Interesting. I think Gunther Schuler would classify this piece as Third Stream"- that is to say it utilizes components from both the jazz and classical styles. Wonderful soloists. Great use of all the sections of the band to develop composer's ideas. Now it makes sense to have a band of this size with all it's power and tonal qualities and components and power skillfully utilized. Kudos to the composer and the director for programming it.
Interesting! I think Gunther Schuler would have classified this piece as "Third Stream"-thet is to say using thematic development of ostenatos and repeated rhythmic phrases . It borders on both jazz and classical traditions. Wonderful solos. One of the few examples where a composer utilizes all the various sections in the band to develop his ideas and compositional techniques. Now it makes sense to use this size band-use it and all it's parts and power. kudos to the composer and the director for programming it.
