⚓️ NOMAD - Understanding Boat Plans 

I learned that method at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding but I did some digging for you and the only book in my collection that describes the same method is "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction" . Howard Chapelle covers a different approach in "Boatbuilding". S.S. Rabl in "Ship and Aircraft Fairing and Development" and Edwin Monk in "How to Build Wooden Boats" both show a fairly simple device you could build that can give you that information in a straight forward way. It's worth looking at one of the last two references because they do a good job of illustrating the the approach that all these methods are trying to achieve.

Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else trying to find out build your own boat free plans try Joolaim Rudder Replication (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my partner got excellent results with it.

There are many components to creating an amazing design. One resource I found which succeeds in merging these is the Denelle boat builder (google it if you're interested) definately the most incredible info that I've heard of. look at this amazing website.

Mark Wentland that's frosted mylar drafting film, which allows you to draw in pencil but I more often use clear mylar and markers.

Thank you Mark. I understand your fogginess regarding the bevel board. It really deserves its own video. The geometry governing how it works is pretty hard to visualize. I struggle to fully grasp it myself. I get there, then as time goes by I loose it and have to spend some time doing some mental back flips until I have it again. There are other methods you can employ. The bevel board is basically a protractor except you are only looking a slice through the radians. That slice is taken at a distance from the origin of the radians (center) that equals the spacing of the stations on your lofting. The width of that slice needs to equal the thickness of your planking and sometimes frames. Whichever you need to reduce your moulds by. So the bevel board can show you not only what the bevel of your mould or framing needs to be at any given point but also how much you need to reduce the size of the mould to accommodate that planking so that your finished product matches the lines in the lofting. You make a new one to suit each design you loft out. Some people loft to the inside of the planking which can eliminate the need for reductions. Not my preferred method because It creates other elements to confuse me. My wife already takes care of that job.

Mark Wentland sounds like you're loaded for bear then. I have stuffed a lot of wood through a Porter Cable tablesaw. I've owned two of them in fact. Do what you can to buy or create a Bessimeir style fence for it. The factory fences on those are horrible. I boosted one of mine up to 2HP as well. Play safe.

The best starting point would be to design a sail plan and work from there. The common method is to refer to other successful boats of a similar type and size to determine sail area and configuration. In some cases sail area is a determined as a ratio to wetted surface of the hull or cross section of midships. Of course in designing the sail plan, centre of effort of the sails relative to the center of lateral resistance of the hull is considered. With a sail plan in hand you can figure out the length of your spars and the potential forces upon it. From there you follow formulas that guide you in selecting mast materials and in turn the various relative diameters a mast or other spars must have along it's length. Of course the short answer is to again, steal those details from successful boats of similar size and type or start with accepted relative ratios. A very good reference book on this subject is Norman Skene's “Elements of Yacht Design”. I prefer the original publication over Francis Kinney's revised version but the core information is the same.

Great explanation, but I forgot to mention I was asking from a modelling perspective, not actually planning to build a real ship, most of the plans one can find through the internet only describe the hull, bowsprits and masts are broken/not represented, I was asking because I don't know if there is a way of figuring out the shape of each mast section and bowsprit... THANKS!!!!

Well That’s a little different. My best guess is that you would need to it compare to other vessels of the same size and era. If we are talking historic square rigged ships then it's a question of research. Books like “The Young Sea Officer’s Stream Anchor” - Lee Valley tools publication or “Masting and Rigging” Bridgecomb - Dover Publications can help with certain details. Historic paintings, drawings, models and modern reproductions are all sources of information. Learn how to work out scales and with dividers and vernier callipers. There are probably naval records that specify stuff like that. It’s all about digging for answers and educating yourself.

Well, most plans have a construction drawing showing the profile of the boat cut along the centerline, showing interior components. Any transom knee would be featured there. Not all plans have construction drawings though, and in that case you would be expecting to design the transom knee yourself. That said, some designs might not have a transom knee at all.

I'm sure you could but it would depend on your sheet metal working abilities and equipment.

There are numerous places depending on which specific plans you are interested in. Sometimes you can get them directly from the designer such as Paul Gartside or Angus Boats. Other sources are the Mystic Seaport Museum, Wooden Boat Magazine Store and Duckworks Magazine.
