I always shy away from drawing full scenes and backgrounds because I get intimidated by how hard perspective is for me. Seeing how you approach it in a more casual and experimental way (and also the idea of using basic shapes to place characters and objects) really helped reduce some of that anxiety. Thank you for being so transparent about your process! Your videos are always a joy to watch.
@@KitKatToeBeans of course but adding backgrounds can feel scary because it means you’ve already drawn a piece you like. it can create anxiety around “ruining” the art.
Hey! It's been a while since you've posted this but I want to share my two cents with you. I used to hate drawing backgrounds. Then I think in 2018 or 2019 I did Scaptember (landscape September) and I made like 20+ paintings. Then I fell in love with landscapes. I've so far sold three landscape paintings and gifted many more to friends and family. It all started with a challenge that was, well, challenging. I hope you can overcome your shyness! It actually feels great on this side of that struggle.
I love the absurdity of this piece with the tv and the tentacle in the fridge, the fish head person, and pan on fire. It’s eerie but fun. This would make a great gif with the light flickering, fish bubbling, and the fire moving 💕
My old school wasn't serious about art or anything creative. But my new school has won so many competitions and we focus on art a lot. My Art teacher once liked my assignment and entered me into soo many competitions in the country i am in and I got stressed. But your channel helped me maintain the quality I had in that assignment and now I won the competition! :)
If I had an accordion sketchbook, and was drawing an angle of a room, I would continue the other angles on the other pages so when you open the acordian the whole way, it looks like a panoramic of someone's room ^-^.
Omgggg… playing video games in a fridge with a fishbowl man is like a sweet dream and dream come true. you can play video games and grab food to eat lol
I love that you're so honest with everything. Don't see many artists admitting to artblock and basically just doing whatever they want and I think that's refreshing from watching most artists on here trying to hold up this image of perfection. Art isnt perfect, it's messy, there is really no right or wrong if you enjoy yourself, and sometimes you just dont feel like it, thank you for being so honest ❤❤
I love this too. I learned the importance of sketching and iteration before you work on a final piece in art school. I don't see that mentioned enough on art RU-vid. People need to see this full process to better understand that artists aren't married to a final look which is sure to breed constant disappointment. That alone is part of being an artist. It's constant problem solving. Thank you for showing a true representation of how a piece comes together!
I've always wondered how people have the creativity to come up with these super detailed illustrations. I learned a lot from watching your process and will definitely give it a try someday. Thank you so much for sharing!
I can’t even imagine how you think of all the small things you fit into a cluttered art piece. You could look at it for hours and still not know if you’ve really seen everything. Thank you for the look in on how you find your inspiration.
I think the pan being on fire really works to bring in a feeling of togetherness. Like "oh shit, the stoves on fire! We could put it out, OR we could just stay here and chill a bit longer" The colors also help the vintage feel.
I use the glazing technique too! it's a really easy way to express light i read somewhere that to have more contrast/dramatic effect the colour of the glaze depends on the light like if it's a warm yellow then the things in shadow should be glazed a cool blue i believe i love your artwork i can never do clattered backgruds... or backgrounds in general lol nice work!
I'm so glad that this was my introduction to you and your work! The whole stream-of-consciousness this-is-my-process approach was incredibly helpful and instructive and fun. I've watched a ton of "professional" tutorials (which always seem so dry, boring, and limiting) but being able to see the what/how/why meant that a lot of informational puzzle pieces fell into place for me and I will be bingeing your other videos immediately. Thanks for being you, doing you and letting the rest of us benefit from your experience.
Thank you so much for your comment this honestly means a lot to me!! 🫶🏼 I’m so glad the stream of consciousness approach was useful because it feels so much more natural and is honestly how I do things (no rules or structured plans on this channel lol)! 👀✨
Paper makes ALL the difference. The absolute least I try to do when it comes to watercolour is make sure I have cotton paper. I also prefer Hot Presse paper. If you prefer smooth paper it may be worth trying out. It's amazing for both little details, and things like technical plant paintings. I like to paint realistic succulents so I love it. It's also my go-to for pen and ink art. I actually got Canson XL and it nearly caused me to full out quit watercolour. It had me convinced that I was not actually good at painting and the previous three or so succulent paintings were a fluke. Thing was, it wasn't me. It was the paper. You can't scrub or glaze or blend or anything. Now I use the Canson for basically scrap, testing paints on, or card making (which it is AMAZING for because I like to just do basic free flowing wet on wet between a few colours with penned designes or a pasted artwork on top. It's also excellent for tags. I use it a lot around gift giving holidays.
