Be sure to leave your coat tips and tricks for mobility aid users. This is (nearly) my entire coat collection that has been developed over many years! I feel investing in a good coat is better thank buying into fast fashion. They last longer, so better on the environment, and tend to be better quality so keep you warm, and dry.

I have more coats and jackets than you - and I hardly go anywhere! 😋 You can get winter jackets tjat have a lower hem at the back than in the front. Also, you can get jackets with warming packs that work off a battery. Also, that sleeveless jacket is called "a bodywarmer" in my 'hood... 😉 And WHY did we not see you in the "spesh" rain poncho?!?!? 🤦

I have found coats designed for horse riders the best for me as they are available in standard and long length but by both hips there are zips that you can unzip so that the coat sides split into a front and back piece and doesn’t bundle around your stomach, they are perfect for any position wether standing, parariding or sitting.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention your wheelguards tbh, I don’t have them on my chair yet and I think that’s the biggest issue I have with jackets and long shirts, as they all get tangled up in my wheels!!

I always wear longer coats and snowboarding jackets as it helps stopping that freezing draft on your lower back, which can leave you bone cold (that type of cold just can’t get warm from). I also add an extra layer of water proofing spray on coats/jackets to reinforce it. The worse part about getting stuck in the rain is that all the rain pools in your lap so it can look like you’ve wet yourself 🤦🏼‍♀️ You timed this post perfectly with yet another storm about to hit the uk👌🏻Have you any tips for keeping your hands clean and warm🤗🥰🤗check out www.kinetic-balance.com their rain deck is 👌🏻🤗🥰🤗

I have Erythromelalgia, also called "Man on Fire", so coats are the last thing I want to wear. I wear sleeveless shirts and shorts year round, plus I am fat so that keeps me pretty warm too. I do have a lightweight vest that I wear when it is icy out. I suppose if I were 40 pounds lighter I might need a coat.

I am so glad you do videos on wheelchair fashion that able bodied people can understand. I was actually delighted yesterday because my aunt sent me a package and inside was a pair of joggers that don't ride up or down when you are seated, and they are so warm and comfy. I was so thankful! People have no idea how hard it is to find something that fits well and doesn't snag on wheelchair parts.

In Alaska, it's more function over form and style kind of goes out the window when you're trying not to freeze to death! However, I'm a coat junkie and have a few favorites. My favorite company is probably Columbia. They have this lining they called Omni Heat that looks sort of like foil, but what it does is reflect your body heat and keep it inside. This allows these jackets to be very thin. I used that as a base layer. I have pants/trousers that are for skiing and they zip up the sides (which makes them easier to get on and off), also made by Columbia. They are amazingly warm and keep my legs nice and toasty. When it's really cold out, I have a heavy Alaskan parka, which does have a fur ruff because almost all coats up here have one to keep arctic winds out of your face and still stay warm. It gets -40C or colder so true Alaska parkas are a must. I recently became aware of a company that makes coats specifically for wheelchair users. They are shorter in the front, longer in the back, and have sleeve guards to keep your sleeves from getting dirty while you're wheeling. The company is Kinetic Balance, which is in the Netherlands, and I can't wait to get a few of their things. I'll be all ready to go come next winter!

Canadian winters can be rather harsh too. I loved my parka for the frigid windchill days. Do you have any tips for gloves (warm yet still able to grip the handrims)? Also, how do you keep your sleeves clean?

Try rubbing a candle over the zipper once it's closed, it helps it slide easier when closing/opening. That's what my grandma did to my coats when I was a kid.

I think the biggest take-away here is to have wheelguards so the bottom of whatever you’re wearing doesn’t get stuck in the wheels.

TJ Maxx was founded in 1976 in Framingham, Massachusetts, United States of America . But the first international store was opened in Bristol ,UK in 1994. The Company modified the name to TK Maxx to avoid confusion with the established British retail chain T. J. Hughes ( which is not affiliated with TJX) ... I hope this helps clear up the confusion.🇺🇸👩🏼‍🦽❤️

See, I love leather jackets. My problem is that the inner forearms rub against my armrests and hand rims, and so start to slowly shred over time. I once had a friend take my leather jacket home by mistake and, still not realizing it wasn’t his, saw that the sleeves were “all of a sudden worn out” and threw it away!

I like gilets and sleeveless coats, I hate anything that restricts my arms or is tight around my upper arms, I need a weatherproof jacket for when I use my crutches because of the inability to carry an umbrella issue. Do you ever use waterproof trousers if the weather is really bad?

Thank you for this video. It is summertime as I type this and I am awaiting delivery of my first wheelchair. I am fortunate enough to be able to stand for short periods but I had never considered many of the other concerns you touched on. I really never though about my leather jacket being restrictive. Yikes! Although it is a swing coat so it comes down to my upper thighs it is very heavy and stiff. Since I make many of my clothes I will be learning to adapt the fit as well. Please let me know if there is anything I should look out for in that regard. Thank you.

