@AnthraxSK exactly. Shadowfiend should be popped in your opening rotation, and then every time it's up after that. MF crits reduce the cooldown of the fiend by 10seconds, so you should be able to get multiple fiends per fight.

For any of you looking for a good timer, its DoTimer. I'd reccommend looking it up on google if you cannot find it on Curse. Its a great addon for any DoT class, and HoTs, so it works with every DoT and manages Buffs.
@MatthewMozart14 most of what you said is correctly minus the part about shadow orbs, priority is first to making sure to have empowered shadow. If you have your empowered shadows buff up then waiting for 3 shadow orb is a marginal dps rotation. Aside from what you mentioned the thing he did to kill his dps was the unnecessary movement that generally resulted in his mismanaged dot up time.
@WeabooWho blizz said it's supposed to be used for adds that spawn that die quickly. so if a mob pops up that'll die before you're dots can do real dmg, use mind spike.
@MatthewMozart14 5. If you have proc / on use trinkets or heroism its never a DPS loss to re-apply DP (Devouring Plague) so you can take advantage of procs. 6. Start out with a VT as the tanks running at the boss. 6.5. If you cant, consider applying SWPain, and 1 mindflay for an Orb. I know it sounds strange, at higher gear levels your pretty likely to nail an orb, and can do [Trinkets] or [Potion] + MBlast + (giving you emp shadow buff) VT + DP and score a nice DPS increase at the start.

i know this is a very noob question, but is it worth droping mind flay in mid channel to renew your DOTs on the Target? i know normally cutting a spell short is bad, but maybe its different now your DOTs are doing all the Damage. Good work by the way :D helps alot, upload more! ty
Speaking as a (possibly former) affliction warlock, I have to say that Shadow priests look way more fun to me than my lock. Everything about shadow looks cooler and it all seems to fit in together a lot better than with affliction
I also open with Mind Spike, since it increases the crit chances of MB. Also, as a range shadowy apparitions are messed up IMO...I find that it takes forever for my aparitions to get to target, since I'm far away and I rather not be moving around, but casting MF. The moving around is more counter-intuitive to me than re-casting SW:P or DP. Are the aparitions really worth the hassle or talent points? Thanks for the video!
That rotation is still valid however you want to use mind blast whenever its up to keep empowered shadow up. That increases your dps much more than this rotation it is tested and proven. Thumbs up so everyone can see this!
WIth the way they changed Mind Spike you could have used it to clear your DoTs when you wanted to start the actual test and when you were done with it to stop recount from lowering the DPS it shows.
@alkyd85 I think if you practice you can time your stops to your latency. If you have 300 latency (that's me on a good day in beta) and you have a 1.5 second gcd, you can walk for 1.2 seconds and not lose dps. It's even better if you have 2 or more instants to cast in a row. I'm not going to claim to have done it perfectly in this vid, but it sounds like a fun skill to master, and quite unique.
@steveforthewolf Uh yeah, that's what you do. The only time he constantly kept moving was to purposely proc it to demonstrate what Shadowy Apparition is. In your actual rotation (and the one he maintained at the end of the video) you only move after you cast an instant, like SWD or DP.
@sunkrakken i would say not i have been playing a shadow priest for about 1 year and i had the help of one that played since wow was launched and from what i was told you are correct it is designed to maintain dps in high movement fights while Mindflay should be your overall main attack as it adds shadow orbs and increases your dps more than moving since mathmaticly if you think about it while moving you have a 60% chance to proc your apperitions while mindflay has a 100% per tic ever .8 seconds
for anyone watching this that want to play shadow well. listen up. here are a number of things you can do to raise you dps. 1.he never used shadow fiend. open with that and it should always be on CD 2. dont use SWD mana is not an issue on any of the cata raid bosses. 3. get a dot tracker add on "MFclip" is a good one. this alone is like 2 or 3k dps if used correctly. 4. you never want to use mind blast unless you have 3 shadow orbs. if he did all of these things he would have pulled around 10k
@Sparks71x9 it's probably because this is a pve guide and shackle undead is pretty useful for crowd control in some dungeons with undead mobs like heroic SFK
This video can be pretty miss leading. Its important to mention that empowered shadows and evangelism don't effect your current DOTs power, they are only buffing the spells on there next cast. It should be SW:P > MFx5 - then cast Mind Blast if you have a shadow orb. If not use DP > VT, check again for shadow orb and MB, then mind flay spam. Also always re-apply SW:P after you have empowered shadows as it refreshes automatically it will remain at its initial strength.
@xcrunner4life2006 You can't cast Mind Flay when you are on GCD. That's why you only move when you are on GCD. You can learn to time the pre-cast of your mind flay to your latency (using the new latency-correction spell casting feature). Of course I'm not going to move instead of casting spells.
@WeabooWho i find using mind spike on add control (i.e. burst dmg on val'kyr's in the Lich King fight rather then putting your dots on it and only using half of their duration).... i do know that this talent comes after lvl 80 but the lich king fight is just an example of where it would of been useful and fights that it could be useful in the future
Everyone is saying that Mind Spike is not used in the main rotation, I disagree. I use 3 Mind Spikes off the bat then my DoT's then a Mind Flay then a Mind Blast then return to the normal rotaion of using MB with 1 orb and not using MS. I am only 83 atm but it seems to work nicely for large burst damage. Let me know what you think, Thanks.
So, tgn. What class is going to top the charts in your opinion? I think of rerolling my ret pally. I don't know if I sould go for unholy dk, arcane or frost mage. If i go for dk can you tell me what dps I should be expecting in raids? Any help appreciated, Thanks
@WeabooWho Spike damage, possibly pvp or hitting targets that are almost dead anyway. The short term dps on mind spike/MB combos is fairly high. I agree that it seems odd and counter intuitive.
@MatthewMozart14 but why would you wanna stack 3 shadow orbs? from what I understood it doesnt seem to matter if you have 1 or 3 of them, since they end up doing 14& anyway.
k guys mindspike is a PVP spell cuase if you use mindspike 3 times it will give you a 90% crit chance on mind blast and make it instant with the talant paralysis it will make your mindblast make enemy NOT move so a good pvp rotation will be Mindspike>mindspike>mindspike>Mindblast>vampric touch>D plauge>word:death>and Mindflay till the target gets close then use your fear and continue :D and sorry for my english : (
i like what you say but your wrong on one point, if you dot you cant use mind spike but if you mind flay for 5 hits and pop archangel the best rotation is spike x3 and mind blast for and instant cast, rinse repeat till your dark archangel wears off, redot and continue the fight if the mob is still standing i use this rotation and top mages on heroic boss fights for about 15k dps
sorry if this is a stupid question, and im not forsing you to do it but if you want to i woudl be happy :) could u like tell whe what keybinds u have on your spells ? on your dots and other spells like shadow word death mind spike and mind blast and more ? ( for pvp )
i agree wit hthe fact that u should use mind spike when u have dots on the target, but when u doig your burst, mind spike has helped me max my burst quiet well. i start with 3 mind spikes then lead with dots (VP, SWP, DP) then do mind flay 2 times till i get arch proc to 5 then pop that and use mind blast. at this point im already at 22k dps with a ilvl 359. this my work for some and it may also not work depending on your gear setup. =)
My current Gear lvl is 337, and i can do 12k no problem. dont switch to MS when archangel procs, it increases the damage your flay does as well. its STILL more mana effecient and damage effecient to stand there and flay. If i were to use MS for anything, it would be a nuke attack on adds, or 1 i used to finnish up a boss that was low on HP

