ikr? it gets really annoying. the fact that you have to put in the extra effort in order to understand the music is one of my favorite parts of this song,
SugarSpiceSatan ## If it was Rick Ross and beyonce it could have made sense to people. This is the exact reason he wrote this song, there is no way you can please everyone but before people mess you up please make your self happy.
and that's exactly why Adam did a cover. People/fans complained his early work was too spacey and left-field, but when he released his more grounded, "normal" pop-inspired album, everyone still complained. He realized he just can't win if he tries to do every little thing to please anyone that isn't himself.
Maybe we don't know, but he relased this cover before "The Midsummer Station". And for me, I'll never complain about his music as I'm so thanksfull for all the amazing songs he has made & for which I'll never be able to thanks him enough. And also as a producer I would hate people complaining about songs I've worked on hours and hours !
I LOVE this song. When I'm sad, it makes me feel so much better. You know, the cool thing is that I was getting bored and kind of tired of his old songs. They're still amazing, but they just weren't as amazing as before to me. And then he comes out with THIS stuff. This is pretty much why I'm an owl city citizen.
He often gets slammed for his music and things he sings about. The line, "You can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself," becomes very powerful.
They are, if you don't know the story behind it. This song was written by Ricky Nelson, who got his start as a Teen Heartthrob. Eventually Rick decided he was tired of simply singing vapid love songs and stopped touring to focus on artistic discovery. In 1971 there was a Rock 'n Roll revival concert at Madison Square Garden that RIcky was invited to, so he went, but he realized much of his fame was that of a teenage idol, no one cared about him as a normal adult. Thus, he wrote this song.
"You see, you can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself." This is a huge problem I have. I never tell people what I really want because I don't want to make anyone else mad or upset in any way.
@@sankarii.21 I made this comment two years ago and I can truthfully say that while I do still struggle with this, I've gotten better. I've learned that there are times to do whats best for you, but there are also times to do whats best for others. Its a difficult balance that's hard to work out. I'm still working on it, most people are. My heart goes out to you, and I hope you're able to find the right balance for you. It does get easier. Just don't lose yourself to make others happy 💛 Have a good night/day, stranger
Its a song by Rick Nelson. Its about a show he played Madison Square garden when he played new songs and he got booed off stage. He makes references to other bands that we there (ex. Yoko Ono brought her Walrus (John Lennon)). After the show he decided to do what he wanted instead of what everyone else wanted which in other words is: You can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself.
I support Adam Young 100% percent! If all he sang were memories, it wouldnt be very fun. Any kind of music he makes will not change the fact that he is an extremely talented person!
Adam Young has an impeccable taste for music to cover. And he knows just how to tweak around the music a bit. Just one of the many beautiful musicians out there, but also special in every way. ^^
It's not coincidence that he releases this song at a time where Owl City fans are critizing Adam for a change in style of his music. I for one enjoy just about everything done by this guy!
Dear Adam! My name is Nadia, and i'm from Russia. I have been listening to your songs since 2013 i think. I can't describe what i feel when im listening to you. You make me feel happy and sad and feel that im not alone in the world, theres always hope, peace and joy in every your song. Thank you so so so much for your creativity. Every piece of every song is so beautiful and it touches every piece of my soul. I believe the language of music international no matter what country you live in and what nationality you are.
Why are OC's songs so unorganised? This is the umpteenth time I found a song I haven't heard before despite going off of his Wiki, iTunes, Spotify etc.
Well, this technically isn't Owl City. This is just Adam Young covering songs. But yeah, someone's gotta make a list of these, I keep finding new ones and it leaves me wondering, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you know...
Owl city song is a blessing to my life.... It has the most peaceful vibe that it make ls me happy in the middle of sadness.... Thank you so much owl city....God Bless you
I really admire Adam Young for doing this, because he basically is stating that he KNOWS that not everyone will be happy with his newer songs. Its a new sound. But it makes HIM happy, so a few so-called fans who can't accept that he's GROWING in his music aren't going to stop him. I for one, will be a loyal fan and follow this genius of a man through it. :) //end rant//
I wonder if people know this song's about one of the most famous concerts that ever happened in Madison Square Garden with many different artists and bands, hence "Garden Party"
Rick Nelson was a Rock N Roll Star of the 1950s and did a TV sitcom with his real life family. He went to Madison Square Garden and everyone wanted him to just sing the oldies but he wanted to show off the new stuff.
I like to think that this song also means that people who came and went into your life were for a purpose, and if you try to go back you’ll see it will never be the same.
Nice job describing it! i remember when i was curious about it when i first listened to this. I looked it up and BAM! that was a great way to put it.... maybe even better than the dictionary's definition
Thanks for making the video. The song was great on it's own, but the pictures and lyrics made it great to watch :D Thank God for Adam's Amazing voice and skills! :)
I went to a garden party to Reminisce with my old friends A chance to share old memories And play our songs again When I got to the garden party They knew my name but no one recognized me I didn't look the same But it’s alright now I learned my lesson well You see, you can’t please everyone So you gotta please yourself People came from miles around And everyone was there Yoko brought her walrus There was magic in the air And over in the corner, much to my surprise Mr hughes hid in Dylan’s shoes Wearing his disguise But it’s alright now I learned my lesson well You see, you can’t please everyone So you gotta please yourself I played them all the old songs I thought that’s why they came But no one heard the music We didn’t look the same I said "Hello" to Mary Lou, she belongs to me And when I sang a song about a Honky Tonk It was time to leave But it’s alright now I learned my lesson well You see, you can’t please everyone So you gotta please yourself Someone opened up a closet door and Out stepped Johnny B good Playin' guitar like ringin' a bell And looking like he should If you gotta play at garden parties I wish you a lot of luck But if memories were all I sang I’d rather drive a truck But it’s alright now I learned my lesson well You see, you can’t please everyone So you gotta please yourself You can’t please everyone So you gotta please yourself
The Garden Party was a party at Madison Square Garden. And all the people (and walruses) he mentioned in this song are based on real people at the party. Just thought I'd let you know. I got all that from his blog.
Amen. Ultraviolet was worlds better than TMS, but something is honestly still lacking. I miss the stripped down synths and the soft, almost whispery vocals. The beats are a bit too heavy these days.
Shush.....he's trying a new experiment. He wants to see if he can put the "magic" into pop. Obivously, he sadly can't. So he may or may not go back to the beauty that is "old" Owl City. :P
I think he should sing this to every 'Owl City fan' complaining about how they hate the 'new Adam'. He's just making himself happy guys. Stop judging him.
Ricky Nelson wrote this song when supposedly got booed off the stage by the crowd in a concert in Madison Square Garden. He played his old songs but nobody recognized him. I guess after he got booed off Chuck Berry(Johnny B' Good) came out and took over. The concert was full of famous musicians. "Hello Mary Lou" and "She Belongs to Me" are some songs he refers to.
What no I'm not crying its just... This song reminds me of my gramma because she told me those exact words when I hear this song I just start tearing up in the fond memories =,)
Yeah you should check it out ... it's awesome :) and it makes perfect sense too coz he talks about the others who were at the garden party too, his friends etc :)
