I have always used a spray bottle especially when I used to do ironing for my mother. I started with a bottle where I shook the water onto the fabric, or pillow cases, Dad's shirts and hankerchefs. I was very happy when spray bottles came out. It was so much easier. Now I still use because I can dampen areas that need the most steam before I clamp it down. I don't like irons that leak.
I use my mist bottle for Best Press & have another to use for water. I have a sewing room that is so full of "stuff", I don't fit in there to sew. I need to go through it & give away the older fabrics that I no longer wish to sew with so I can enjoy my room again. I am following your motto & only sewing what I like now.
The mister you bought will become one of your favorite purchases! I absolutely love mine. I finally relented and got one about a year ago. I don’t know how I lived without one.😊
I never use a steam iron any more. Too many times they leaked & stained my fabric. I use a dry iron & spray starch. I love that “sprinkle” bottle for light touch ups after piecing! You will love it. It mists the fabric just enough
I love that spray bottle. I put 1/2 Best Press and 1/2 filter water in it, and use it like steam in the iron. I totally agree with the comments about leaky steam from irons staining fabric.
I have two of the spritz bottles just like yours, one for water and one for starch. It gives off an even, find mist. No big spots nor missing some parts, like all the other bottles I tried. Irons always end up leaking. The quilt retreats I go to no longer allow water in the irons. You will love this spritzer!
I like the spray bottle and use it as others do to dampen fabric and then press, so no water in iron. It is also nice to wet down granddaughters hair for braids. I like the idea of "Tidy Up Thursday" since it is the end of your video week and best to tidy up when done. I need that habit as too many piles of projects/ finished fabrics/ projects I want to do in disarray currently. You know, Mr. Rogers always said to put your toys and clothes away when done!!! Have a good week-end and thanks for all you do to help us keep sewing and projects rolling along!
The mister bottle is my favorite. I have one for water and one for starch. The water one I also use to remove the “blue pen” marker when I use it for marking. The mister delivers the perfect amount of liquid.
I use the spray bottles for water, but using one for Best Press sounds great. My concern is that the Best Press will eventually gunk up the spray opening. Have you ever had a problem like that?
I use my spray bottle filled with water instead of filling my iron with water. I have heard that every iron begins to sputter or leak if it is filled with water…I have had my iron sputter rust spots on fabrics in the past. 🥴 Thanks so much Pat for all of your videos….they have been a must watch for me for years!❤
Love it. I have three of those type of misters. I keep two filled with water (one at each ironing station) and the third is full of Mary Ellen's Best Press. I use the water then there is a stybborn fold (usually something that sat too long in my stash) and plain old steam does not do the trick. Best Press if I want to starch.
I love my mister bottle. I use BestPress in mine. The fine mist is so much better than regular spray. You'll love it.... it's a game changer. Thank you for another fun video 😊
I love the white board for displaying cross stitch. I don’t have one YET! On my boards I use Velcro to be able to switch out the crossstitch. Others use magnets.
I have three mister bottles for my sewing. I’ve had to many irons that have leaked over my fabrics. I love how it goes. My newest one is a large capacity one that is rose gold and shiny from amazon. I got same ones just different colors for my mom, bestie, and my aunt who all sew because I love it sew much!
Love my spray bottle from the FQS. So far, have only had water in mine. When I redid my sewing room a couple years ago I put several tubs/boxes under my cut table. Promised myself I'd go through it and reduce the clutter. Yeah, still there and probably a bit more. So, that is my sore spot. Will be cleaning out and then make curtain to hide what is left stored under there.
I love Lemon Chiffon and I think I’ll start cutting some squares for it in September. I already have a couple of leader/ender blocks going so I don’t really want to add another one yet because it gets too crazy.😜 Yes, to a Thursday challenge! It’s funny how new ideas can fizzle or change but everything I’ve pulled for it stays in trolley until I don’t even remember what I was going to make. They do need to get cleared out to make space for a current projects. (3 trolleys filled with stuff!) I’m trying to limit how many things I have going at once but I’m not successful at that. My space is rather overrun with ideas at the moment. I finished one project from the trolley last night and working another one while enjoying your videos. Thanks for always sharing your goings on.
I have three of those spray bottles. I keep Best Press in them, and spray my fabric before pressing my fabrics before cutting, a light spray, not saturated
I’m thinking “Work Through It Thursday” because I need to finish longarm quilting a customer’s quilt, finish hand stitching the mitered corners/label of a quilt I’m gifting this weekend and work on a Xmas stocking I’m knitting to be gifted in October. Phew! 😍😍😍
Love my mister saves my wrist and hand. It is great for a lite mist of starch. I use mine for starching small pieces of fabric when cutting smaller pieces. Great help to me.
