Missed u Jen Murray, been too busy to go scrolling for content. But this reaction gave me pause; as I regard the double feature of Ilia Salkind produced Superman I & II are by far the best epic superhero movies ever put on the silver screen. Broadway stage play style flight effects and PG level violence for not overly super fighting is a lot less hard on the eyes & and more fun/entertaining in its simplicity of actors just acting out scenes instead heavily overlaid CGI like in the newer DC hero flicks. This is the film that set the standard for all comic book hero adaptations in blockbuster releases AND the actor Christopher Reeve is at the heart of why I love him as my Superman forever. He is so captivating in his portrayal for most people who see the movie to love it for how perfect a hero that Reeve played this role. Masterfully done. Even little kids love these movies after pointing out the 70s era cinematography. You will certainly appreciate this great work of untraditional live action cinema ALMOST ALL directed on a Broadway sound stage.

What I love about Reeve, is that he changes character between Clark and Superman. His stance, gait, speech, mannerisms, everything. Evident in the glasses scene on his date with Lois after he'd flow her around as Superman. Reeve was also responsible for Superman's first flight at the end of the Fortress Of Solitude scene. The director and stunt crew simply couldn't figure out how to make it look good enough, and Reeve apparently said to hoist him up and swing him across the set as they'd already practiced. Reeve then banked his body to the left, and used his arms and legs as counterweights to make him swing outwards in a curve and past the camera. Hey presto, the Superman flyby shot was born and the way Superman flies was cemented into canon.

Reeve's ability to communicate utterly un-selfconscious sincerity is almost as big a part of making this character work as his bodywork. If they'd made the Barbie movie back in 1978 or whenever, Reeve would have been a dream-casting as a Ken.

One of Superman's two creators (writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster), was actually born and raised in Canada (in Toronto), at least until he was a teenager -- Joe Shuster later moved with his parents to Cleveland, Ohio where he met Jerry Siegel, and the rest is history.

Traditionally, according to the comic books, Superman would change into his Superman suit in an enclosed telephone booth. By 1978, when the film came out, however, telephones were on small wall-less kiosks on poles. That's why, when he is first changing into Superman in the helicopter scene where he has to rescue Lois Lane, Clark does a double take when he looks at the phone. The scene was just a humorous homage to the Superman comics and films from the 1940's.
@bobbuethe1477
@bobbuethe1477 Год назад
I don't know how the phone booth thing became a cliché. Superman changed clothes in a phone booth in one of the 1940 animated cartoons, and maybe 3 times in the first 30 years of Superman comic books. But somehow, everyone thinks he did it all the time.

Interesting note, people often question the glasses part, how does no one recognize him? If you notice his voice, posture, the way he walks, everything changes, the one problem with Henry Cavill is he does not get the Clark part down as well. Also, Reeves got in great shape for the role, but he did not get very bulky as, if your strength is from being an alien, why would you be huge?
@Andy2481

Lets face it the script in Man of Steel was average at best. I dont really blame Henry Cavill for the way he portrays clark kent. I could see him pull off that geeky glasses type, he is a good actor I just feel the writing isnt there for him and direction as a lot of people feel Zack Synder is kinda over rated.

Superman was the first REAL superhero. A mint condition copy of the first Superman comic sold at auction for $25,000. Superman is Jerry Seinfeld's hero on his TV show. The comic and the TV show so many years ago long ago had such a deep effect that every time I someone wearing the T-Shirt thrills me ! That was an eternal prison yes. The logo that looks like the letter "S" was a family crest. The super advanced Krypton science uses those crystal included in the ship allowed interactive talks with his deceased father. Superman had super speed, super strength, super hearing, was invulnerable, microscopic vision, X-Ray vision which could also be used as heat vision. AND he can fly!

