✨12 SHINIES✨ Safari Week 2022 | REALLY WEIRD LUCK?? | 1 YEAR OF THENOVALEAGUE 

It all started in the summer of ‘22. Dubnums, a man of many names, was a regular in this establishment. This establishment being TheGremlinGremlin’s live stream. ‘He hadn’t shown his face there in a while,’ was a thought that had crossed most of the Nova League’s minds. The exception being Daniel, because he just doesn’t. It was Safari Week. In fact, it was almost the end of safari week. In the Pokémon world, weeks are canonically 10 days. The day was Thursday, the 7th day of Safari Week. All of a sudden TheGremlinGremlin noticed a chatter that stood out from the rest. His name was something about a sheep, the details lost to time. TheGremlinGremlin recognised him as Dubnums because he had the same string of numbers at the end of his name. The first thing that Dubnums said in that stream was “not me eating 2 year old candy canes and watching you for 15 min before saying anything.” This is what sent the chat spiraling down the pit of insanity. Even after finding the candy canes, already opened and expired, the Iron will that is Dubnums ate them anyway. TheGremlinGremlin tried his hardest to restrain Dubnums, but it was no good. Hearing the topic of bad food, another chatter known as divine_jester said that he had once a macaroni sandwich with leftover macaroni; an attempt to join in on the shared experience of gross food. If only he knew at the time that he had pushed forward the crime of the week. Dubnums was describing the candy canes graphically, with questions from chat here and there, when he realized something. The box of candy canes was from 2019. They were, in fact, three year old, pre-pandemic candy canes. He then noticed that it was a box of twelve, and was now reduced to one. He sent in proof of him eating them to The Nova League’s discord, just to prove that he was “on the level.'' He opened the last one and ate it in record time. Shenanigans ensued from there. Dubnums drew TheGremlinGremlin from memory and more, but then food was brought back up. Dubnums, now addicted to candy canes, went to search for more. He was unsuccessful, but he did find an old Scooby-Doo Graham Cracker on the floor. He proceeded to eat it. Another chatter by the name MrGameDealer found more 3 year old candy canes and proceeded to eat those. This encouraged chatter BouldahDash to look for old food, along with all other chatters. XanyXatu found two year old cheese wiz, Dubnums ate room temperature ice cream residue that was at least 6 months old, BouldahDash found some candy that was put through the washer and dryer and an old fortune cookie that was bendy. He opened it to get the fortune and instead of breaking. It just bent. In the meantime, as everyone was gathering old food, TheGremlinGremlin and other members in the NovaLeague were going insane due to the fact that, if their chatters died on their watch, it would be on them. TheGremlinGremlin was at his wits end. While Dubnums was trying to convince new first time chatters to eat old food, the oldest food of the night was eaten. XanyXatu ate ice cream cones, from 2000. More old food was eaten but eventually the chat calmed down, but not before driving TheGremlinGremlin insane. Not to mention, he was at 12,150 Random Encounters while looking for a shiny. However, in an attempt to get the old food going again, BouldahDash used a picture of pork chops that said “Use by 2020.” Of course, this was an old picture, but he said that he just took it and was gonna eat them. This was how it transitioned from “EAT OLD FOOD,” to “EAT RAW FOOD.” This got chatters to eat things like several year old hot pockets and a single unaged corn dog. However, no one actually did this for real. At this point we were just trying to drive The NovaLeague insane, However, a chatter named MrGameDealer took a bite out of a raw chicken burger. Not much happened after this, but whenever Dubnums was there for a shiny reaction, he would send a message to RU-vid. This is his message, EAT OLD FOOD EAT RAW FOOD

The maths in this is actually incorrect. The odds are not 5/8192 because that would be like saying if you did an encounter on 8192 games at the same time, you'd have a 100% chance of finding a shiny which just isn't true. If the odds were 5/8192, that'd be like rolling an 8192-sided die with 5 faces that give you a shiny, but as you said, you are rolling five 8192-sided dice with only one shiny face each. This means that the chances you get a shiny increase logarithmically the more devices you have rather than linearly which is what I'm assuming you guys meant by being "multiplicative." Either way, yes, your odds do increase quite a bit, however, instead of jumping from a 0.012207% chance to a 0.061035% chance (about 1/8192 to 1/1638) it's actually a 0.06102% chance (about 1/1639). This isn't a lot because five systems is so close to one but as the number of systems grow larger, the chances of rolling for a shiny on one 8192-sided die with X shiny faces as opposed rolling for a shiny on X 8192-sided dice grows further apart. For example, at 8192 encounters, if you were rolling the one die where all faces are shiny now (because it has 8192 faces and 8192 faces give you a shiny) you would be guaranteed a shiny. But in actuality, you'd be rolling 8192 of the same 8192-sided dice, each with only one face that grants you a shiny Pokémon. Because of this, the odds are actually a lot lower at about a 63.214301% chance of finding a shiny within those 8192 encounters. If you have a graphing calculator handy, I'd suggest you put in the following graphs. Be sure to set the window for X (encounters) to 0 - 8192 and the window for Y (percentage chance of a shiny) to 0 - 100. (You can also put this algorithm into a program like I did and have the calculator count your encounters and show you the chances you'd find a shiny by then at the same time.) The graph representing the chances with one die: Y = ( X / 8192 ) * 100 The graph representing the chances with five dice: Y = ( 1 - ( 1 - ( 1 / 8192 ) ) ^X ) * 100 For those of you interested, I'll give an explanation of the algorithm. We know 1/8192 is the odds of finding a shiny for every encounter so let's mark that as S for shiny odds. That'll make the algorithm look like this: Y = ( 1 - ( 1 - S ) ^X ) * 100 That got rid of one set of parentheses. Now if we start from the innermost parentheses, what we see is [ 1 - S ]. If 1/8192 is the chances we get a shiny, then 1 - 1/8192 is the chances that we don't get a shiny or 8191/8192. Then we raise this to the power of X, the number of encounters, and this multiplies that [ 1 - S ] by itself to determine the chances that you don't find a shiny within in that many encounters, whether it be exactly at that amount, or two hundred encounters before. The reason we can't just raise 1/8192 to the power of X is because that's calculating the chances that we get the shiny on every encounter. That means that when we subtract that from 1, the output would be the chances we don't get X amount of shinies is a row rather than the chances we don't get a single shiny. The rest is simple. Since now we have the chance that we don't find a shiny within X encounters with [ ( 1 - S ) ^X ], all we do is subtract that from 1 in order to get the chances that we do find a shiny within X encounters, and then multiply by 100 to convert it to the percentage rate. P.S. I have not taken a stats class yet and I feel that this begins to impede on that area of mathematics so if any stats wizards see something wrong and want to critique my work, please do. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TEDxTalks. 😃

Your friend is right btw. The odds are multiplicative. If it was additive then you could guarantee a shiny if you simultaneously encountered a Pokémon in 8192 games. The odds of getting a shiny are 1-(8191/8192)^(number of games) btw.

I mean, for the record you are essentially rolling a 5-sided die and landing on Platinum 4 times in a row. I'll take a more conservative approach and say the interesting bit wasn't the first encounter, but the fact that the next three encounters were all on the same game (essentially you weren't aiming for Platinum until you had already hit it once). That being said, (1/5)^3=1/125, so not crazy crazy but pretty crazy.
