The worst part about Rengoku’s death isn’t who he leaves behind. It’s that his dad rlly does care for his family, the fact that we saw what just losing his wife did, and how much he tried to stop his son from joining so something like this didn’t happen. The fact that he now has to deal with the loss of two of his precious ones, with one of them being someone who probably doesn’t know how much he loves them. The fact that all the guilt from over the years is now crushing him. The fact that in his mind his other son might follow that same path and there’s nothing he can do about it. The fact that he feels as if he did everything in his power to keep his family safe and even going as far as to belittle them and try to keep them from putting themselves in danger and he still failed. The fact that even after all of that “please take care of yourself” is what he’s left with. Not what he probably thought was justified outrage. Not a message to take care of his youngest child. Not a message telling him to be a better father or that it was his fault. Just “take care of yourself”. That has got to hurt more than anything else. The fact that after all of that, your son still loved you enough to care that much for you, and you never even got to say goodbye.