The guys that co-created "Superman" weren't expecting their character to be in a universe with Santa Claus, Wonder Woman, and other Mystical Beings. Ditto for the creators of "Batman"! Both teams had Science Fiction in mind inspired by real Science. However, in a Fantasy setting in which Magic is a given, to compromise as an of acknowledgement that "Wonder Woman" exists too, he suddenly has to have it listed as one of his "Vulnerabilities" as you would see on his official RPG character card. 😀

Nice to see a reaction to this classic, there aren't many of them. Superman 2 is very much worth watching. As others have stated, the theatrical cut will make for a better first viewing. The alternate "Donner Cut" of Superman 2 is interesting but due to some clunky editing and re-used footage, it doesn't work well as a direct sequel. It functions much better as a supplement to the more complete theatrical version.

I think I like Superman more now than I did when I was an 8 year old. I miss Chistopher Reeve. At my current age, I notice different things. How sweet he was, charming, handsome. What a good actor he was. Like a contemporary Cary Grant. When I was 8 I don't know that I thought much of anything!!! :) :). Now all Supermen have to be neurotic and edgy. Reeve played it the right way. He is my favorite now of all the Superhero actors by a lot!!!! He really WAS superman. I'm obsessed with Christopher Reeve. I'd like to watch both 1 and 2 again and some of his post superman movies as well. He was a fine actor. What this film does, that taught all other super hero films to come after, was to ground the film with little moments of banter and humorous dialogue giving the characters far more depth and provide relief from the otherwise grim and purely action driven plot. It also showed that a comic book could be adapted to a dramatic film much easier than people had imagined. If you treat the subject seriously the audience will too. The TV show Batman with Adam West was truly the only frame of reference Hollywood producers had for a live action portrayal of a super hero and had no idea if audiences would accept a dramatic interpretation of a guy in tights and a cape.

As a fellow Canadian, I hope you enjoyed seeing rural Alberta stand in for Smallville Kansas, and Calgary for some of the Metropolis scenes. This continues through Superman II and III. Also, although it is often omitted by American biographers, Superman co-creator Joe Shuster was born in Toronto and wouldn't immigrate to the United States with his family until he was the age of 10. So Superman himself, has some good Canadian lineage as well. No wonder he is so polite and ernest. Furthermore, the series Smallville and current Superman & Lois shows were also shot in Canada. As for Margot Kidder? Lois Lane herself? Also Canadian.

Superman: The Movie is the single greatest superhero film of all time. Both Kevin Feige who runs the entire MCU and Bryan Singer who directed X-Men & Superman Returns worked for Richard Donner who directed Superman, and credit this movie with being the standard that they have chased for their whole careers. Feige even stated publicly that they watch it before making every Marvel movie. Christopher Nolan also said that he patterned the structure and pacing of Batman Begins after Superman: The Movie. Comic book movies would not have grown into the blockbusters they are today if this movie did not exist. It paved the way for everything after it. Christopher Reeve is an absolute legend in this role and nobody will ever be able to compare to his dual portrayals of both Clark Kent and Superman. David Prowse who was the man in the Darth Vader suit in all 3 original Star Wars movies was an ex bodybuilder and personally trained Reeve for the role of Superman, helping him add nearly 30 pounds of muscle onto his 6'4" frame! Reeve was also a trained glider pilot and performed his own flying often suspended on cables from a crane as high as 50 feet in the air. This movie and everyone involved in it was the real deal. Thank you for reacting to this movie. It is one of my favorite films ever made. Hope to see you stick with the series.

It was nice to see someone who doesn't know Superman lore watching this because it does a great job conveying all of the important information. Some of us consider this to be THE Superman film to be the best, especially if you watch it with the Richard Donner Director's Cut version of Superman II. I saw this as a sneak preview and again when it opened in the theaters. The version you watched has an abbreviated version of Superman entering Luthor's lair. The full sequence has Lex try to kill Superman as he walks down the entrance tunnel with machine guns, flame throwers and by freezing him. It is between two of the death traps, I forget if it was 1&2 or 2&3, that Otis says "I think he's coming Mr. Luthor" and only after the freezing, when they think for a moment that they succeeded, that Superman arrives at the door.

Technically there are five Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. Four were released theatrically, and a second version of Superman 2 was released on home video. The reason there's two versions of Superman 2 is because during filming they fired the original director, but years later he went back and finished the movie the way he wanted it using screen tests, and scenes that they originally shot that weren't used in the theatrical version.

