Great vid!! I'm 51 now. My father was a true old school biker. Always wore greasy jeans, ZZ beard, dirty shirts, dirty jokes But tools on the road were no joke. He road old British bikes as a kid then moved up (or dow depending on who you talked to lol) to the HD pan & shovel heads. You were often on the side of the road helping a fellow rider or saving yourself. Tire tools and tube patch kits were popular. Test light. Basic combo wrenches, electrical tape, mini needle nose vise grips and a small emergency tarp. Working on your bike on the side of the road in the rain blows. He had all his gear and a few spare cloths tied to his oversized sissy bar / rat trap set up. Looked funny but was always the guy everybody knew he'd have something for ya. I sure miss him. Plug kit is the only thing your missing and that’s what my bag started with. I was 2hrs away from house when I got a flat rear tire. I was about 20min from a gas station. Thank god the gas station I went to had a tire plug kit. Then I also got a small air pump from a junk car at a salvage yard.The newer Buick regals has them and the newer Malibu. They are really small and it’s worth the peace of mind to have in your saddle bag if you have the room. My tool kit isn’t complete yet but I know more what to look for now that I watched the video. Thanks man. Great video.

BTW..I added something to my bag… bought one of those Harbor Freight LED head lamps. I wrapped around my tool kit and threw in a couple extra batteries. Easier to work in the dark with two hands than trying to hold on to a flashlight while you work.

I just stumbled upon this, and it reminded me of my first toolbag need on the side of the road. I was riding my first metric cruiser with a bunch of Harley rider friends, and one of them had an issue. No one had tools except me, and I pulled out my metric kit. The guy who broke down said my tools wouldn't work because his Super Glide was American, and it needed standard tools. Well, guess what ... they worked for what he needed. We got him sorted and back on the road, and he was laughing all the way through it. "All us bikers here, and it's the kid on the Suzuki who's the one smart enough to pack a tool roll."

The “tooth” side of diagonal cutters is actually for crimping butt connectors. Not a lot of people know that.

I realize that this video is a year old, but I keep 3 more things in my kit that you didn't mention, that others may find useful. A small C clamp for pushing brakes back if you have to do any brake work to free up a wheel. (Done this.) A kickstand spring, because those don't break at home and they don't take up much space or weight. A spare shifter peg. I can't count the number of times people with me have lost a shift peg on rides. Great video

I love your videos. Why? Because you get to the point and you don't try to be cool. You just do what the title of the video says you are going to do. I just bought a 2014 Tri Glide Ultra and your videos have already helped me a lot. I have done all of my own work for years (had a dad that taught me to work on stuff and figure it out). I will be making my own tool kit instead of buying the HD one for $170. Keep on making grat vids and KEEP THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN!

I put together a tool bag similar to yours but with more multi use tools to save the weight and size. Included a motorcycle multi tool that has been a great addition. I’ve completely removed a street glide fairing to fix a wiring issue on the side of the highway with it. Also added a small first aide kit that has come in handy as well.

I haven't been riding for too long however, from experience on the car side of things. The little premade kits are typically a good foundation to build upon and give you a solid starting point if you don't already own a lot of tools, and you're just learning how to wrench. My suggestion if you go the premade kit route, actually use your kit when doing maintenance and modding your bike. After a little bit you'll discover/add the tools that you need and have a kit pretty much tailored to your bike.

Great video, always important to some kind of tools on board. Like you, I put together my own using extras and cheapos I picked up anywhere. Used it to work on bike to see what I needed and what I didn't. Worked out pretty well.

Absolutely ...I usually pick up spare wrenches there and some spare sockets...all the 10mm's I can find lol usually about 4 or 5 bucks for a handful of tools

Another great video!! I built my own as well. Phillips and flat head, set of open end wrenches, zip ties, electric tape, sockets, channel lock, wire strippers, small bungee cord. I own a softail. Thankfully I haven't had to use yet. However the bungee has been useful a few times actually. Thanks again for these awesome videos!! I'm your new #1 fan!

I made my own from spare tools I had laying around my garage. I didn’t look at any of these videos, and took a 10 day trip. It rained like crazy and I had some electrical problems. I was quickly kicking myself for things I didn’t think to pack. Luckily, the one place I broke down was close to a NAPA auto parts store. I paid for crap that I could have packed from spares I already had. Appreciate your input.

