ー熊野市ー
三重県南部に位置する熊野市は、世界遺産「紀伊半島の霊場と参詣道」、いわゆる「熊野古道」のうち伊勢神宮から熊野三山を目指す「伊勢路」上にあります。伊勢から幾多の峠道を越え、速玉大社へ向かう最後の峠となる世界遺産「松本峠」には、大量の雨から参詣道を守るために築かれた石畳の階段が今なお美しく残り、誰もが先人の英知と技術力を感じます。苔むした石畳を一歩一歩登り、風や沢の音、鳥の声に心が鎮まります。峠から少し寄り道をすると、300余年の歴史を誇る「熊野大花火大会」の会場でもある世界遺産「七里御浜」が22kmの弧を描き、左手には熊野灘、右手には神聖な山々、そしてそれを覆う空の広さに心奪われることでしょう。峠を越えて進めば、頭上25mから熊野灘に向かって吠える奇岩「獅子岩」、巨大な磐座に神々の母イザナミノミコトが眠る日本最古の神社「花の窟」、熊野灘の荒波と急激な地盤隆起によって作り出された名勝「鬼ヶ城」など、文化的・地質学的にも重要な名所が熊野古道沿いに続き、人々が古から自然信仰の熊野を目指して巡礼した理由が改めて理解できます。
更に、海側から山側へ分岐して本宮大社を目指せば、一目千枚・1340枚の棚田が広がる「丸山千枚田」や、続日本100名城に選ばれ人気が高まっている国の史跡「赤木城跡」など、人と自然の共存の歴史に心奪われるでしょう。
ーKumano cityー
Set in the dense forests of the Kii Mountains, three sacred sites - Yoshino and Omine, Kumano Sanzan, and Koyasan - are linked by pilgrimage routes, and surrounding forests form a cultural landscape that reflects a fusion of Shintoism, Buddhism and Shugen-do. These sacred sites, and the spectacular pilgrimage routes that connect them were included on UNESCO's World Heritage list on July 7, 2004 and are known as the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." The pilgrimage routes are well known as "Kumano Kodo (熊野古道)."
Kumano city is located on Kumano Kodo "Iseji" route, which connects Ise-Jingu shrine (伊勢神宮) and Kumano Sanzan sacred area. This area, surrounded by deep forests and facing the Pacific Ocean, is rich in culturally, historically, geographically and spiritually precious heritages; which have been inherited over 1,200 years by the residents. Worshipping nature, such as gigantic rocks, extraordinary thick trees, and countless waterfalls, remains even today with the ancient tradition of Shintoism and old tales of each site. Kumano Kodo "Matsumoto-toge pass (松本峠)”, “Onigajo (鬼ヶ城)” lava coast, “Shishiiwa (獅子岩)” lion shaped rock, “Shichirimihama (七里御浜)” long coast, and “Hananoiwaya (花の窟)” oldest shrine, are all located within a range of 5 km which are all accessible within one day. All of these places are registered as a part of World Heritage Sites.
“Iseji” route branches from coast line to mountain side to reach to Kumano Hongu Taisha grand shrine (熊野本宮大社), one of the Kumano Sanzan. “Maruyama Senmaida (丸山千枚田)” rice terraces are accessible on the way to Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Kodo “Tori-toge pass (通り峠)” runs beside the rice terraces. “Tori-toge” pass gives the travelers full view of 1,340 rice paddies, and this spectacular view has been getting popular among the foreign travelers, too.
