I just updated my laptop to windows 10 and for some reason my laptop has been extremely slow and after following these steps and restarted my laptop, things are MUCH FASTER now...thank you
Basically what he did was input the recommended paging file size into the initial size and then now take the recommended size and divide into 2 and then add back into the initial size and you'll get the max size For example his recommended was 2047 2047/2 = 1023.5 1023.5 + 2047 = 3070.5 So he input his initial = 2047 And his max = 3070 Whereas mine is 1393/2 = 696.5+1393 = 2089.5 So my initial is 1393 Max 2089 Hope this helps!!!
If you have 6GB or more of ram, turn this off. Turning off the virtual memory in cases where there is enough ram to cover everything without issue will decrease loading times and hard disk usage. Unless you play a game that takes a giant RAM hike (In my case, Minecraft with Shaders set to 4-6GB allocated on an 8GB system that sits at 1.8GB usage idle), you will never get an Out of Memory issue (OoM). If you do get an OoM issue, set the virtual memory to 16-2048 so it can move the background processes to make the room it needs to run the game or program. But still, the shaders. I gotta have em', even if I do have to set minecraft to shove 4GBs into itself to guarantee it doesn't crash... It might work with 2GB though, I'll have to try that later...
I've got a Ryzen tower now and decided to get 16GB with it as well, I've disabled virtual memory and there seems to be no problems, even with Minecraft using heavy shaders. With the time that has passed since my original comment, I will up my minimum ram before considering it to 8GB. If you have 16GB of ram you should definitely turn this off. It saves write cycles on SSD's and reduces load on HDDs, so unless you want to dedicate an SSD to virtual memory for something like running heavy load server stuff that needs tens of gigabytes of ram to run, it's not worth it and will negatively impact your performance (hdd) or hardware lifespan (ssd) when windows decides to use it for something stupid. I've seen windows sit and copy half of the stuff in ram to virtual memory without any logical reason; In most cases, there was plenty of ram, usually 8GB or higher, and there were no background processes running, and it would still shove about 0.5-1GB of its regular ~1.5-2.1ish idle usage into virtual memory.
Meek Is it really not explained in the video? I know it's been a very long while since I watched this but I think instructions were in the video -I just made a recommendation for how high or low to set it. If you could skim back over the video for me, and you can't find where this is done, then I will gladly help further.
I haven't touched my virtual memory settings until I watched this, but I went into the setting and it's currently the complete opposite of what you encountered. My recommended is around 1.6K, but my currently allocated has been auto set to over 11K. Why would that be?
"currently allocated is always less than recommended" wow mine was set to 4 times the recommended (recommended 1340 actual 4945) and thats what the system did on its own.
Morpheus I know this is old, but same. Recommended for me is 1906 MB and Currently Allocated is 5376 MB so I have NO idea what to change mine to. I just want The Sims 3 to work without error codes and crashing 😩😩
@@jjmaybank3178 I know this is old, but this wont affect your performance in any game. What youre doing here is like adding extra ram, but only this ram is a lot slower and wont be useful for games, but it can be useful for other stuff
I have the same situation. Mine is 1393 MB recommended and 2688 MB allocated. If it's larger than the recommended, do I still need to change the initial and maximum? Pls help
That WILL NOT optimize your PC what you should do is make sure you have enough physical RAM and then turn of virtual memory all together, virtual memory uses the Hard drive as memory the H/D is the bottle neck of your PC when it comes to speed so using it will slow down your PC I am not sure if it still would apply to solid state drives as the system itself may still slow it down.
It's 1.5 times the total amount of system memory, not 1.5 times the recommended amount. The recommended amount is fine, if you lock it down in size to prevent fragmentation.
frosted1030 Before you comment please realize that this video was created in Oct 2 2014. This was when Windows 10 was still far from the final release image, therefore, his start menu might be a little different to what it is today. :)
FireFox Web Browser The rule is the same across Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7. I can't say anything about 10, I only have experience with the betas. Tomorrow we will find out.
+Chuck Norris It does increase the performance depending on how much usable RAM you have available. When you set the paging file amounts to 50000, that's 50 GB's that your putting towards to boost your gaming performance. If anyone has any questions, post them in this comment section.
Where did you get 2047 from though or help me out here my Minimum allowed is 16MB , Recommended : 1631MB , and Currently allocated: 9216MB. I am going to be adjusting the Minimum allowed, and the Currently Allocated which is the current value doubled. What is my first figure for Minimum allowed and how did you reach that figure. I think this machine has a total of 6GB RAM, if it matters. Anyone feel free to answer that if he doesn't ?