Great video, definitely something folks need to keep in mind. We’ve actually put together a pretty extensive tool kit. I have it broken down into 2 smaller bags and a tool roll. This way we can split the kit up among 3 different bikes. This allows us to carry many different sized wrenches, sockets and such. This way, if we come across someone on another brand or foreign models we can offer assistance. We even carry a small jump box, actually assisted someone in Daytona earlier this year that left their lights on. Great video man!

Nice Shane..Yeah if you have the room then definitely can carry more tools. I do carry a jump box and should have mentioned that but it was separate so I forgot. But its been used a few times on buddies bikes too. Definitely a great add on!

Yep! I'm glad I saw this video. I been meaning to put some cheap tools together and putting them in the bag. Harbor Freight is a great place to look for alot of this. And it's a great place for kids or grandchildren to pickup just some of these things as a Christmas gift. The cheaper the better! Most Harbor Freight tools will do the job and get you going.

Yes sir jeff.,..HF has some great tools. I use quite a bit if HF stuff in the shop. We just got a HF in out hometown about 2 years ago..before that I had to drive 45 miles to get to one. Its came in very handy several times and you can shop some low end stuff for thr tool bag and higher end stuff for your own tools in the garage. They have a great mix! be safe and have a merry christmas!

Great call on the Tactical Admin Pouch Bag! With the molle straps and d-rings, and outer straps, you can pack or attach this bag almost anywhere on the bike. Or on tail bags etc. depending on how you ride and pack.

Another good video. I made up a tool bag for my bike years ago out of an old shaving kit bag. Like most of the other poster I add to it when I have the need. Lost the shifter shaft on my bike a few years why on the road. Made it to a parking lot where my buddy and I were able to fix it using the tools and spare parts he carried on his bike.

Great information. I do have a small kit as I am adding stuff. Allen wrenches and crescent wrench and lock tite and a few other wrenches I keep a shifter just in case mine quits working!

Your choice of using a tactical bag is a great idea and far cheaper too, as I’ve just ordered the exact same one which is far better & practical looking than some similar ones out there that try to mimic it without the securing clipped down straps or just pull through tightening straps which is not good in my personal opinion. An excellent video you have posted with helpful hints & ideas of what to pack and even where to source cheap tools too.

Thanks for the video. It was perfect because it told me what common wrenches, sockets, torx etc. that I need for my Harley. Plus it gave me an opportunity to purge my tool box of the cheap hand tools that unfortunately you buy when you’re young and can’t afford the good tools. I did as you said added some things like: Super Glue, some mechanics wire, cut down length of the bigger and stronger wire ties, a multi tool that has a knife, and small right angle screw drive and bits (Harbor Freight). I also purchased a 56 Lumens Triangle emergency light that doubles for a flashlight, lights solid red color and flashing emergency red. This I’ll attached to the front of my Molle bag. Hey Keith! Thats awesome man...I have some of those triangles too...pretty sure I got them from harbor freight...picked up 5 or 6 of them and tossed some in each vehicle. And i feel you about purging..im not one to throw away tools..and last month I went through my tools and built my son a toolbox, and tossed about 40 screwdrivers....holy cow man I didnt know I had so many stuffed in that drawer. I thought this is ridiculous when I pick out 2 or 3 different ones every time I grab a screwdriver...I couldnt even tell you where 80% of those even came from lol

Goin from Bridgeport CT to Niagara Falls one year, had an injector fail, between two of us we had everything I needed to take it apart, but whatever he supplied I made sure to put in my tool roll. While a couple others went to Syracuse Harley we disassembled the bike and waited. Fun times…..

Actually I was looking at that one and the one I got from amazon at the same time...the only reason I went with the one I got was the price, ill be honest. The roaring fire gear roll is very nice though and I had my eye on it for awhile. Thanks for the great tip and the review..I may make one from that bag next for the other bike so I dont have to keep swapping them out.

