Hello everyone, I'm Wanderer Without Bounds. Today, instead of going out to shoot, I'll edit some footage I captured earlier this year with my phone.
Beijing, the largest city in northern China, and the capital of China, is a renowned historical and cultural city. Dating back to around 700,000 years ago, the area of Zhoukoudian in Beijing witnessed the presence of the "Peking Man" primitive human group. With a history of over 3,000 years since its establishment, Beijing has been a major stronghold and regional center in northern China since the unification of China by Emperor Qin Shi Huang in 221 BC. Since 888 AD, Beijing has successively served as the secondary capital of the Liao Dynasty, the capital of the Jin Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty's capital Dadu, and the capital of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Nanluoguxiang is located in the Dongcheng District of Beijing, built around the same time as the Yuan Dynasty. It runs north to south, starting from Gulou East Street in the north and ending at Ping'an Street in the south, spanning 787 meters long and 8 meters wide. During the Ming Dynasty, it belonged to the Zhaohui, Hui, Jing, and Gongfang areas and was called Luoguo Alley. In the Qing Dynasty, in the fifteenth year of the Qianlong reign (1750), it belonged to the Xianghuang Banner and was named Nanluoguxiang. During the Cultural Revolution, it was temporarily renamed "Huihuang Street" but later restored its original name.
Nanluoguxiang has 16 orderly arranged hutongs on both sides, forming a fishbone shape. Overlooking the entire neighborhood resembles a centipede, hence it's also known as Centipede Street. Famous spots within Nanluoguxiang include Yuer Hutong, Maoer Hutong, among others, renowned for their numerous ancient quadrangle dwellings and residences of celebrities.
What I'm describing today, Nanluoguxiang, is a microcosm of old Beijing hutongs, where the authentic architectural style of old Beijing is preserved. It has now become a famous tourist attraction, attracting nostalgic individuals like me every day, as well as young people exploring the culture of old Beijing hutongs. Visitors from outside Beijing also come here to understand the cultural landscape and stories of Beijing. What's even more precious is that it attracts many foreigners who want to learn more about China, Beijing, experience its history and culture, and explore its quaint alleyways and quadrangle courtyards.
