Many people collect the Vintage Sports Cards of specific players they love, which is something I'm considering doing! I want to know who you collect in your personal collection, and who do you think I should PC?
Some of the options I'm thinking about include:
Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, Sandy Koufax, Pete Rose, Frank Robinson, Johnny Bench, Nolan Ryan, and more! Help me make a decision!

Personally any player, any brand, any year, any card I can collect out there is what I collect. Basically a little bit of everything If I may! Thanks for sharing this fun vid!

I’m writing this halfway into the video. I’m actually doing Mccovey, Drysdale and Gibson. All of them really cool and not huge expensive ( Gibson is a bit more pricey). You also know I’m a HUGE HUGE HUGE Nolan Ryan guy. Side note Catfish Hunter answered a question about the Reggie candy bar. He said “When you unwrap it, it tells you how it is”

As a big Yankees fan Ive started my PC of Aaron Judge. He’s going to go down as one of best Yankees of all time (if stays healthy), and is a fan favorite. I’m trying to collect numbered refractors of /150 or less if possible. Cheers

That’s very cool! I like the specificity of what you’re going to collect of his! Well done!

Nice! You better have some deep pockets! Haha, actually, you can probably get a lot of their base cards in their later years pretty cheap.

Love the idea of a player run, always thought about doing it with Gibby, but haven’t yet! For you, though, if it’s not going to be Mike Lavalliere, I don’t know what you’re thinking, ha! I think Ernie Banks is a great choice! He would be top 3 among your mentioned options for me, along with Nolan, and a guy you might fairly dismiss as a bit vanilla, Brooks Robinson. However, Brooks does seem universally hailed as a helluva guy, and of course, his defensive wizardry can’t be overstated. I guess I will have to get the Substack app to get in on the Chat, I didn’t know that was a thing! Anyway, really look forward to seeing the progress of an awesome run of Mr. Cub! Thanks for sharing, David.

Gibson would be a good one to do it with, since he’s a pitcher, and his cards are mostly in the inexpensive vintage years. I feel like I’m going to do Ernie Banks… then I might follow it with Frank Robinson! Years from now. Hahahaha Yeah, I don’t know what it is about Brooks, I’m just indifferent to him as a collector.

I'm also going to collect Glenn Abbott. I share his last name, and because of that, as a kid, I always noticed him. There's a podcast I listen to, "Back When There Was Baseball", and they interviewed Glenn. I really enjoyed the interview, seems like a stand-up guy. I'd love to meet him, getting his autograph would be cool. Jim Abbott as well. Bombo Rivera, he signed an autograph for me when he was with the Twins, he was signing autographs by the seats down the 1st base line at Tiger Stadium, my friend and I each managed to get one. My friend and I became instant Bombo Rivera fans, and we kept shouting "Bombo! Bombo! Bombo!" from the stands.

Banks is a great one to collect. I’ve collected many HOF player runs over the years. Out of all of them the funnest for me is my complete Will Clark collection. He is my absolute favorite player of all time as a Giants fanatic who grew up in Northern California in the 80’s living and dying with my Giants. I’ve got about 95% of his cards from 1986 to 1994 (I collect Giants years only). I found that collecting players I have a deep nostalgic connection with is the most rewarding versus the amazing players I never saw play. If you’ve got a player like this from your past maybe consider that? Typically when I collect a player because the hobby has dictated everyone should have their cards it’s not the same. Good luck on your journey!

Thanks for watching and commenting! Will the Thrill was fun to watch! For me, since I lived in a few places and had several teams, it made choosing tough. Plus, I want to choose someone from ‘50s/‘60s, just so I didn’t have to collect hundreds of ‘90s junk wax. Too many manufacturers for me. I like Banks because it’s relatively finite. Thank you, my friend!
@patrickimhoff9961

Ernie Banks is a solid choice and fits your Texas locale now as he was born in Dallas. That said, I would also offer up Willie Stargell as a possible choice. Not the top guy in Pittsburgh, but a HOF player, 2 x World Series Champ, MVP, etc. Plus his 1963 Topps rookie card, SGC 6, can be found for under $400, which while expensive, is reasonable for vintage cards. The downside though, is it is the 1963 card with the 4 floating heads.

Great video Mr David Gonos. I would choose Nolan Ryan and Reggie Jackson in the '60s and if I had to choose the '70s I would choose Mike Schmidt and George Brett. The '50s I can't afford. The one guy, I PC is from the '90s and his name is Reggie Sanders. I went to school with him in Florence, South Carolina. Have a good Friday and Weekend coming up Mr David Gonos and ✌️ to you my friend.

@SPICY_BEAR

*Made this comment before watching the whole video. I see you're not a fan of the guy? 🤷 In my opinion, he can be grumpy because of how MLB did him dirty with the lifetime ban. Anyone probably would be, if they had to endure a lifetime punishment for something? But he's one of the biggest advocates for baseball, and in all of the videos/interviews I've seen of him on RU-vid, he seems like a funny and easy going person, someone down to earth and approachable? Agree with you about the horrible floating heads card. The '63 Pete Rose is a ton of money in the higher grades like PSA 7 or 8! 😳 I've got one of the '62 floating heads cards, one of the leaders cards with Clemente. But only because it was cheap! 😄
@DavidGonos

Hahahahaha no problem, Pete Rose is just kind of an aggravating character.

Ernie Banks is a good idea. I’m doing a run on Frank Robinson, trying to get them in a 5 or higher. Except his rookie, where I may go down to a 3.5. I have a good group of them so far, I’m doing AS cards as well and will eventually grab the league leaders and dual players too. It’s a fun project!
@DavidGonos
@DavidGonos 4 дня назад
Man, Frank Robinson, what a great player to choose. First black manager. I believe NL President at one point. Three teams retired his number and put up statues of the guy! If I were a fan of any of those teams, I would collect him for sure.

Great idea David!!! As a UFC guy not something I could go as far back as you, I could only go back to the 90's, I'm actually working on a display case of MMA legends and going to put a name plate on it titled on the shoulders of legends. If I ever did baseball being from Wisconsin it would definitely be Robin Yount!! Great video, have an amazing weekend!!!

I'm thinking about focusing on Al Kaline. I already have a couple of his cards so I have a bit of a jump. His rookie card will be expensive, though. I may also focus on Alan Trammell, or maybe Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. Fidrych will be easier since he didn't play that long.
@DavidGonos
@DavidGonos 4 дня назад
Kaline, like Banks, is one of those strangely lower valued guys that’s in the same rank as the ultra-collectable guys. Very cool! Let me know how your collection works out!

I was going to say Clemente but that's a biased decision my part. Because I'm trying to do his run as well. I think a player that you didn't mention his cards are very affordable will be Tom Seaver