This was such a treat! Superman is my 3rd favorite movie of all time (right after Rocky and Back to the Future). I was 3 years old when Superman came out, yet I have a memory of going to the theater and my dad really wanting to see Superman, so my mom and dad went to see that and my grandmother took me to see Disney's Pinocchio which had been re-released to theaters at that time and I really wanted to see that. Because it was a lot shorter, Pinocchio finished first and I remember going into the theater showing Superman to find my dad and tell him we would be in the lobby when his movie was over. Funny how some memories just stick with you. About 4 years later Superman was going to be shown for the first time on network TV and ABC wanted to make it an event so they added a whole bunch of deleted scenes to make the movie 4 hours long (with commercials) and showed it over 2 nights. The point where Lois completely falls out of the helicopter but before Superman catches her is where part 1 stops on a freeze frame and you get told to "tune in tomorrow for the conclusion". We had a Betamax vcr at the time and we recorded both parts on 2 different tapes. I watched that movie over and over and over so many times as a kid. Only, back then I found the Krypton scene to go on way too long and most of the origin stuff in part 1 to be boring so I ended up mostly just watching the second tape that started at the good part as far as I was concerned. I also hated the credits, how they just go on and on, and was happy I could fast forward through them. Now though, I love the first part of the film! Some of my favorite scenes are there. And I love the credits! The way they come across the screen in 3D with John Williams' amazing score playing...it's a wonderful experience to take it all in. Also, as I got older I began to catch Superman on cable or I'd rent the VHS after our Betamax was no longer hooked up. It perplexed and vexed me that scenes I absolutely remembered were cut out of these versions. I didn't realize until years later that it was because the version I grew up watching was the edited for television version with all the extra scenes and footage added. For example, sometimes it was footage that just added to a scene like when teenage Clark was running faster than the train, the little girl that sees him out the window is Lois Lane as a child. Not only that, but the actress playing her mother was Noel Neil who played Lois Lane in the George Reeves Superman TV series from the 50's. Other times it was completely cut bits from the story. Like Lex Luthor kept some kind of pets in a pit in his lair. Lex would order Otis to "feed the babies" and Otis would plead with Luthor not to have to do it, that it was Miss Tessmacher's turn but Lex made him do it. You never saw the animals but you heard growls that sounded like it could be lions or tigers or something like that and they would completely devour in seconds the raw meat Otis would lower down to them. Then at the end of the movie, after Superman saves everyone from the missiles, the earthquake, and had spun himself around the Earth into a time warp to save Lois Lane...Lex has Miss Tessmacher tied up and ready to lower to "the babies" because he knows it was her that freed Superman from the Kryptonite. Lex has Otis lowering her down while he plays "You must have been a beautiful baby" on piano. Otis is crying and blubbering but doing what he's told. But then Superman crashes in, saves Miss Tessmacher and grabs Lex and Otis to bring them to that prison. Eventually I hooked the old Betamax back up to transfer a lot of those old tapes to VHS, then in the 2000's I transferred a bunch of the VHS tapes to DVD. That 1982 recording of Superman made it through all the transfers and I still have it, I'm pleased to say. They filmed Superman 1 and 2 mostly simultaneously, the three Kryptonians in the beginning are being set up for the sequel. The leader of the criminals is General Zod and the mirror prison thing Jor-El put them in is the Phamtom Zone. During filming the closer they got to the release date the more of a concern having the first film finished became, so Richard Donner concentrated on completing Superman 1 as time became a constraint. Then Donner had a falling out with the producers and was replaced by Richard Lester as director for Superman II. However, Donner had already filmed close to 80% of Superman II and there is a rule that for a director to be credited as the director of a movie he has to have shot at least 51% of the movie. So new scenes were written for Lester to shoot as he completed the movie and when Superman II was theatrically released it was 51% the new scenes written plus the remaining scenes Donner hadn't completed all directed by Lester and 49% Donner's footage. Then in the early 2000's Warner Bros. allowed Donner and assistants to release a Donner Cut of Superman II. Because so much time had passed, the actors had aged, and Christopher Reeve had then had his accident that paralyzed him, it was impossible to shoot the remaining footage they needed to finish Donner's version. So they used test footage and some of Lester's footage when they had to and did the best they could to get the movie as close as they could to the way Donner had originally envisioned he wanted Superman II to look. Now I like both versions Superman II a lot, but I like The Donner Cut the most by far. However, my recommendation for anyone who has never seen any version of Superman II is to watch the theatrical version first. That way you will have seen the completely finished, polished, and produced film first. Then after you've given given yourself some time to digest the movie, go and watch The Donner Cut and that way you'll get the best idea of what they were trying to do. But whatever version you decide to watch, I highly highly recommend watching Superman II. It's a bit more silly and corny and nonsensical, but there are some really great things in it too! Superman III, I have a controversial opinion on...I love it! Not nearly as much as the first two, but I still love it. A couple of my favorite Superman moments of the entire franchise are in this movie. The thing is...they, or Richard Lester rather, who was back to direct, made it into a comedy... actually it is really like they made two movies...a Superman movie and a comedy movie starring Richard Pryor and then smashed them together. But I say if you can put yourself in the mindset that this movie is trying to be a whacky comedy and just go with it, it can be a lot of fun. Supergirl is a terrible movie that makes no sense but I personally still like it. It's a guilty pleasure for me. The best part of the movie is the music. Jerry Goldsmith this time is doing the score and he does almost as wonderful a job for Supergirl as John Williams did for Superman. Mainly I like this movie for the music and because it shares continuity with the Christopher Reeve films. But it really is a bad movie. If you decide to watch it don't go in expecting it to be anything else. _Sigh_ Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is absolutely the bottom of the barrel. It is terrible! But guess what? I still like it. I've been in love with seeing Christopher Reeve as Superman almost all my life. This was his last time in the suit and I can't not like any performance of Reeve as Superman. No matter what, it feels like a privilege to see him in the role. But the movie itself is horrendous. Sorry for the long comment, I have a lot of history with this movie. Best Regards!

