I once read in an interview with Shioda Sensei that when he was in college he sparred with a karateka friend. The reporter had asked Shioda Sensei how can aikido deal with strikes? Shioda said that the principle of the techniques still work, you just have to adjust the timing. He said when he sparred with the karateka when he came to punch him, Shioda narrowly evaded and used his arms to sandwich the punching arm at the wrist and elbow and immediately threw him. I thought that was a very interesting approach.
Is it really that difficult? Surely it's all about timing and entering. No one punches and freezes. There are plenty of techniques that work against a punch.
Its why it comes from Ju Jutsu? .... Ju meaning to be soft?... If you don't use physical strength in a technique, there is nothing to resist... That doesn't mean its ok to be weak physically... Its the same with a punch or kick..... The more relaxed you are, the more effective the strike... You cannot move fluidly if you're stiff....