I watch a lot of artist's videos. I rarely learn as much as I learned from your drawing and your explanations as you go along. I hope you find the confidence that your skill DESERVES as you go along so that you realize you don't have to apologize so much. Your perspective, for instance: you are drawing a cartoon! Wonky perspective is almost a requirement. Your barely-less-than-perfect perspective lends interest to the piece! Anyway - thank you for this video, from another artist/dabbler with imposter's syndrome. 🥰
Thank you very much for the detailed breakdown of your process. It's so interesting and inspiring and helpful. Also, I adore the end result! So cute and cozy and whimsical. The vibe reminds me a bit of the book Un Lun Dun. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. I think you might like it.
I will watch this carefully tonight and I can tell it will help because I want to learn more about the cluttered look since I love drawings with plenty of details and yours are a great example so thank you in advance !
Im going to weigh in here as both an artist and an old person 😁 Because I get the impression that you know you have talent, but you haven't yet figured out that your chaotic approach IS your superpower. I just spent a few hours watching watercolour tutorials because I find it super relaxing watching other people paint. There were flowers and a dragonfly and a dark misty forest... and all of the tutorials were calm and precise and now I've seen ALL the blending and negative painting and pretty things... But i wasn't actually excited about any of it. Then your video popped up and my brain immediately needed to know HOW IN THE WORLD that happened. Because your style and ideas are way cool. And WAAAAY outside my comfort zone. Which is much more interesting than lily pads. Im not sure how many artists you know personally irl, but that chaos you own is a universal thread. Its "The Creator Gene"... It means you MUST create. Lots of people paint or sculpt or whatever because its fun. But other artists will recognize you as their people BECAUSE of that part of you. Your procrastination is your brain reformatting. It's not a negative, it's part of why you can do what you do... just the other side of it. And your 'lack of focus' is actually your brain running at a speed that your hands and mouth have a tricky time keeping up with... so you think you lost focus but actually you're just pausing to rewind so your body can catch up. Im typing all this because as a part of the generation that helped uphold both the system you live in, and the stigmas and mentality that say these are negative qualities, (sorry) I think its important to point out that they are in fact the things that make you superhuman. And a FANTASTIC artist. Im very happy you are on RU-vid connecting with others who might need to see that their chaos is part of their genius.
Love this piece of art! When you were talking about not having every area be busy, I think you were trying to say, you need a place to "rest" your eyes. If you don't have a place to rest the eyes, it is just chaotic. Thank you for sharing!
I think the pan on fire was the right choice. My eye starts at the guy on the floor, then moves to the orange goldfish, then to the orange of the pan on fire. This is a wonderful illustration.
I would add a blue/purple glaze over the shadow part. It would emphasize the warm light from the fridge, because now there is not a lot of difference between light and shadow, it is all yellow. Great details tho! I love the fish character and story in the scene
I believe that your artist intuition is correct, it would benefit from pushing the shadows and adding higher contrast. That being said, this piece Is AWESOME! I love, love, love, the way you did the fridge light spilling onto the characters! It’s so neat to look at! And I love seeing the process behind this kinda stuff. Overall, fun to watch video, and very lovely art piece.
This type of busyness has always impressed me. You could do some interesting search books like, I spy, or where’s Waldo only your take on it. Your artwork is great. Don’t put yourself down or minimize your hard work. Have you ever tried gouache? You’d probably fall in love with it.
I like your clutter art it reminds me of hoarders i supported I am a artist I never thought doing art related to hoarding life it’s really cool I love that I thinking I need try a art piece similar
This is so fun. Thank you for sharing. The concept of “giving a place for the viewer’s eye to rest” is a real thing that they teach in art classes. Your comment makes complete sense.
I don’t think I watched one of your videos before. This one come on my feed on New Years Day, as I want to do art again. This is the tutorial I needed. To watch one how to produce a complex piece of work. I will watch this again and others of your videos. There is a piece of art your reminded me I want to do. I hope tag you on in within a couple of months; as you encouraged me to do it. 😀
I stumbled on to your page with this video. Your honesty about reviews and straightforwardness is welcomed. The artwork is mind-blowing, reminds of art in the 60/70 era.
