like I did. The guitarwork just blew me away I had to know!
