It's easy for Bangkok to look modern, but it has to be modern as well, in its infrastructure and organisation. It's far from that at the moment, and it's character is being taken apart bit by bit without a second thought. Global brands on glass and concrete may offer the impression of affluence but the people and lifestyle should also evolve, otherwise it'll all be just a superficial facade. The attention to detail and research that goes into these videos is incredible. In a league of your own of all the BKK youtubers. This is national geographic research. I've been an annual visitor to BKK since 1996 and watching these videos makes me wonder what the local people who are displaced to make way for condos and shopping malls make of all these changes?

Agree with you Pat, the advertising graffiti has no place being spread everywhere. It's free advertising and it's repetition so no original ideas. Free billboard space for corporations.

Bangkok Pat: I am 63 years old Thai living in San Jose, California. I am so glad that you captured “Slum in the Sky”. When I was 12 years old and that was 1972, my dad purchased two adjacent flats (condos) on the 6th floor (the top floor) at the left corner of the front of the building next to the stairways. It was an upscale building back then. It looks so run down right now (I guess that what happens when there is no homeowners’ association to upkeep the building). It is sad but that is the life of a building. We were kids and we had a lot of good memories and some were scary. Thanks!

As someone who lived in Bangkok for ten years and had to move abroad for work, these videos are a blessing. They allow me to sit on my couch thousands of miles away and feel as though I’m back in the quiet alleyways and busy streets of the City of Angels. I still go back once a year but these act as a nice booster shot!

Pat, the music and the demolition, bought tears to my eyes, at 30 mins in. Not because the two buildings per se, but all the areas which I walked in the past 20 years, are rapidly changing. The wood houses, some of which I filmed at night, knowing they would be gone, before I am.

Last January, I visited the Icon Siam shopping center in Bangkok. I had a surprisingly good meal for a fair price there. And the toilets are spotless. Good to see that you can get local Thai food. Not just Burger King and the lot.

Bangkok is accidentally cool. The cultural fabric comes from its organic growth. When things are planned, you end up with shopping malls, glass/concrete builds and Starbucks. Commerce reigns. Love your documentation of the real Bangkok, Pat. What you find is the Bangkok that inspires nostalgia and fascination.

I had to be resuscitated. Heart-stopping, it was! Recently, I walked parts of several areas you featured. Interesting that you ended up at Central Chitlom. I walked through it and was very impressed. I especially liked the murals near the elevators on each floor, and I loved the gourmet supermarket. Thanks again for another gem. I will get you a coffee!

Hope ypu recovered ok! I am a regular at Central chitlom as they have the best food hall and deli for take out dinners. I usually pass by about 3 times a week on my way home

@BangkokPat Interesting. You'll remember this: On Central Chitlom's Sukumvit side, there was a Starbucks on the right side. I was a regular there. So many memories! I agree with you about the exterior alterations - not so sure how it will turn out. But I do love what they've done to the interior. It's got everything. It's like a mall, but a little less overwhelming than the giant ones on Sukhumvit. I could see it being a favorite of mine. Great video, again. I have shared it with several others.

That old house being demolished looks like a classic example of a Bangkok house being built with one eye on it being used for a tv "Nang Nam Now' soap opera. Perhaps owned by a tv exec with a sideline and a desire to surpass and impress the tv watching public. Bette Midler style architecture, but not quite as gaudy as more contemporary Bangkok wedding cake architecture. :-)

Reminds me of my 2023 vacation in Thailand. We stayed in Ibis Riverside on Charoen Nakhon rd. We liked it a lot. Peaceful near the river. Pepsi pear not far. And the typical public gym under the bridge.