I don't know what it is, but your art style is my favourite of all art!! I love it so much! ❤️ andddd i always love the way you explain stuff and show your process
I absolutely adore this artwork!! if this turns into a print I will definately be one of the first people to buy it!!you do these illustrations so well and the amount of time and detail u put into these vids is inspiring!!! keep up the amazing work!!
This so so amazing , it blow me . Absolutely want to do something like that but like drawing a very messy living room where there lots of kids toys just cozy but again messy . You really got me so inspired. Your painting is another level . 🧡💛👏🏻 ❄️
I've been binge watching your videos, like an insomniac lol your art is so colorful! I'm in awe. I really want to do art like you, but I have to remind myself that you probably have been doing art longer than I have! Love the videos, editing and the effort that you have put in the video! ❤️❤️❤️
This looks incredible - It gives me that "stacks" vibe from "Ready Player One"... It's very cluttered, and claustrophobic, but also cozy and warm. The fire doesn't really distract, as much as it draws your eyes upward from the fish to the fire, since they are the same color, into the rest of the piece. Maybe this was their version of a cozy fireplace - just making do with what they had. Maybe they intentionally set it so they could get that fireplace feel, without actually having any room for a fireplace. Well, done! Very interesting and thoughtful! I really enjoyed the strategy with the lighting, your thought processes, and your execution. Subbed, bub.
This just popped up for me and I didn't expect to love this so much. Your talent is absolutely everything! I feel so inspired...your hands are so blessed. Just wow 👏💖
I'm a bit of a stubborn "self-learner" because I like to experience my mistakes and discover how to improve. Your videos are so so helpful in that process. It turned out gorgeous! And inspires me to draw and paint with more detail. Big fan of your teaching/show and tell.
HI I just want to say that I really like your art style!! I like watching your videos and they give me inspiration to be creative and draw when I don't have any motivation. Like literally, whenever when im done watching im like: I really want to draw rn📘🖌️🏃♀️Your art and videos are amazing and they always turns out great.💖
I love your process for the lighting. I have to try it because I want to show lighting more instead of my paintings ending up just bleh no visible lighting. I also love the details !! Definitely need to follow your process. I also want to know more about perspective because it's so cool 😭
Holy CATS I love love love this piece! There's so much to look at in it, expected things, unexpected things. I totally did the light trick with the light from the fridge, that looks super rad.
Nicely done, and I love the way you used several techniques. Also I’m another pencil crayon lover, and I love how you can layer several on top of each other, buff them out, use a colourless blender, lots of things that can be done. Great job!
I learn so much from watching your videos! This video and the art is incredible. Also please don’t feel rushed into creating content, we all can wait until whenever you post next 😅
Great tutorial. The way you mask off your light really got my brain working. It's like you're using toned paper. Subscribed and notifications! This is the first time I've seen your channel, I'm going back to figure out what brought you to me. Thank you for sharing. And it is absolutely an artistic tool to have a place for your eyes to rest, just as you never lead the viewers eyes off the page heading to your channel now.
this was so inspiring! I watch so many artists that seem to have such a concrete plan on what theyre gonna do and how theyre gonna do it, and it becomes discouraging when you're as chaotic as me. So seeing your thought process and hearing you changing your mind about stuff was really refreshing! thank you!
Wonderful painting! I got a lotof tipsfrom you, thank you ;) And accordian sketchbook would be fun to do a series of concept sketches. Stretch it out and see how concept and/or skill improves.
Thank you thank you thank you si much. This video means a lot to me. I was trying to do this type of cluttered background for a while but I couldn't grasp it but this video helped me a lot. Thanks a lot❤️
Oh my goodness, I am so thankful for you and this video. You brainstorming your piece had me brainstorming and I now have so many prompts for myself. You should make more videos like this!🧡
Im so glad you are posting a lot more now! I absolutely am in love with your art style and cannot wait to get some of your work from your store. Thank you for being you!!!
Omg it's so beautiful One year ago I realized that i love colouring with watercolor , the problem is I'm impatient And probably I'm not gonna to be satisfied with the color, so thank you so much for the tutorial
