As a little girl in the 80's in north dakota I would find Dames rocket in the yard all the time. It is very memorable. Isn't that such a thing. It must have been planted by my great great grandma Anna. She Evan planted roses and they are almost 100 years old.

I winter sow EVERYTHING!! With toddlers and middle school boys it’s to difficult stay consistent for indoor plants! We start all of our flowers, vegetables, and herbs with winter sowing! Sunflowers are always the first and biggest sprouts for me! We also use a drill for the holes in the bottom and a dremmil saw to cut the jugs! One other thing if you have a ton of snails and slugs like we do here in zone 7 we put a coffee filter on the bottom of the jug and then add the soil! Tag inside and out just in case your garden marker doesn’t hold up! Happy Sowing!

I attempted to WS for the first time last winter. I had 55 jugs and used 70 different seeds ranging from Amaranth to Zinnias. Only 4 varieties didn't make it (I can only recall Cosmos as being one of the four failures). My favorite seed to WS is Sweet peas. I usually start them indoors but won't bother doing that anymore since they do so well in the jugs. Last year was a learning year hence the 55 jugs. This year I'm only growing what I truly want in my garden so am only using 12 jugs. I live in zone 5b Colorado

I’m in Colorado too and trying WS for the first time. Curious where you put the jugs? Better in southern exposure or does it matter? Currently, I have some on a small utility rack next to my shed facing west. I did a few vegis and rest flowers. I’m new to gardening so stand a lot of learning :). 👨‍🌾 I’m also doing the grow along and loving this community!

I heard that you should have them in the shade through the winter so they don’t sprout too early, thinking “it’s warm now”, then get killed as tender seedlings when it freezes again.

First time here too ,( in 5b Atlantic Canada) . Finding jugs was my problem... we don't get our milk in jugs. What I did have tho was a collection of apple cider jugs... actually sturdier than milk jugs. Also rotisserie chicken containers and peach "baskets" are now a clear plastic with attached!!! Lids .... no taping needed and they already have holes in both the top and bottom. And I also put mine in milk crates to make it easier to haul out where I wanted them (we have 2,3,4 ft of snow in the yard)

One of my favorites to winter sow is anise hyssop. It’s a perennial, mint family (but doesn’t spread by runners). It is a cut for foliage and filler, great pollinator plant, flowers first year from seed and is super reliable germinator. It reseeds somewhat in my garden, but not aggressively so.

I started 57 winter sowing jugs last winter and had great success. I use clear Gorilla tape to seal them and also top them with vermiculite. I also put a label inside that is used later when planted in the ground. Perennials such as Asclepias, Scabiosa Fama, Penstemon, Delphinium, Echinacea, Foxglove and Lobelia work well. For annuals I grew Bells of Ireland, poppies, calendula, bachelor buttons, corn cockle, phlox, big quaking grass, snapdragons, clary sage, clarkia, dianthus, nigella, alyssum, stock and rudbeckia. Believe it or not, I had great success winter sowing sweet peas. I was hesitant at first because everybody said they don’t like their roots disturbed but I just split in chunks then thin as needed. Other things I had success with are foxglove, callendula, nasturtium, parsley, hollyhock, bok choy, lettuce & spinach. For late winter/early spring sowing I had great success with tomato, peppers, eggplant, zinnias, sunflowers, celosia & beans. Don’t be deceived if your seedlings don’t look that great when it’s time to plant them on the ground. They catch up quickly and are very hardy. Good luck!

I have winter sown my baby's breath and rudbeckia from the grow along with you. I sow baby's breath every year this way and it has always been my best performer in winter sowing. Bravo! Welcome to the club! Brussels and broccoli are terrific for winter sowing too!

I did about 50 different things last year. Artichokes did great. Any perennial. Cosmos, snapdragons, straw flowers, pincushion and many more. Lots of veggies also.

Just trying winter sewing for the first time also. I am attempting liatris seeds because I have so many that if they do not work It will be okay because I will have some going in trays as well. Fingers crossed!

Nicole....If you just write a number on each jug, keep a list in a notebook of what each number is. Example...#1 is Bells of Ireland, #2 is Echinacea...etc.

It’s my first year so I don’t have any success to share but I planted- several different annual poppies, milkweed, Dara, sweet peas, Larkspur, and bachelor’s button.

I am just along for the ride. I am in zone 5b but have never had a tremendous success with winter sowing. Hopefully I will pick up some tips and tricks to try again! Love all the ideas everyone has.

I was everything!! My sunflowers do amazing because when I direct sow the birds get them before they sprout. WS lets me transplant so the birds aren't interested. Good luck, I think you will be amazed😎