Screw in tire plugs, 12v mini air pump, Leatherman, micro fiber towels and rain-x, rokstraps, lighter. I also keep my heel shifter and drill out the bolt hole and put in a shank bolt/nut/ lock washer. In 2018 on my old bike 2001 ultra classic, coming home from Sturgis had the shifter come off at 85mph on I-80 in the twisties dropping into Salt Lake City in a rainstorm. The stock bolt is all threads/ no shank and the threads in the slotted area wore out. Luckily I had the heel shifter in the bottom of the saddlebag from when I removed it. I never used/ liked a heel shifter. Now on my 2018 geezer glide ultra couch I put in shank bolts in all areas of the linkage along with upgraded after market linkage and an extra shaft. My sons friend broke his shaft ( insert giggle here) up in Azalea Montana at topless Tuesday and 20 min later was riding again.

Great video. Will be making some additions to mine. Only thing I'd add isn't a tool but a shifter shaft. Seems to be a very common breakdown. We've had them go twice on trips.

Great Video! I use a tool bag equipped similarly on my Road King. I also carry a tire plug kit and a small lithium battery powered inflator. Have used both Twice in helping stuck Bros on the roadside. Lastly, although not for the faint of heart

I carry a 30' length of strong thin nylon rope. Have actually towed (very slowly and on a level road) a buddy's softail with a fried transmission back to a safe place.

yes I need to address my tire plug kit for sure..and can you tell me which inflator you have..I read some reviews on some on amazon and they were pretty bad reviews on all of them...id like to get a good one.

Great list! As others mentioned I keep a tire plug kit, pressure gauge and valve stem tool with me. I always have a small set of vice grips and long nose vice grips. I would suggest those. I keep 2 small pieces of rubber hose that can slide over the long nose tips and the long nose vice grips can double as a hose crimper/ clamp if needed. I also have a second adjustable wrench in my tool kits in case the limited open ends and sockets I have don’t fit something I need 2 wrenches to tighten. It might be excessive but I also have a micro 12v test light, 2 small C clamps, spark plugs, plug gap disc, plug socket, stubby screwdrivers, a small file, cold chisel and pin punch. I also keep some tie wire, para-cord, cotter pins, safety pins, paper clips, clothespins, JB weld, locktight and superglue and a funnel on the bike as well. I guess the sky is the limit. On some of my tools I cut the handles down so the tools would be smaller. I also have the small 6ft motorcycle jumper cables as well as a small hand air pump which I keep on anyway for my police air adjust seat. Headlamp and basic first aid kit are good too.

Opened my tool bag and little dried desert flower petals were there from a ride with a custom bike builder. Az desert ride, near the birder. Bag saved his day. Our ride continued.

Great video!! Your tool bag looks similar to mine, but the idea of carrying one in my pickup was a great suggestion! Only thing I would add to your list is a small tire plug kit..... THAT I have had to use on the bike, just make sure to use it at a gas station where you can pump the tire back up lol.

Thats a great tip John! I know I need to address the air pressure issue or flats..I do have some repair kits and I did try one of those amazon rechargeable air inflators..little hand held one...it sucked..for 60 bucks it was terrible. Ill keep looking!

Thanks Steve, this is a great idea, I bought my 2020 RGL new 16 months ago and being that I'm driving a new bike I have never felt that I really needed any tools with me other then a few real basic tools that I do have. But after seeing your video I'm going to start putting a tool bag together today, maybe I'm just lucky but in all my many, many years of riding I have never had a bike break down other then blowing a rear tire one time, and that little experience stopped me from trying to get the most mileage out of my tires. I have always wrenched on my bikes keeping then in great working order and I have always put lots of miles on my bikes 10 to 12,000 miles each year. I did order the tool bag from your link and will order a few other items but had to laugh a bit, I added up all items with the Amazon links and it totaled $159.71, now most of us have some odd tools laying around that we can add to this kit but thanks for listing them here so we can order those tools that we may have to go buy. Hey Dave...not sure how this comment slipped passed me but it did...you have been very lucky to never be on the side of the road...even scarier now than it was 20 years ago..no one pays attention...I mean you see people hitting full on squad cars with lights flashing...you think they wont smoke you on a bike? I want to get off the road asap! And yes getting every bit if that from amazon is a bit much for sure...I just wanted to make sure everyone was clear on what I got and most of the stuff I had laying around and I agree most guys do.