For me Christopher Reeve is the best Superman. Most super heroes are the alter-ego of a normal person. For example, Batman was Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego. It’s the other way around for Superman. Clarke Kent was Superman pretending to be someone else. And Reeve really gets this. I love his Clarke Kent as much as I love his Superman.

@jen murray - yes, the san andreas fault is very real. It extends all the way up into British Columbia, Canada.. its is the reason for the devastating earthquakes in california and the state will eventually collapse and fall away in the future. We just dont know when. Trivia: - Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) is a Canadian. She beat out multiple other A-list actresses for the role including Stockard Channing, and Holly Palance. - The native american in the car with her is actually one of the directors/producers of the movie.. he is not native american and today that would be brownfacing. The things you could get away with back then. lol - the guy commanding the army truck moving the missile was Larry Linville, also known as Frank Burns on M*A*S*H. - Valerie Perrine (Miss Tessmacher) was a former playboy model and currently suffers from MS and has become completely unrecognizable from her former self. - Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor) always always had a moustache in his movies up until this one. The director Richard Donner tricked him into shaving it off.. lol

19:11 "I like his muscles." You know, Christopher Reeve had the option to wear a suit with padded-foam muscles built in, but he thought that would cheapen the cinematic viewing experience, so he made it a point to follow a good weight-lifting routine during this movie's filming. Those are his _real_ muscles.

Christopher Reeve really 'gets' Superman and in the old days, comics were less dark so he wasn't like modern portrayals. I Like Henry, but all things considered, Christopher I think portrays the character and ideals of Super Man best. But that's not Henry Cavill's fault. Its the storytelling, directing... etc.

Bullshit. Man Of Steel poses the question: can Superman, let alone superheroism, exist in a post-September 11 world? Not the Chris Reeve version because you have 24-hour news, social media, the Internet and talking heads who question the existence of a person who can do what Superman does. Superman 78 came out at a time when the news media wasn't as big as today and people were tired of Vietnam, Watergate, civil unrest, racism, environmental pollution, raising gas prices and wanted to escape from those social problems. There's nothing wrong with escapism, but you have to balance it out with practicalism.

