College dropout here, unemployed, Age 26, and a self-taught concept artist. I decided to self-teach myself concept art. It was hard and I wasn't gaining much progress. I came to the decision to find a mentor. I did a simple google search and found a place in Manhattan, NY. It was there I found a mentor who would be a friend and my instructor in 2D and 3D concept art. My mentor is South Korean, and I am african american but he said, if I paid for the lesson, he will make me a karate kid in art. I followed in his footsteps. After 1 year of rigorous study, my art skills went from a lousy 2-3/10 to a 7/10. Most people don't make it this far in concept art, but it was my effort and eagerness to learn that helped me advance to such a level in a short period of time. I am currently building a portfolio to apply to companies all around the world. Btw, I love your sketches, keep at it. Your age doesn't matter. The skill level is what separates the novices from the pros.

@@goro_vl390 & Catbird House Same age 34 almost 35, very similar story. Been drawing my whole life save the last 7 years. Relationships and life put my art on the back burner. I thought my creative life was over and accepted that part of my life was past and gone. Too many failures that I never got back up from. But recently I've been craving to create again. Today I picked up a cheap ass tablet and a photoshop free trial. I started drawing/painting again for the first time in all those years. I spent almost 6 hours painting/setting up my old workflow. I haven't felt this good in YEARS, just to create again. I ran across this video and like Goro said its so inspiring that I'm not alone in our creative journeys. That we are putting pen to paper (or pen and tablet) again, that the only thing that really matters is we're creating again and moving forward to becoming better artists. Sorry for the LONG comment, but sincerely thank you Kaitlyn for showing us we are not alone.

Even if I'm a 19 years old guy, I often feel inadequate about my skills because I never started it due to my bad habits and laziness. I started drawing since 2017 and stop doing it somewhere 2020 and start again from 2022 to today. I feel anxious or upset that I didn't have the same level of other professional artist who are the same age as mine, but I stumble upon videos or people like you who started late whether there are artist or not. 3:08 a note on these painting being concept art: concept art is used to explain construction and finer details for later used by other artists (or the same artist). An illustration, as seen here, is the final product after reference research, concept, iteration, and touch up has been complete. I would argue concept art is upstream of all productions to include illustration.

I love drawing however I'm not particularly ~spectacular~ in it so I always get frustrated when things dont end up how I want it to be. Now I'm coming around doing digital art and I realized that every other great artist out there had to work HARD; nobody was born with talent and skills right away. As I'm doing it right now, I feel more relaxed and enjoyed without the pressure of having it to be perfect every time. I only have to learn something everytime I try and can only be great if I keep practicing. We are never too late to start. Art is not supposed to be rushed; it's supposed to be enjoyed by the artist foremost the audience enjoyment is only a bonus.

Man. I vibe with u so much. Im 29, i used to draw a lot throughout my childhood and teenage years then come the phase of reaching adulthood where i had to deal with life, similar toxic relationships which drained all my energy and creativity for many years, then dealing with myself, my toxic workplace for another few years and finally realizing what i really wanted in the end. It was a decade long journey, but i eventually realized my passion is in this, where i feel true happiness when im creating art. Id say we may be late in our art progress compared to the young people, but life experiences and stories u went through are an important aspect in an artist ability to grow as well. The long hard detour we took to reach where we are now shaped our perseverance and persistence in achieving great things in the future :)

46 this year! Been drawing on and off since I was 20 or so but never really gave myself permission to dive in completely before this past year. Glad I decided to, I’m already 1000% better at drawing thanks to drawing even just a little every day (almost) for six or seven months. Very excited to see where this road may lead me, and it’s also just a lot of fun along the way.

I'm 29 as well, getting back into art after more than 15 years. Only now I have the money and time to dedicate to this professionally. So is all or nothing now. Thank you for sharing this and keep us motivated.

Love this video so much and I rarely comment. Plus I really love your art style! Your story sounds similar to mine in multiple ways and is nice to know others in a close age range exist. I was into art (mainly drawing/sketching) a lot in middle school and continued it into high school, but with personal problems outside of school going on I lost faith and confidence in the art I was doing and just stopped for almost a decade. Late 2021 I decided to try digital art out because I would follow so many artists on twitter doing so and bought this cheap amazon drawing pad that was awkward to use, but didn't stop. I didn't have any art from my younger years to compare to because I (regretfully) hated it and wanted it gone, so this time I have saved every thing I have finished just to see my progress. It has been such a journey this past year making art and seeing the progress. Learning things on my own seriously like the fundamentals, shading, color theory, etc. I have no idea where I want to take my art level to, but it has been a fun hobby I am glad I revived. Watching your video was wonderful and made me want to type my own story out there. Gained a sub and best of luck on your own journey! To anyone else that reads this I hope you never feel to old or that falling behind feeling when it comes to your art. Everyone starts somewhere and learns different skills at different speeds. Love yourself and your art. The art that you make is unique to you and worth so much to yourself and others around you. Take care :)

