Yeah with Optifine you can hold a lantern/torch in your hand and it will light up the area. Also if you throw the torch down a hole it will light up the hole like a glow-stick :D I cannot imagine playing Minecraft without Optifine, it should really be included in the game from the start

Bonus fact: the torch model when placed on walls was changed in 1.8 to look more like a rotated rectangle instead of a parallelogram, you can compare the model from 1.7 to 1.8 and you can notice the difference

I was in a rather laggy server and i broke some gravel, but i put a torch under it so fast that the server didnt have time to recognize that there was a block update, so the gravel was just floating there on top of the torch 😂
