its because the Toyota and HKS project,as you know 86 is a new car,so they ask HKS to research more so HKS can made new parts for the 86 so Toyota and HKS will gain more profit,thanks to their development program. as for D1,i personally choose Altezza,because its has a stable power and easy control,while the 86,seems to have a,power and suspension problem,as you can see in this video,the 86 runs outside the Suzuka turn.
if taniguchi keep driving the altezza he could have make it to the final i don't know why he switch to the new ft-86 just because he wants to feel the different between the altezza and the ft-86
