I love Taiwan, and I love to listen to Minan songs. I am closer to Taiwan in culture. In my younger days, I communicated with my parents in Hokkien dialect (minan). I have difficulty understanding Mandarin.
When I was in Manchester for the shutdown challenge workshop, I came across the group of Chinese in the park walking towards the China town, I was surprised to hear they spoke Hokkien. I thought that they were tourists and began to speak to them where they were heading to. They told me they had resided here 100 over years ago. The community continued to keep their mother tongue avidly so that it would not disappear. They brought me to the restaurant for me to taste the Minnan foods and asked me why I was here. They were friendly towards me when I had conversation with them in my dialect which they could understand well. It is good to know more languages including Chinese dialects where we learned during out kampung and primary school days. Otherwise, you would not able to catch up.😊
