NLP had its origins in the 1970s when two young Americans, John Grinder (linguist) and Richard Bandler (mathematician, psychotherapist, and computer programmer) set out to find out what was the reason why the three best American psychotherapists (Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir and Fritz Pearls), had a much higher success rate in their interventions with patients than the rest of their colleagues. After careful observation of their work, they concluded that their success lay in the use of specific communication patterns and procedures.
From there, they suggested that the interesting thing would be to be able to get to know these successful patterns in detail in order to be able to reproduce them, and thus anyone who put them into practice would achieve similar results. In this way they became "behavior shapers."