Tidy up Thursdays would give us a day to reorganize, reimagine where things aren’t working for us space wise or for an easy flow in our sewing room. I like the bins you have I have some and I love how they work for quilt kits, one has all my finished blocks to the quilts I’m working on. Yesterday I finished a botm and sewed the fist row now I can patiently wait until the next block comes. This past weekend I tackled cutting up finishing kits for 5 quilts. Such an accomplishment. Love working on several project like you! I enjoy your videuos Pat thank you sew 🧵 much ~Martha San Jose, California
By the way I have 2 misters one with water and I put a 🌺 flower 🌸 washing tape on the top and the other is 1/2 💧 water and 1/2 starch. I love the spray is a light mist. I think you will like it. I have the yellow large Oliso and I don’t put water in it. I’m learning so much from your videos I especially like your organization tips and tricks you share. Hugs Pat.
I love the spray bottle you have too. I keep starch in one and have one for water or Marys Best Press. It’s easy on my hands. I have a ton of UFOs. Need to move faster. Keep seeing new things and want to buy it all. Oh please show us your patterns and go over what sew alongs are coming up. I like to sew with someone.
Love these bottles. Ihave one with water and one with diluted "best press". I never use steam because over time problems always arise ie: spitting, brown streaks, etc. Even using distilled water.
Love those misters! Have one for water and one for Best Press. My water one is a "Ms. Bobbins" one I caught on sale a few years ago. I bought my water one while away visiting my MIL and got it from a beauty supply store because that is where my MIL had gotten hers (a tip from one of her guild members). My "Tidy Up Thursday" projects are as follows: continuing laying out the 2-1/2' "Scrap Squares" project that I finally started! Mine is for a Christmas quilt using the colors Red, Green, Black and Gold (and neutrals of course) and will have inserts from the MODA "Cheer and Merriment" panel interspersed with the squares. I've also pulled out my "Scrappy Figs" BOM again and have a block I have to finish the cutting for. I've decided that when you work on the "Celebrate With Quilts" Sampler, I will work on a BOM block since my version of "Christmas Figs" is being made in a scrappy mix of various Fig Tree lines. For both projects I will use the blue and white blocks I cut months ago for a one block "Baby Bunting" quilt from "Celebrate" as their leader/ender. All of that and Day 2 of the (virtual) Free-motion Quilting Summit to boot! So much to do!! So wish I could go to the November VAQM event but we'll be down that way in October, darn it!
I use one of those spray bottles for my Best Press to get a finer mist and less stress on my hand, and another with water to refresh my curls between shampoos.
Hello Pat , the pattern fabric in the Liberty pack which you said were candies are actually Christmas Crackers ,. We have them in the UK and they are usually made of paper , 2 people take an end each and pull .. it makes a good snap sound and there is a novelty gift inside along with a paper crown and a joke or motto to read . Some people now buy the basic bits and add their own gifts . We always had these when I was a child and I still get them now to have with our Christmas meal. So enjoy your videos xx
Thursday name ideas: Thursday Throwdown, Thursday Reset. My small studio supports two hobbies-quilting and several forms of art (acrylic painting, oil pastels, drawing) so trying to keep things tidy and storing all of the supplies I have (especially canvases etc.) is a challenge. I have to go through regularly and reprioritize, and ruthlessly clear out stuff so everything fits and I still have room to be inspired and create. Yesterday I went through an antique shelf unit and cleared out two stacks of books I no longer refer to and a large amount of art paper (why did I get so much??) and also emptied out a 2-drawer filing cabinet to give to my son. I will get a new unit that better suits my needs and space. I offered the books on my local Buy Nothing group and they were claimed within hours. I will likely do the same with the paper, but want to see if I can give it to a school art teacher first. I have 3 of those mister bottles, one for water, one for best press, and one for Acorn. Don’t leave water, even filtered water, sit in the bottle-it gets sour. I love the mist. It reduces the amount of product you use and how wet your fabric gets, which means if you need just a bit on a seam, you don’t have to worry as much about shrinkage. I have started prestarching my fabric for many projects to preshrink and give it some body. I don’t bother for simple patterns but for anything with a lot of points to match or lots of pieces, I like using prestarched fabric. In that case, I just mist water while piecing, which reactivates the starch. My iron is a 30 year old Rowenta that I no longer put water in so it will hopefully last quite a few more years. The mist works way better than steam. I love that turquoise/teal bundle you got. Unfortunately that is the color I always am attracted to so I keep buying it! 😂
Hey Pat, I use my spray bottle all the time for those deep creases folds that are in fabric. Everything is looking great , love the lemon chiffon squares. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️🙂
I am finally working on the flannel shirt lap quilt for my niece! I have three 16" blocks to sew up yet, I did 5"squares into 4 patches (didn't have a plan, just cut them after I cut the shirts apart) and sewing 4 of them together, I am trimming them down to 16 "square blocks. I will soon be a year since he passed so t want to get it completed. I did sort through my stash last week so cleaned that up pretty good. Blessings
❤ Spray bottle: I use mine so that I don’t have to put water in my iron until the very end when I’m ready to block out my quilt. The nest keeps it from shrinking and I usually at start my fabrics first so this just reactivate the starch and gets rid of food lines and miss pressed things. I have learned so much from you. I hope that you have learned from the rest of us too ❤❤❤
love my mister spray bottle. I have one for water and one for my best press I buy in jugs and transfer. The misting to me dampens the fabric without saturating. I like to use it on the seams that won't lay down.
