Thabk u man. It's been at least 5 years I've been working on this song and would have never gotten to where I am if it wasn't for you. When I was younger I'd play by ear but past few years I decided to learn to read music and learn that how the musician actually plays it is alot different than just listening sometimes. This is one of those times. When I got serious about playing I was blown away at how technical and difficult and awesome this song actually is. It's the main song I religiously practice and I'll never be exactly how I'd like to be and that's just fine because I love figuring out what I've been doing wrong and entering that next level where u play it correctly or at least finally unsrrstsnding a area where before you didn't really understand. I love getting that weird epiphany like shit I've been doing wrong this whole time till now. That's happened so many times with this song and with your help I've learned so much it's insane. Some months I might only practice a handful of time, than other times I play 100s of times a month and usually each time I'm grtting the confidence and self esteem to finally sit down at the set I end up watching this video. Sometimes once. Other times over and over. So I thank you for how detailed and informative you are. This is by far the most helpful drum cover/drum practicing video that's out there. I always end up noticing something or realizing something new or different or even just getting more comfortable on my set. So from the bottom of my heart I thank you so much. You've help me become the drummer I've always wanted to be and still in progress. I'll never play perfectly or might not have the best set but at least It'll be enough for me to where I'm ashamed or in over my head. I'm right where I want to be, not good, not bad but comfortable. And I again thank you. Hope you have a good one. Sorry for the rant. Just got done playing and realized how many times I've watched your video lol. Thanks mate!!!
Hi Rob! Just wanted to say thanks really. I've been following your videos for a while now and they're just brilliant. You're a natural teacher and I always take something away from your videos. Keep it up chief!
Thanks for the opportunity to attempt to learn these complex drum rhythms. I admittedly got lost early on . Back to drum chart reading . Ill keep having stabs .
Do you do a break down of Tool's pushit and 46 n 2 per chance ? Admittedly im feeling very Tool centric of late . Thanx for your uploads ill check those out as well .
Can you do a lesson on the intro tom groove of lateralus if you could? I've wanted to play that a long time and it's not that fast but I can't quite wrap my head around the polyrhythmic, changing time signatures. Thanks for lessons:)
That double kick/tom triplet.. I saw that live, but I didn't know if I had it right.. THIS is EXACTLY what I needed to see!! Keep smashing, Buddy! #smashercode
So I know you posted this a couple years ago but I just finally discovered your channel (and subbed). Love the Tool lessons and the way you break it down. Also I think it's very cool that you don't get hung up about making a mistake or getting out of time, just let the camera roll! So do you figure this out by ear and then transcribe? I find it so hard to pick out the subtleties that DC incorporates into his play.
Hey Rob, great lesson, I have two questions: Do you work all of these songs out by ear for the lessons? And also is that just a left hand thing using your right foot for the hi hat or is that a Danny Carey thing? Not familiar with this particular drummer.
sorry this is complicating it waaay too much for me. i guess im more of a self taught "feel it out" drummer though. your very talented though and we both agree danny is a god.
Wow! I'm really impressed. it's crazy how one of Tool's most radio friendly songs is one of the most polyrhythmic on drums. sounds so easy but so not.... do you have a video breaking down the solos on the grudge or forty six and 2? I'm interested to see if your interpretation differs from mine
@@DrumsTheWord I assumed all the videos on this YT channel are on your site. Seems like posting videos on YT but not your site could cause some confusion, as I was going to sign up just for these Tool songs you have on YT. I'm glad I did a site search before signing up, even though, I still might. Maybe you should put a disclaimer below the videos that aren't on your site, so there is no confusion.
@@tomjoad6993 I offer FULL song lessons which are indicated as PREVIEWS here on RU-vid...but then I also have mini FREE videos which teach little famous sections of songs like this. The video and notation for this lesson are on my website and you can find the link in the description. Online Members to the website when they sign up get access to ALL of my lessons! Thanks for your interest :)
When does he go in and out of those two? It's played as one rhythm. Check out Aron Edgar's videos on polyrhythms. You have to go in and out the two times to be polyrhythmic. Otherwise even a basic groove would be a polyrhythm. Bass drum playing half notes, snare drum playing half, hi hats playing 8th notes, etc.
I can play this I can't play any of the polyrhythm lessons taught by my teacher or Aron Edgar. This is technically a polyrhythm as even the basic rock beat is technically but it's played in one time signature, to be a polyrhythm there's has to be two or more time signatures and the drummer must switch back and forth between them. So play the groove in 2/4 for a measure then play it in 3/4 for a measure while two instruments like the hi hat and bass drum are playing the two on hi hat and 3 on bass drum the whole time. But if your not switching time signatures it's not a polyrhythm,
Yep. I was. You can hear me trying to get back in time. I like to keep my mistakes in my videos in order to demonstrate common problems others might experience. I explain exactly how to play the lick even though my demonstration with the click isn't perfect.
www.DrumsTheWord.com thats cool. it sounds good. i was just messing with ya a bit. aenima is def a fun song to play. me and my buddy started a tool cover band. hes playing guitar and singing and im drumming. this song has got to be one of my favorites to play. im convinced danny must have summoned evil spirits to write some of these drum parts
