We hear a lot of artists express these concerns about doing portraits. In addition to dealing with artistic standards, the portrait subject also has expectations about what they should look like. It's a true test of skill, and it takes more than just accurate rendering to create a likeness and capture personality. We are glad to see Lilstarnerd returning to this type of painting, because she's so good at it!

The problem is that sometimes you can't draw what the person looks like but what they think they look like and those things don't really match up

@@snowpanther7076 Yeah, the artist isn't exactly in a great position to crush fantasies. Not a good way to secure a commission!

You're speaking to my art soul with this!!!! I can't agree more, I consider myself a fine artist who mainly does paintings involving people but for like 2 years or more everything felt bland and just 'content' to me so this year I'm starting of with like mini paintings to rekindle that love. Lovely portrait in this video and the process of it was just amazing as always

I love the design of this painting, it’s so pretty! It’s also really interesting to see that your art style is so clear that it looks the same with both acrylic and gouache ❤

Great video! It's difficult to find the balance sometimes of painting what you want to paint because you enjoy it, but also what would appeal to potential buyers. For years I felt so stuck in this loop, I stopped making art in the end. Right now i'm just trying to learn more skills and enjoy the art making process again 😊 Love your work, thanks for sharing!

Oh yes, I would LOVE a royalty free site with figure drawing / portrait references of 'real' people instead of over-edited models 😅 But until then we at least have your Skillshare class to look forward too, it's on my list for sure now!

I've recently felt similarly with portraits and market desire. A couple of weeks ago, I sold one to a business owner and she put it right in her office. It spoke to her and that made me feel very happy. Even if they aren't for everyone as home pieces, I like going covert in spaces where they are displayed (gallery spots etc.) and listening to people have organic reactions to them. Quite fun and interesting to see how different another person's perspective can be.

For some reason I don't really enjoy the process of painting a Portrait. Nowadays I just love to paint beautiful Landscapes without any human touch. Painting Portraits doesn't make me feel genuinely happy ( sometimes i only do it for commission but never really because I love it )

On Facebook there are lots of groups where photographers share their photos for artists. I'm sure that also includes for portraits. I don't paint portraits so haven't looked into that topic, but it might be a good tip.

And you can also do portraits as a commission where subscribers share their selfies if they'd like to.

You are doing a Skillshare class? Yay! 🎉 Also: feel you and the difficulty dealing with plagiarism and references. I’ve resolved to A) credit references/get permission. B) use my own. C) use many references for one piece so it is different enough to not be a copy of an idea/image. But feel you. I avoid Pinterest because of the lack of sources. Wikimedia commons can be a good source, too.

I feel the topic of this video so much. I used to only do portraits when I was first learning but it finally got to a point where I wanted to expand my skill set. I still do them from time to time but I respect my past and I can now say I’m skilled in painting and drawing many other things

I feel you so hard about the quality of Pinterest vs stock photos. One thing that I want to start doing to combat that is getting reference from TV and film. Individual frames are such a small part of the whole film that it doesn’t feel as bad.

Regarding Pinterest. I will take elements, and colors I like, but I never do direct recreations. I always *vaguely* reference. Partly because I hate the idea of just doing a paint by numbers recreation, and I also am not good at replicating facial likeness anyhow.

National Geographic has some great portret photography! The photographer is always credited, so maybe that could be an option?