is doing that little movement to proc shadowy apparition really a dps increase over just spamming mindflay? I'd imagine shadowy apparition is just meant to sustain dps while on high movement fights, like shaman's spiritwalker's grace
I think that Shadowy Apparition talent isn't there for you to move during your rotation but to help you on mobile fights. I think it's not a good idea to move while applying dots as it's slowing you down in your dps rotation actually by having you to stop moving first before you can cast MF again.
@munherpes so so. moreso in Wotlk than i have found them 2 be in cataclysm. some runs have several tho. im finding that as a shadow priest, my primary CC has become Mind Control
Please, can anyone tell me the rotation? I LOVE healing classes, especially shadow priests, but I have no clue on what the rotation is, I just know that he used Mind Blast and Vampiric Touch, please ANYONE, tell me the rotation.
I downloaded shadow orb addon, but when i get 3 stacks it doesnt tell me anything can u please tell me how to fix it, cuz its getting annoying lookin for 3 stacks between all the buffs
I still tend to use MS with my rotation Solo MS, MS, MS, MB, DP, SW:P, MF, MF, MF Boss MS, MS, VT, MB, DP, SW:P, MF, MF, MF (MF) With these, I find that VT is done it's cool down, and DP is nearly ended. Also MS grants me extra damage with MB and makes it an instant cast. What are your thoughts on this?
This is my rotation Mind Spike x2-3, Mind Blast, Vam Touch, Dev Plague, SW: Pain, Mind Flay, Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Archangel, and Repeat... Thumbs up if u agree
Why would you move its not worth casting shadowy aperitions unless necessary im prettty sure mind flay is still part of you main rotation so that you can stack up 3 shadow orbs so you can get a crit with you mind blast, the whole point of being a shadow priest is to always keep your dots on your target Haste + Crit +Intellect = more damage Haste does how fast your dots tick intellect how hard they hit and crit how much harder they can hit, FYI this isn't a good rotation i got that dps at lvl 78
