It launches early today. Pick your self up a set of two of these crazy cool dice!
OK after the massive diorama castle project, I figured it was time to see what I can do in a limited amount of time. Were we able to pull off this as a one day build? I'm seeing some more time limited builds in the future. This was a lot of fun.
Link to the build that inspired this one: gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/2... Gorgeous!
Thanks everyone for helping me get to 100K subscribers. Unreal!!

I think you are slow because you are incredibly detail oriented and a perfectionist. You also tend to use materials that look so much more realistic but take longer. This is NOT a bad thing. Your work is top notch quality and stands out above most of what you see elsewhere. Sometimes you want a quick and imperfect build, sometimes you want something that just wow's people. Your style is the WOW. Don't beat yourself up over it. We love seeing the high quality. There is no reason you need to crank out lots of videos doing lots of builds. That appeals to some people. But multiple videos of a single high quality build is also awesome. Be a Maverick, you don't have to copy everyone else.

I think the roof needs to be stiffened up a bit? looks too soft to be thatch imo. could use watered down pva glue then comb it so it somewhat clumps together and dreis that way. idk i'd try some stuff out on test pieces. It has potential!

Yeah I would have done more and tried other things if it wasn’t a 1 day build. I’ll give that a try on a test piece and see how it turns out.👍

@@RealTerrainHobbies Best thing I can suggest is just a little bit of watered down wood or PVA glue brushed/combed through the fur. It's typically what's suggested with the thatching material from kits from the likes of 4ground.

If you use the fine comb on the roof and follow it up with some hairspray it'll firm it up without doing anything truly irreversible. Awesome build, great video and the ASMR style you've working into this one was really good and fitted in well. Super work :-D
@oldmanofthemountains3388

There is a trick to using fur for thatching! Mix PVA glue and water (about 50/50) and some medium brown acrylic paint. Just enough to tint the wash. Paint thia wash onto the thatching until the fibers start sticking together. Once they do, take an old fork and starting toward the bottom of the roof, "comb" the fibers. This simulates the bundles of thatching used on roofs like this. Do this in 1" to 1.5" rows all the way to the peak. After it dries, drybrush it with a lighter straw color. Then using a little more watered down PVA, apply some fine green flocking to the low points or dips in the roof (where water would naturally channel). It's a pretty quick process. The longest part is waiting for the fur to dry!
@recoveringsoul755
@recoveringsoul755 3 года назад
that sounds great. I've seen people use old towels too. Doesn't matter what color fur you get if you paint it.

I'm looking for miniature thatched houses since a couple of years since I just love all the different ideas. Fur never crossed my mind, but although there surely are more "accurate" ways to build them, the fur adds a beautiful bit of coziness to it! Making this style one of my favorites

The roof is interesting. Thatch tends to be pretty tidy, this looks more like a roof that was ignored for 50 years and has now become covered in grass. Or perhaps it's like one of those living roofs that are popular today.

Fun build, the fur for thatch is creative. Seamstress hint if you try that technique again - using a larger piece of fur and rip it into pieces. It hides the backing fabric and allows the long fur to hang freely on edge.
@RealTerrainHobbies
@RealTerrainHobbies 4 года назад
Hey great tip. Thanks Linda!🙂
@dougsundseth6904
@dougsundseth6904 4 года назад
If you score the back of the fabric with a knife before ripping, you get better precision and an easier tear, IME. I also prefer a less-blond and more gray fur, since thatch quickly weathers to that color. (To be fair, the color temperature settings on the various cameras are quite different. In some shots, the fur color looks much better than in others.) This kind of costume fur can also be used to represent crops if you make it mostly stand up. Golden yellow fur is good for this, since getting fur in the right color of green for spring crops is harder. It's often useful to border the "field" with hedgerows or fences and use a base (I like MDF) when using fur for fields.

What a great idea for a roof. I checked the reference you used and I saw he soaked the fur with water and PVA. I think this is why that looks more realistic. Thank you SO MUCH for making a miniature farmhouse with a thatch roof instead of anachronistic tile or shingle roofs. I tried making one during the pandemic lockdowns by cutting bunches of straw off an old broom but it just didn't look right and then I ran out of straw.

The best thing I found for doing a thatch roof is taking gardening twine and wrapping it around a strip of cardboard then run 2 beeds of hot glue on one edge. Then to remove cut the other edge to release from the cardboard. You can use the same technique for round roofs as well. The only difference is that you need to cut the cardboard into a ring. Do your gluing on the inside part of the ring. And the cutting on the outside of the ring. After removed from the cardboard comb it out and add black or dark brown. I hope this helps out in the future.

Thought I'd pitch in on the general roof comments! Think you certainly had the right idea, my thoughts would have been to make the strips narrower to have 3 or even 4 to each side of the roof structure (Sod roofing would be laid in rows etc) Also could try a larger toothed comb and as you drag it down- try spraying with hairspray to fix it into position (it IS hair after all lol!). It would have the effect of slightly clumping the strands together to give the appearance of thatch. To finish up I'd give the edges a very sharp trim, which would give the appearance of layers to the thatch which we see here in the UK still. As for colour, you can certainly use varied browns- even some greys to show extreme aging, but also don't forget that thatch can also gather moss as well...

Might the fur 'read' better as thatch if you thinned out some white glue (Elmer's) and brushed it in? The fur hairs would stick together more (not be fuzzy) and thicken. Brush it downward... and maybe even put some moss in the mixture (because thatch rots)? Love your work! Very soothing....
