They were almost exterminated by Germans. 2 : The town was not destroyed by Soviet (Russian) army but by the RAF (British Royal Air Force). A large majority of people who lived there fled to mainland Germany before the bombings and the occupation by the Soviet Union. 3. It was given to the USSR after WW2.