Yeah Michael I to searched high and low for pre made bags but none of them really suited me or what I wanted and then paying a little extra because it was pre made didnt settle well either. I just realized my links arent working so im fixing those but seriously check out that molly bag on amazon and then start building a kit..youll be way happier

Thanks Steve. There are certainly a lot of options for tool bags and like many things, expensive doesn't mean better. I don't have a pre-made tool bag. I did pretty much what you have done using spare tools I have in the garage. What I haven't done yet is the second tool bag. Remember that these tools are for emergency roadside repair and are not intended to be your regular shop tools. So being budget minded when purchasing is not likely to come back and bite you.

This is by far the best video on the subject. No bs just good solid info. Thanks for sharing. 40 years of riding and still getting EXCELLENT info from riders like you. In my tool I have electric,teflon and duct tape. Also, I have stainless steel wire along with some jb steel stick. From experience, I had a person detail my bike. Detailer did not snap the tool bag correctly and came out flying in the freeway. All of my tools were lost. Also, do not overload the saddle bags and make sure you keep them balance. Lastly, I have a cigarette lighter power compressor and Cartridge for CO2 Inflators just in case. This tool bag is also used with the additional tool for the BMW gs 1200r and Ducati 1198.

Something similar to this kit amzn.to/488IUWI and this inflator amzn.to/3OxR6Ja These are the ones I keep on the bike. The inflator is very reliable and doesn't get super hot like the cheap ones do.

One thing I have in my tool kit is a length of re-bar tie wire. Plastic coated wire and zip ties are great but if you need wire to hold something that’s very hot the plastic would make a real mess. Re-bar wire wraps really tight and easy to work with.

Great video Steve, I watched this some time ago and put together a kit, even bought that tool pouch and a few other things that you had the link to on your site here. Great kit and I have never had to use anything out of it but then I do my own maintenance and I just don't have any problems with my 2020 RGL, but it is nice to know that if I need a tool on the road I probably have what I need with me.

I built my own tool roll. I’m certain of a few things. My roll is more complete than anything available for purchase. My tools are better quality than anything available as a kit. I’m certain that I have more money in building it than what is necessary, but I’m okay with that. When I work on my motorcycle in the winter, I purposely work with the tools from my tool roll.

My Bike has the stock tools plus the rear shock adjust spanner. Added 750 amp jump starter, Tire plug kit, a few face cloths for rags, volt meter, Rubber gloves, N95 face masks, DOT 5 brake fluid, hand style air pump. A first aid kit is also handy. Ciao.

Well I did the same thing you did I just put one together mostly from harbor freight the only difference is I put an extra toe shifter... And last year we were in Utah and my buddy pulled over on the highway once we caught up to him he told us his shifter fell off... I pulled out the extra one five minutes later we're back on the road.. one other thing I do have. A shorty ball-peen hammer. Otherwise in that I have the same exact bag you have... Thanks for doing this video. Helps me to think that I'm on the right track.

I'm Auto Tech. There was a bag In My saddle Bag When I Bought It. I Added a Special Operation Equipment Tool Roll & I'm Building it Up. I Gotta Have Good Pliers. Knipix Cobras, Dikes & Good Pliers. A Long #3 Phillips to get my seat off so far. Some tape & Cable ties. I Have extra Flash light & Knife already. I Probably carry too much.

One tip to store electrical or other tape in a very compact way is to take an old plastic card (like a credit style card) and put several wraps around it. Stores very flat and you can carry several feet of tape that way. I would also consider adding a tire plug/patch kit and small self powered inflator to the tool kit for long distance riding. Even if just to maintain your air pressure, it's handy to have a small self contained compressor and they take up very little space. Great video as always!

Another really great video... the only thing I would add is my trusty Vise-Grip pliers... Heck I've seen them used as a shifter arm to get you somewhere to fix it correctly.

Years ago pulled out of the old pine knot saloon in T or C New Mexico late Sunday night about 80 miles from home . on I- 25 south , dang! Flat tire , no , it was the rear.axle about half.way out .me and bro. Mike pick scooter up push axle back in n lock it down with vice grip pliers. Sabotage or careless me I don't know . pretty hairy experience either way... Vice grip pliers highly recommend for multiple uses.

Hey Alvin yeah just think small amounts of tape, zipt ies etc but try to keepo the basic tools you thin k may help you...remember its not really about fixing the issue but rather fixing it "enough" to get you off the side of the road. Thanks for checking it out and have a Happy New Year!
