A little tip what I found out with rock paintings is to remove the tape instantly after you painted or when the color is still wet so it won't ruin the picture by ripping the paint or your individual lines. If that's not a good option apply Mod podge on top of the base color and each layer of paint. Mod podge really helps to seal the color in place and it's great for water proofing should you want to put your painted rocks outside.

WHEN BLENDING.... tip.... Brush the lighter colour into the darker colour.... For example, start in yellow, blending toward orange. Versus starting in orange blending toward yellow. And start with less paint, you can always add a bit more as you go.
No they aren't. They're using quite a good amount to cover up the whole thing to create a masterpiece, as an artist we do this. Sometimes I go through a lot to make a bigger sized canvas. Us Artists know what we are doing so don't judge us.