Thank you 🙂 When I started using a wheelchair, I started buying jackets for horse riding. Nine of my longer parka length coats worked at all! But riding jackets are light, pre shaped for sitting and works really really well! I have both a thin waterproof jacket summer/autumn/spring (sometimes with a woolen sweaters under). This also has like 10 cm zippers over your butt/hips that opens so it works even better when sitting 👍 and during winter I have a winter jacket for riding. 🙂 Could also add that I live in Sweden, so it gets quite cold here from time to time...

I have ruined many, many coats as I don’t have enough eyesight to drive, so I have to push myself in my wheelchair to get anywhere. I’m 5’ 2” so the coat sleeves are always to long, and they get destroyed from going too fast downhill while I’m self propelling. My favourite coat just now is by ‘Jack Wolf skin’, it’s waterproof, and has the double zip, a great adjustable hood that cradles your head, and down insulation in the body part (which is the best thing for keeping toasty warm, but is useless when wet because it losers all it’s little air pockets). The insulation in the sleeves is synthetic and keeps on working to keep you warm if your sleeves get wet, as it doesn’t soak up the water the same, and so still has air pockets to keep you warm. (...and if you self propel on a wet floor or in the rain you’re going to get rising damp up your sleeves!). It waterproof, and covers your bum too! The sleeves have the double ‘powder snow’ cuffs and Velcro to fasten them around your wrists. (Not sponsored, but I really love this coat, I’ve been through so many rubbish -and expensive- coats!) ... and to keep my legs warm, ... I use one of those cosy-toes, waterproof, fleece lined, half sleeping bag things. They look awful but are so warm and dry I don’t care anymore! (and instead of shoes you can put two pairs of your warmest, comfiest, fluffiest, bed socks on!) I love your videos Gem, can you do some vlog-y ordinary day-in-the-life type ones?

Love this. Coats are just a nightmare. I've my bestie coat. I get sad when spring comes along and I have wait for autumn to return. It has soft lush material on out side. Body part is thermal ribbed inside with soft fluffy material leading to arms. The arms are lined with the fluffy stuff. So is hood. And the added fluffy hood. Faux fur around hood. Same cuff type you showed in one of your Coates. Cuff under the sleave. Brilliant. Bonus. You zip it up. Get comfy. Both sides have 6inch zips. So you can pull coat down. For me its mid thigh. Get comfy with coat under mum. Then pull side zips down to fit neatly. No lower front zip though. I also have water/ proof fold away pink coat for rest of year.... Plus beloved fleece. How do you cope with wheels leaving marks on sleeves?

I have got a really long waxed green coat with the Fryer Tuck cape on the shoulders. Country and shooting style.? Double ended and comes down to where my boots stop. Got it huge so I could have room etc. It even has a pleat in the back so the velcro can be opened for further room. Draw back with it being long best to get on before transfer or you will have a lot of jiggling the coat down. The sleeveless thing is a Geeeeeeelaaaaay in my part of England not a Gillet. But then ‘sachet’ most of my family, except for me say SaChet???? Love your vlogs. Our pickapacs are still going strong after 2 year.

I usually love to wear a wintersport/ski coat, as they are wind and water proof and nice and warm. Also if you have a little spare money, take a look at kinetic balance (it’s a dutch brand designed by and for wheelchair users, but they ship worldwide): www.kinetic-balance.com/ they have coats (but also pants, pullovers and more) specially designed for wheelchair users.. I love my leg warmer and rain deck from them and saving money for a coat and pants from them. It’s so much nicer (the coats have extra strength at the sleeves, as that part always gets dirty from the wheels and is breaking/tearing faster because of my wheels) and the pockets are at a really nice place even when guy are sitting all the time 😊 Because it is designed specially for wheelchair users, you don’t have the backing up/ruche at the front, but the back is longer so you won’t have a cold back.

As a new chair user, getting into a heavy winter coat involves moves that would confound a contortionist (it snows a LOT where I live.) You have a Barbour coat! Royal Warrant! Wheeew! Livin’ it up there M’Lady! (Seriously- really nice but super pricey here in US.) BTW....if you want the world’s best, truly foul-weather raincoat, check out the coats by American manufacturer Simms. Nothing is getting through a Simms. Like Barbour, very pricey but worth it. One will last a lifetime. Cheers and keep your great vids coming please.