The lemon chiffon blocks make me smile. Yellow is such a happy color. I also loved the similar blue one you made. I am going to make one too. Such a classic and fun way to use scraps. I have several projects to work on. I use bins to keep projects together. I have a couple of sampler quilts, two gifts quilts and a few quilts for me to finish. I see so many pretty quilts, fabrics and patterns that I start but don’t finish. I don’t really mind that I have projects in the works I just love the relaxing time when I do anything related to quilting. The gift quilts, however, I must finish. Learning everyday something new so that’s always a positive. Thank you.
Just last week, I cleared my table space of all the clutter. I put projects together in zip bags then put them in a lidded bin. When I need 1, I can grab and go. I have my more long term projects in individual project boxes in my dedicated sewing room. (I sew in 2 different spaces.)
Hi Pat, the Christmas layer cake is darling. A small correction, they are not candies, but Christmas crackers that you pull at Christmas dinner. When pulled they snap or bang and inside you find a paper hat and a fun miniature gizmo all different in each, plus a little joke. They are a fun Christmas tradition from the UK. 🇨🇦
Yes, yes, yes...all the things with the spray bottles. I have 3. 2 in my laundry room, 1 for H20 and one with starch. I have another in my small sewing space (away from my sewing room). They spray a fine mist without drips and are perfect for me because I never put water in my iron.
Oh my, I'm still organized after switching roomm to the den with the sliding glass door to look out.HOWEVER, I have 4 BOMs going, one personal design, planning one sew together, and altering my skinny granddaughters shorts for school. Taking time to sort into bins I bought seems like work, lol. But, gotta o it, or it will get away from me, right. But it would be more fun to start my Halloween door banner.....
I have several of those mist bottles and love them! I have Best Press in one and plain water in another in the sewing room and I have one in my bathroom to mist my hair (I have curly hair) so I use it to style my hair on days I'm not washing it. I absolutely love the lemon chiffon quilt! 🍋 The polka dot shirt you have on today is lovely.
I have 2 bottles. One is just water and the other is Best Press. I like that they spray a fine mist rather than saturating. I use the starch for small pieces or finished blocks if I want them to more "finished" and to keep them from fraying until I put a top together. The water seems to work nicely on seams but also getting stubborn creases out.
Pat, you can put magnets on the back of your cross-stitch and the wooden board, then it becomes interchangeable. Fat Quarter Shop does this and I think has videos on how to do it.
I love my spray bottle. I use it with distilled water and never use steam in my iron. Ironic though, since I just purchased and multipurpose steam cleaner for my windows, floors, furniture, shower glass, etc. Today I need to finish picking out a row from a wedding quilt and pack up baskets for our boutique at our guild’s quilt show this weekend. And put away some shop hop retail therapy.
Hi - another idea for reusing your boards is to hot glue magnets on the back of the cross stitch mounted piece and also on to the front of the boards - really easy to switch your pieces out
I always wash my fabric on gentle cycle before I cut it. Sometimes just steam doesn’t iron out the wrinkles. So, I spray with water and they come right out. I have a nice spray bottle that I love. Your lemon chiffon is yummy. I’m going to ask my friends for some yellow squares to do one for myself. Love your videos.
Ahhh your cute Halloween Cross-Stitch is almost finished! Lemon Chiffon is looking good. Deck The Halls fabrics are so cute! As you were showing the Home Town Holiday quilt pattern, I focused on the bottom row with the house and trees on each side. What if you spell your name above or below it? It could be like a welcome sign. Just thought I needed to toss that idea at you (you've probably already thought about that yourself). I keep water in my mister bottle. I also have a small Best Press spray bottle that I refill with Best Press. I mostly use water or Best Press to help with getting wrinkles out of fabric before I cut block pieces and for backing fabric. A couple of weekends ago I did a lot of reorganizing in my basement sewing area. It's so easy to make piles and expand when there's no walls to contain 'stuff.' During this reorganizing frenzy I cleaned out 3 bins of projects that I had finished several months ago. I thought to myself "Pat was right--it feels so good to clean out project bins!"