I would never mess with the virtual memory unless the system you're using has 1GB or less of RAM installed. All the virtual memory does is use part of your hard drive as RAM which is usually slower & doesn't benefit the computer much.
sheek1982 I used to think as many seem to that with 16gb or more of memory you can turn off your page file. Since then I have had multiple highly qualified people (developers from game companies, etc.) tell me that this is a myth. Any performance loss is minimal (
+Bruce Hilton About how much do you think it would cost to upgrade my RAM? I currently have 4GB of RAM, but when I set my Virtual Memory to System Managed, I tend to get a low memory warning every once in a while. Should I do what it says in this video instead? I do already have the current memory allocated set to over 3x the recommended amount. Look, long story short, I just want my computer to run faster without having to worry about low memory warnings all the time. Will this really do it, or will it make things worse?
My opinion is that another 4gb would be huge. Virtual memory helps but when needed it is much slower. A stick of 4gb should be relatively cheap, and easy to install...you just have to make sure it is then same as what you have. (I have generally bought memory in sets for this reason). At the same time it depends on what you are running. Your OS could be claiming much of your 4gb. Some games are real memory hogs, especially when still in early access before they are optimized. Other applications, like imaging/streaming etc. I am not that familiar with. But really, I strongly encourage you to go to 8gb, that's the main message. You are talking 20-25 USD, not a huge hit.
+Bruce Hilton my computer has 3.8gb memory being used right now and i only have google chrome open with 5 tabs and nothing else, well task manager. it just seems with windows 10 all the service host and other features take up a tiny bit of memory each and somehow adds up to a lot. altho if i leave my computer on for a long time eventually it is taking up like 7gb ram on nothing, because i would have exactlly what id have open now but it would be magically using more ram later on in the day after i have played games like gta 5 or assassins creed unity. like after i close the games and everything and close everything on my computer it would magically be using 50% of my memory to have nothing open at all. and i have 12 GB of memory in this computer.
THANKYOU MY FRIEND, my windows 10 have an in issue of 100% disk, and set my VM to ''16384'' (I have 8gb RAM) and it solve my problema thanks..... Apologize my english.
If you have 4 GB of RAM, set virtual memory to 8 GB (Custom size: set both initial and maximum size to 8192) If you have 8 GB of RAM, set virtual memory to 16 GB (Custom size: set both initial and maximum size to 16384). If you have 16 GB of RAM, set virtual memory also to 16 GB (Custom size: set both initial and maximum size to 16384) If you have 32 GB of RAM, set virtual memory also to 8 GB (Custom size: set both initial and maximum size to 8192) just in case.
What does adjusting the virtual memory, i.e. lying to the machine that it has more resources than it actually does, accomplish? Sorry if this is a noob question, but I need to know the reason before I do it.
+Ken Keller If your PC doesn't have enough RAM it uses the Hard drive as memory too. If you have enough physical memory I would turn of virtual memory all together as it slows down the PC quite a bit.
+Ken Keller Virutal memory, as far as I understand from googling, has to do with windows keeping a continuous log of all the stuff on your computer so that the search feature happens faster. In my case this file was getting maxed out and everything was going very slow so this was a very helpful video.
Please help. I need to know what the best VM allocation for my laptop is. I want to play Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition Win10 x64 i5-5200U processor 2.20GHz System recommends 1397MB Some tech advised me to set both min/max at 8192. I wanted to do those settings but I was worried it might affect the performance of my other games like FO3 and Civ5.
i have changed my virtual memory following this video, however i decided to revert back to the default settings as i saw the memory spaces in my D drive go from approx 120 GB to 20GB, my memory has still remained at 20 GB, do you know of any solutions to this?
I found I was using about 5 gig of VM (page file). when managed by the system, I only have 4 gig of ram! I set it to recommend setting ie about 1.3 gig to about 2 gig. However after reboot it still says 5 gig!! one othe thing was my boot time had been slow last two boots, over 2 mins but it sometimes does that for a a few boots, it seemed to boot up faster than ever, about 21 second, before best as about 25 or more. Well at least it reboooted OK I shall see how it goes, I had been having occasions boot and shut down problems, which seemed to hve imprved recently. I will see how it goes. I have ran without a page file in the past (not on this machine) seemed to run OK IIRC.