I have PU leather flight jackets. Not too long, not too short and it being PU (or fake leather) means it's much lighter, more subtle and more waterproof, the one I have is also quite warm so if you want a leather style jacket but not the weight and stiffness look into the PU style (*cough aliexpress cough*) I further have a WWII style tanker jacket, which again not too long, not too short, has a wool liner but isn't waterproof, but a simple rain jacket for a couple of bucks solves that problem (living in the Netherlands a rain jacket is a standard item in the backpack) For real winter I have a parka that has a detachable fleece jacket (I LOVE multipurpose items) Over the legs I have a raincover from Reha design (look them up) but if it's really cold, rainy and/or windy (as the past weeks have been) I wear either a thermal or jogging trousers under snow trousers, add the parka, toque and gloves (someone really has to invent gloves that are warm, waterproof AND give grip) and am set Bonus tip that I learned the hard way: wear a ball cap when it rains, it keeps the rain out of your eyes

I avoid wearing coats as much as I can because they’re just too big and bulky. I’m at home the majority of the time anyway. Unfortunately I am unable to transfer in and out of a car independently so again I choose not to wear them because it’s just more work for whoever is assisting me with transferring. It’s a shame because I have a really nice parka coat with toggle type fastenings lol.

Do you think a gilet would be a good option?

I live in a cold climate and I generally hate wearing coats. I'm an occasional wheelchair user, and whether I'm in my chair or not, I prefer wearing a fleece pullover or something similar ...and then I just avoid spending too much time outside.😂

All my coats were long. It's been 3 years and I still can't find a coat that doesn't ride up above my boobs when I push :( I find button ups help with the bulge around the middle as I can undo the bottom buttons but then I move and they instantly ride up. I also have broad shoulders so coats are always restrictive. I just have to wear a jumper and thermal long sleeve shirt and deal with the cold. Luckily it only gets to about -3°C here.

Those first two jackets looked stunning on you 😍 Hearing the things you look for in coats makes me think that maybe horse riding coats would be worth looking into (not the fancy blazers but proper coats that you wear in the rain and stuff). I don't have a disability, but I do, do horse riding and I also get very cold very quick and I struggle to get warm afterwards. They can sometimes be pricy, and they aren't the most flattering shape wise, but a good horse riding coat is normalky hot, water proof, has a hood and a double zip, as well as some pretty decent pockets 😉 And arm movement isn't normally restricted because they're built for sport or mucking out.

The belt in the ski jacket is to hold the snow ❄ out if you fall when you are skiing 🎿 or snowboarding. And the arm thing is also so you don't get snow ❄ in. I love ❤ your videos. I think it's interesting to see what it's like to be in a wheelchair. Because I am not in a wheelchair. But I have scoliosis and dyslexia. So I know what I struggle with like I'm from Norway so it is difficult to right and speak in English. Ps. Sow if any of my sentences is wrong it's because of that.

Hi, sorry if I'm being stupid but I know that a lot of Barbour jackets can have a good attached to them, you have to buy them separately, don't know if your one has the studs on the back of the collar to attach one,if it has studs you're laughing.

I like gilets (I sound them out like you) in fact I have 3. If I have a coat I like it to be non restrictive and generally I get them a size too big otherwise I can’t push myself, I get really hot and don’t zip them up so then the front pieces get caught up in my wheels and it’s all a big situation!. I really struggle to find one I like so I wear layers with a hoody and gilet on top.

The word boobies makes me laugh for some reason. I have a shorter pink fluffy coat as I can use umbrella (powerchair perks lol). I also have a wheelchair rain coat one for my legs which I wear and like a poncho which I rarely wear as it looks weird. lol I also have a shorter thin waterproof. I don't have energy for long coats too much effort. lol The thin waterproof folds up and i hang it off my chair with my umbrella. 👏🏻

I hate being cold or wet so whether I’m in my chair or not I like to use my trespass or regatta costs which have removable fleece lining and heavy waterproof Rating with taped seams and wind proof if it’s really wet I have both ski trousers which keeps me warm and waterproof trousers hate hoods so I use a cap what I’m really struggling with is keeping my sleeves clean if I am self propelling any tips

I live in California and am so glad because I’m happy wearing only a fleece jacket or sweatshirt. The rare occasion when it rains I wear a light coat with a hood and I feel really confined and gross. Short waisted coats work best for me.

If you can, loop your top round your thumbs when you pop your arm in the sleeves so it doesnt get all squashed up inside. If you cant, you can use a paperclip attached to the top with an elastic band wrapped through the paperclip and round your thumb. Also kintsugiclothing.com have a great gillet cape thing designed with wheelchair users in mind

I was going to comment in your community tab where you recently asked about using the subtitles, that they're quite often wrong and mistake some words but no need anymore, the ones in this video are perfect! Thank you so much! 🥰

I love parkas style winter coats, or skiing coats or coats with wind stopper things in sleeves in general as it makes it easier to keep the coat sleeves out of the wheels when pushing. For me a coat has to have good sleeves that can be kept out of the wheels as much as possible, and the coat needs to allow me to move my arms freely and not be tight around the chest area. Coats are so difficult at times because I’m tall, have a wide bone structure and wide shoulders, so it’s all too common for me to find a coat that fits around me, but then has my arms feel like they’re in casts because of my broad shoulders. I can sometimes have a bit more luck with men’s coats as long as they look unisex.
