The place name of Ximending comes from the Japanese colonial period. At that time, most residents lived in Taipei City, and the Ximen area was their resting place. In 1896, the first theater "Tokyo Pavilion" was built here. In 1922, it was officially named "Ximending" "Town" is the name.
In the early days of Ximending, cinemas were the main commercial activity. After the Nationalist Government moved to Taiwan in 1949, a large amount of money poured into the area. In addition to cinemas, department stores and other entertainment venues appeared one after another. After the completion of the Chunghwa Mall, , Ximending has become the largest commercial and entertainment center in the country.
In the 1980s of the Republic of China, Taipei's commercial and entertainment activities gradually moved to the East District. Until the MRT Bannan Line was completed, Zhonghua Road was transformed into Taipei's Champs Elysees Avenue under the planning of the Taipei City Government, with large and small squares and event spaces springing up like mushrooms after a rain. Every weekend and holiday, people gather here to engage in cultural, artistic, sports, music performances and other activities, which once again brings business opportunities and crowds back to the West District.
Today's Ximending not only witnesses history, but is also the leader of a new generation of popular culture. Many nostalgic middle-aged and elderly people reminisce about the past here, and even the younger generation dressed in trendy clothes compete here. Two completely different lifestyles are here. Communication meets the different needs of ethnic groups.
There are five gates in Taipei Old City: East Gate (Jingfu Gate), West Gate (Baocheng Gate), South Gate (Lizheng Gate), Xiaonan Gate (Chongxi Gate), and North Gate (Chengen Gate). They are the gates of the Qing Dynasty. During the Guangxu period, it was built during the Liu Mingchuan period to encourage businessmen to invest in building houses and form streets in Taipei City for vigorous development.
The North Gate, also known as the Cheng'en Gate, faces north and means "inheriting Tian's grace". It is the only remaining original city gate of Minnan-style architecture in Taipei. Its location is so important that in modern times it is the hub landmark of the "West District" of old Taipei. During the Qing Dynasty, it was the core gateway from the "city" to "Dadaocheng". Therefore, the Western District Gateway Plan takes the North Gate as the core and connects the surrounding Japanese-controlled "Ministry of Railways", "Taipei Post Office", "Osaka Trading Company", "Mitsui Warehouse", as well as the "Futai Street Western-style Buildings" and "Machinery" during the Qing collar period. "Bureau"...a group of historic sites, forming a "face-like" historical attractions network, and creating the image of the Travel Plaza in front of Taipei Station as the national gateway, connecting the axis from Taipei Station to the North Gate.