My new laptop is hp i3, windows 10,but it's opens a icon slowly&showing busy too.i installed&updated Mc fee anti virus too, along that I can't install mobile apps in that.whaever wish to installed it's downloading in to my cell, instead of Laptop.pls tell me how to rectify it.
Does putting so bigger size than the ram breaks the computer? It was working fine and smooth for a day and fo the other day it broke, I'm stuck at loading windows logo been loading like half an hour.
I've disabled on older machines with way less than that ie the equivent of a bargain bucket modern PC. When a PC pages a lot it kills the machine anyway you have ot kill your prowser and restart it to get it useable.
My PC has a Ram of 32 gb ddr4 ... Its Showing : Minimum allowed : 16 MB Recommended : 4981 MB Currently Allocated : 14848 MB What Ammount Do you Write in the boxes of Customed Size ?
My PC has a Ram of 4 gb ... Its Showing : Minimum allowed : 16 MB Recommended : 1397 MB Currently Allocated : 704 MB What Ammount Do I Write in the boxes of Customed Size ? Please Help !
Okay.. you absolutely screwed my computer. My GTA now runs at 10fps and I need a fix right now like seriously, it was running around 90-130fps now it cant get over 15. Not only gta 5, but all my games, fallout 4, dirt 3, bo3, skyrim, bf1, etc. please provide a step to step instruction to reset my system settings to like, what they were originally.
I'm terrible with computers so I need some help. Is 4gb Ram with an i5 processor good enough to run basic stuff like RU-vid, Netflix and some lesser demanding games?
though with this little its quite common that with few viruses, too much apps etc it starts to constanly be like 70% so you might need to do more maintenance than someone with 8gb or 16gb (the speed of memory is kinda important too, 1333mhz is pretty bad 2133 is pretty fine for general use and gaming
Are both your RAM cards exactly of the same brand, size and speed. If not, they cannot be used as dual memory. There's a possibility that one of your memory cards isn't working. To check, you need to remove and have only one memory card and run memory diagnostics to see if it's working properly. Repeat the same with the other card.
I have Win 10 installed on my i3 64bit laptop with 8GB ddr3 and it says I have 8,00 GB (2,93 GB usable). I've tried many things like the video and changed the virtual memory size but keeps showing this. Any ideas? Thank you
I have 16 gb rM, but I want virtual increase so it says recommended that I start with 2935 and how many times can I x that like I did x4 and it gives my 11,470mb memory
I don't think you would PyokerZ. Look at your recommended total paging file size for all drives (at 1:52), and then put that for your initial size (under "Custom Size"), and then multiply that number by 1.5, and put THAT number into maximum size.
what is virtual memory? thats not my ram right? idk i got 12gb ram on my computer and when i see virtual memory it shows i got 4096 mb total paging file size for all drives.
Tanvir Sarker thats the problem lol. i should have more than enough but i don't thats why i came here. i played gta 5 and after while my pc was taking up 90% memory and even if i close everything the computer is magically using like 50% memory on nothing. when i boot up and nothing is open it's on like 25-30% now with google chrome, with 13 tabs open + steam open im only using 36 % memory. but if i go play gta 5 or assassins creed for an hour or 2 and then close the game and still only have google chrome and steam open it's magically then using like 50-60% memory. no idea why my computer idles with more memory the longer it's on. and it's a problem because when that happens im no longer able to open and play games like gta because they then skyrocket my memory to 90% and my computer gets error msgs for running low on memory and force closes games.
what to do if my currently allocated size is more than the recommended? Shal I increase it further as my laptop is lagging a lot during games and sometimes in windows. please help. Thanks in advance.
my currently allocated is 4608 and my recommended is 1407 i put my initial size as the recommended and on the max i put 2110 becouse 1407 times 1.5 is 2110 will something happend to my computer if i do that becouse i really wanna play fortnite and im getting stutters, freezes and lagging
I have HP Probook 450 G3 and have upgraded RAM to 6GB however under system settings the computers says Installed memory 6GB(useable 2.4GB), how do I make the whole 6GB useable
After turning off over 20 services and disabling about a dozen useless auto start programs, turning all the animation and crap off I managed to get Win10 to use only 1GB after start up that's as low as I could get it.
Matthew Muncal I found out the math that you are suppose to do at 2:42. You multiply the amount of RAM you have (in GB) by 1024. Then multiply your answer by 1.5 and that is how much RAM (in MB) you are allowed to allocate from your hard drive or whatever.