I really like this video - you are honest and straight forward - watching you draw while you shared your background and explained what you want from art was really motivating. I'm turning 25 this year and I'm honestly worried I'm no good for my age - but videos like yours help me realize age has nothing to do with my art and at the end of the day its about the effort and care I put into my work. I look forward to watching your journey and I'm excited for your next video

Thanks for this I started studying art when I was 26 I’ll be 31 this month I’ve been terrified I’ll never “make it “ that I’ll never get to be an illustrator as my career it’s too late for me…but I keep pushing I keep learning and growing.. I’m still not there yet but everyday I show up try again and get a little closer someday I hope I climb down the other side of that mountain and make plenty of friends along the way hopefully making the trail a little easier for those who come after me

Vincent van Gogh started painting at 27 without a formal training but when he did started painting.. he did so for 12 hours every day.. it sounds like an obsession but in 2 years period.. he became one of the best paint artists of all time he had no talent.. he built one

First of all, I love your gesture work and how you utilize curves to build up the structure of each figure you draw/ sketch. I quit drawing entirely in high school due to being teased and bullied over it. I moved on my with my life and now that I'm in my 20s, I've decided to really look back and star drawing again. I basically started from scratch at 23 (am 25 now) and don't feel like I've come very far yet in my art abilities what with life, balancing a fulltime job, and squeezing in time to practice whenever I can. I wish you the best in your art journey, wherever that may take you!

Comparison, especially with age, is one of my worst habits when it comes to art. I think part of it is that I used to be in that age range where my art was just "good enough" that people would notice and compliment that I'm drawing good for my age. As I'm turning 20 in a couple of months, fear of not being as good at art for my age or feeling less good at art because I'm not the child prodigy really gets to me. Comparison is a hard beast to get over, but I'm hoping to slowly focus on refining my art instead of seeing how it is deficit to others' creations.

Your story made me cry, as someone who is trying to put myself out there as an artist. I am much younger than you but you draw much better than I do 😅 I feel I can relate you in many ways. I worked since I was 16, I’m close to being 22 and I want to pursue art. I also understand unhealthy relationships. Thank you for making me feel normal, and I hope you know many people understand these struggles as well. ❤

Definitely on a similar path, started taking art more seriously about 18 months ago after working hard with a psychologist on some other issues. Purely painting for personal hobby/joy but very much loving it and rapidly making progress self teaching.

I turn 31 this year, and I quit my full time job to get a part time job and follow my dreams to go to art school. It's a particularly interesting challenge because I've never worked traditionally, and have been doing digital art exclusively ever since middle school. (Age 11) It's nice to know there are other artists out there in a similar boat. It's funny, because I don't care what I end up doing (Character Design, Prop Designer (Anim.), Concept Art etc.) I just want to create.

I am in love with this, I know this is kinda weird, but I already felt like it's too late to start my art journey even though I'm not even 18 yet. Imma start drawing daily again. I have been sort of scared to keep on drawing, the fear I have probably is that I will never be good enough. Eh, we'll see.

It definitely does take time to learn everything and also get overwhelmed by how much information there is, cause I struggle with that too. But it all boils down to actually having that drive and want to learn the fundamentals. Just do it in small increments, have fun and take your time! You hear from artists all the time saying that you will be studying and learning for as long as you are creating art.

I was addicted to weed for 12 years. I had anxiety and was depressed from the lack of ability to feel pleasure or joy unless I was high, and even then, it was fleeting. Left me with no motivation to do anything that fulfilled me. I always wanted to be a comic creator. One day, I just got on my knees in my bathroom and prayed to Jesus christ and begged him to free me from my addiction so I can live again. I'm almost a full year sober, and about 4 or 5 months ago, I began taking my art seriously, and my progress is so noticeable that I've gained real confidence. I even have a good deal of content written for my durst comic series, and my understanding of form and volume as well as color and perspective are just booming. I'm 31 going on 32 and it's never too late. It helps that I was blessed with a very clear and vivid imagination since a child. I never have an issue coming up with ideas or designs I simply had no discipline or motivation to learn and develop my ability to draw. Now I'm free and ready to tackle my dreams

My story is obviously not the same as yours but I am 28 at the moment, 29 later this year and I’m really just starting to try to be consistent and serious with my work. It’s still a Hobby for me but I want it to be a serious one (if that makes any sense). Work definitely gets in the way a lot and my lack of energy but I’m trying to push through. Anyway thank you for the transparency and I would love to see your growth. New subscriber for sure ❤

I watched this thinking how similar your journey to art was to mine. Drawing and painting makes me feel happier. I recently looked back at my art when I was in my teens, it was embarrassing but I saw how much I've improved more than 10 years later. My parent thinks you need to be naturally gifted to draw, not seeing my whole art journey not believing I can find work as an artist. I have been feeling low these past week thinking I was late into drawing, if only I got serious sooner. However, watching this and reading the comments lifted up my spirits, as I'm not alone. This was a great video, and I wish you a successful art journey :)!

I’m 44 and I’m starting again, I have done some commissioned work for the past few years, but really want to step up my creative game.
