In many Chinese donghua, the main character (MC) often faces mistreatment from women who disrespect and even physically harm them. It’s frustrating to see the MC endure such treatment without standing up for themselves. Ideally, the MC should assert their self-respect and retaliate when necessary. However, the prevalent narrative often portrays them as passive recipients of mistreatment. Perhaps future donghua could explore more empowering character arcs, allowing the MC to break free from this cycle and assert their dignity.

It's not so much the pacing, which is acknowledged and complained about in-story, it's that they don't give me a reason to care about the hero. If they fail to make me care about the hero, they also fail to make me care about the story that hero is telling me, so I just can't be bothered to keep up with the pacing. It's a chore to force yourself to keep up while you're still also looking for a reason to care about the hero. Two episodes in and I couldn't describe his personality for you. 🤷‍♀️ Is he a cold-blooded killer who just wants to live and maybe save a girl we also have no reason to care about from other cold-blooded killers, or is he a former cold-blooded killer slogging his way to redemption? Does he actually have a noble motivation? Will he grow a noble motivation? Or is he entirely selfish with no motivation to improve and we are supposed to care just because he's the hero, his artwork is pretty, and we saw some chick for a blip? Whichever it is, I don't really care enough to watch further and find out.