The style of spray bottle you got is awesome! I use mine for Best Pressed. I starch quite a bit when I sew. I like the long release of the starch with the spray bottle you got. How 'bout "Follow-thru Thrusday? I always have too many projects going at once. Just finished two really big ones, and boy, did it feel good to get those done.
Pat I think some people glue magnets to the larger wooden board and metal washers to the top smaller board after you attached the cross stitch and then they can change it out easily and use the larger wooden board all the time.
I have three spray bottles: one with plain water, one with Best Press, and one with diluted spray starch. I also have had issues with leaking irons, so keep them dry.
I don’t use water in my irons so Ihave one bottle for water and one for best press. Can’t wait to see your cross stitch mounted on the board you purchased.
I used to use those exact misters for my starch, but they all leaked. After a couple of other brands still having a drip problem after using, I went back to good old fashioned spray bottles. I hope you have better luck than I did!
I love the fine mist from that type of spray bottle, but I’ve had 2 and they both “broke down” eventually . For the price, I can use cheaper, regular spray bottles. I do miss that fine mist though.
The whole sewing room environment is out of control and needs help 😮 Must clean and reorganize. Thank you for the encouragement. Transformation Thursday 🎉
I have water in my mister to use when the steam isn’t enough. It is great. As for what I need to do-finish my sister in law’s birthday quilt!! Yes her birthday is in May!!! I’m behind!!
Use that same type of sprayer. I spray wrinkles, folds & let dry then dry press. (Also aim at cat if on cutting table , or ironing board, when they aren't covered. He has seen it and the sound is like a hiss warning to get down
I purchased my spray bottle at a discount personal care store in the hair care section. About half three price of the quilting versions. However they something wears out and it will no longer spray. I used mine for misting my orchids and other house plants.
Instead of gluing your stitched piece to the display board, glue a magnet or two to the board. Then glue a washer or two to the back of your stitched piece . That allows you to switch out what you display on the board. Great for seasonal or monthly stitched pieces.
"This Goes Here Thursday" might be an option for putting things away in their more appropriate places. I don't use the steam in my iron. I have found that my irons last longer if I don't, so I use the spray bottle instead. Good job on finishing up the Halloween stitch.
I read that its best to empty a steam iron at the end of the day to avoid spitting, etc. Love using my steam iron, most of the time I do empty out the water. On the other hand my mister is great. Leave Best Press in the original bottle.
Using a steam iron seems to be a no brainer, but read the manual instructions. My Rowenta instructions say to empty the water out when done using the iron, so the residual heat dries out the iron's innards. No spitting problems, but because the water is so hard, I use distilled water. I don't steam the blocks but mist, press, and clappers. I use steam to iron unused fabric, especially after pre-washing fabrics that I was gifted or thrifted. Don't know what's on them or what type of fabric on those.
My beautician uses a spray bottle which gave me the idea .Other spray bottle are too large or to restricting for arthritic hands. The spray covers more surface with finer droplets.
HI Pat, happy to see you today. I see your wearing the earrings I sent you in the Spring. I met You and Weny last September 16 2023. I was so disappointed to find out that my quilt didn't make the cut for the display. I used your fabrices the same as you with the back ground white with tiny black dots. I live in Ohio, and won't be able to make the showing on Saturday. Have a good time maybe next Spring We'll make it to the museum.
My table runner didn’t make it either. So disappointing especially since they commented they needed more wallhangings and table runners. Sad, but I’m enjoying it!!
The spray bottle: I have two of the kind you showed. One is used for best press and one for water. Not all water bottles are the same. This one has such a fine mist. It saves on the amount of Best Press used and it does not leave some areas really wet and some drier. I think you will really like it. My hair dresser has one also for misting the hair! So it has a variety of uses.
If you want to reuse the wooden stands, use Velcro. glue the Velcro prickly pieces to the boards and the soft pieces to the fabrics. Then switch them out.
I don’t starch my fabric before I sew it, so the mister will help get the big creases out. I also don’t like to put water in my irons for steam, so the mister works fine.
I have that exact spray bottle for my iron. I have to set it in a coffee mug because when the water level gets low it's top heavy and falls over. Also, the continuous spray feature slows me down. When I spray, I point, spray, and set down the bottle. This one wants me to spray across, back across, and around the margins, apparently, so sometimes it's still in spray mode when I've already set it down and have the iron on the damp fabric. I may be too impatient...