Watching Christopher Reeves in the cape is always bittersweet for me. He was such wonderfully athletic man, and the tragic accident that tied him to a wheelchair was especially painful for his family and his fans. Even from that chair, he was a true hero - starting a foundation for spinal research and advocating for people with disabilities. The Superman franchise is full of fun and interesting content. I strongly recommend Superman 2, and the Man of Steel movies, but I also recommend the highly underrated Superman Returns with Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth. Kevin Spacey was a wonderfully evil Lex Luthor in that one, and if you pay attention, you'll see a cameo by Richard Branson. The Superman TV franchise was also a lot of fun. If you find the time, you should check out Smallville and Lois and Clark. They were both popular shows at the time.

One of the defining characteristics of Superman is how much he hides his powers and abilities as Clark Kent. Honestly that was a pretty common comic book trope for decades, but I think what colors modern movie viewer's perspective is how nowadays, comic book movies usually revel in the acquisition of powers, usually have a scene where the main character does all the cool things he or she always wanted to do if they could, or they take it a step further and just have them be a public superhero like Ironman who doesn't have to hide anything. But with Superman especially, the idea of hiding his powers is almost the most defining aspect of his character. His character isn't about wish fulfillment or a power fantasy. It's about, if you know you have abilities above most people, then it's about the responsibility of using them for good causes. Not personal gain. The closest parallel would be Spiderman in the MCU, but without as heavy a guilt backstory (though his Pa dying after talking to him about responsibility had a huge effect for sure).

8:14 Superman’s greatest fear was to be apprehended like a lab rat and experimented on because he’s extra terrestrial!! this was also a fear of both Johnathan and Martha Kent!! the Smallville series explores this a lot more, which is very interesting, but in short that’s why the Kent’s disallowed Clark to participate in any school sports in fear that he may exhibit his super-speed or super strength

Re: Lois Lane being buried, look up videos on Rattlesnake Ridge, near Yakima, WA. It has the sobering, real life potential for a MASSIVE car/people-burying disaster. 20 acres of land above I-5 ( I think it is) have been slowly separating & sliding apart. The footage of the cracks above & the proverbial ant-sized semis below is sobering. I don't know why they aren't already designing & building an alternate route, to be honest. Sure, it's slowed down, but it can only be a matter of time.

I still say out of all the Superman actors, Reeve is the only one who makes it almost seem reasonable that people wouldn't recognize he's the same person. We all know that that part of the Superman lore is something we all just decide to overlook, because in both identities he hangs around with the same people. And for Lois not to notice? BUT with Reeve he plays it so differently it almost is excusable. I feel like no other actor really even tries to be very different.

Christopher Reeve (Superman) broke his neck in a horse riding accident in 1995 and died nine years later. Many consider him the best Superman. I suggest Man of Steel and on HBO Max, the first season of Superman and Lois, which shows them married with twins, another great and realistic Superman.

Superman II is interesting as there are two different versions of the movie. The theatrical cut which had many scenes reshot by Richard Lester, and the Donner cut which came out in the mid 2000s. I do think i prefer the Donner cut, but to be honest i think the best version of the movie would actually be a combination of the two. If you want to watch the second one, i'd start with the theatrical cut. Then maybe come back to the Donner cut at a later date so you can see the differences.

Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. They met in high school in Ohio. Superman is a mix of religious allegory and pulp entertainment. He was born on Planet Kryton and raised by a couple in Kansas. He works at the Daily Planet newspaper. He uses the alter ego Clark Kent. The Phantom Zone is a prison used on Krypton. General Zod is a rogue officer who tried to take over Krypton. The Ruby Spears Superman(1988) cartoon was really good, but it got the axe after 13 episodes. Mighty Mouse poked fun of the cliches in Superman's world. Kryptonite is a radioactive rock that drains Superman's super powers.

I am Supes excited for this review... yeah i did 😉 It is so awesome to see someone getting introduced to Superman lore from the beginning. The effects in a lot of the flying sequences are still better than a lot of the CGI crap out there. Man this was fun watching you watch the movie and learn about his back story from scratch.
