This video demonstrates how to measure impedance from 10Hz to 10MHz using a Tektronix P6042 Current Probe, Siglent SDS1104X-E Oscilloscope with Bode Plot II, and a Siglent SDG2042X function generator. I show examples of impedance plots of resistors, inductors, speakers, and standard and polarized capacitors. The results are good from 10Hz through 1MHz and usable to 10Mhz. The speaker impedance measurement shows how the impedance and resonant point of the peak changes with it's physical location.

The 6042 was replaced by the AM503 and P6302 in the mid 70's. These had a max bandwidth of only 50MHz. The P6022 current probe has a 150MHz bandwidth. However, the P6022 doesn't measure DC, but that may not be of concern. If you are concerned about the capacitance of the current probe, you can connect it on the ground side of the circuit where the voltage is zero, so capacitance has no effect. The current is the same. The voltage probe ground clip needs to be on the supply ground (after the current probe) otherwise some ground current could flow through the scope probe. fyi, I was a designer the Tek current probes. Using the proper ferrite core with several turns of wire, you can replace the current probe and get a higher bandwidth.

Hi Chris Thanks for making this video. When I open your pdf file, I see some Impedance - Frequency measurement on the screen of your scope (pag 2 of the pdf file). How could you get that on the scope screen ? Or did you only create the Z Impedance curves in a spreadsheet ? I have the same scope and function generator and like to measure the Impedance curve of some piezo, but I do not have a current probe which will be usable up to 1 MHz. I like to use a resistor in serie with the piezo to measure the voltage over this 100 Ohm resistor to get the current which is flowing to the piezo and back. How can I create the Impedance curve with this kind of set up ?
