海南市は、2005年4月1日に旧海南市と下津町が合併して誕生しました。 面積は101.19km2。 和歌山県の北西部に位置し、北は和歌山市・紀の川市、東は紀美野町、南は有田市・有田川町に隣接し、西は紀伊水道に面しています。 熊野古道が南北に通り、古からの交通の要衝である海南は、万葉の昔から多くの都人が訪れています。
Kainan City was created on April 1, 2005 through the merger of the former Kainan City and Shimotsu Town. It is located in the northwestern part of Wakayama Prefecture, bordered by Wakayama City and Kinokawa City to the north, Kimino Town to the east, Arita City and Aritagawa Town to the south, and facing the Kii Channel to the west. The Kumano Kodo (Kumano Ancient Road) runs through the city from north to south, and Kainan has been an important transportation hub since ancient times, and has been visited by many city residents since the Manyoshu period.
