Maybe if Tom was a good husband and treated Anne right. Then she would have been happy to cook for him, clean for him, run the house and take care of him in kind. But honestly Tom doesn't want a wife or partner he wants a mommy who do everything for him. Like he is a child who is just learning how too dress himself. I wonder if Tom wanted Anne to lay out his clothes the night before work? Or expected Anne to help him bathe as well? Ridiculous!

My grandma taught me the same including how to be a "Lady of the House" I literally did not learn House work until my late teens. Even though we were Middle Class we still had a Maid. I DID learn to cook however. My grandpa would sneak me out to play on the swing set, climb trees, play sports. Let me tell you I was wearing heels from the time I could STAND. My mom was a Nurse so my grandparents were my main caregivers. My mom is in her 60s and she never had this mindset. Hell even my grandparents never really had this mindset. Yes I now have a more traditional relationship and I'm really happy with it. I had both the "Equal" relationship and the more traditional relationship. I feel more equal to my husband now then I did in my "Equal" relationship. Let me tell you how pissed my grandma was when I refused the "High class man" she choose for me! Lol.

@tovelokiwifeodindottir9936 OMG! Same here. My grandmother drummed into my head that a "proper" woman never leaves the house without makeup, heels, and their hair perfectly styled. I rebelled big-time! The look on my grandmother's face when she saw my first tattoo was priceless! By the time we lost her in 2005 (she was 99 years old) my right arm was sleeves, and I had several more tattoos and piercings. She would demand I wore a long-sleeved shirt when I went to visit her, even if it was summer. But, at 99, she lived a long time and saw many changes in this world, and she had more than deserved my respect (because she was an amazing woman), so I would bring a cardigan with me when I visited her. Every time she saw my twins (boy/girl) I thought she would have a heart attack when my daughter was in Jeans, shorts, or anything that wasn't a perfect dress paired with the perfect Mary Jane shoes. Lol My grandmother was raised in a proper Brahmin family. The Brahmins were once associated with members of wealthy New England families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, however, I grew up middle-class. My father was a businessman who entertained clients from other countries quite often. My mother was a stay at home mom of six. It was nothing for my dad to call at noon to alert my mom there would be dignitaries for dinner at six. She handled it all with grace and aplomb and a set of go-to recipes that always worked. My sisters and I learned early how to set a formal table and manners were of the utmost importance! We were never excluded from dinner or expected to be silent while entertaining. Formal table setting is rather a lost art now, but I remember it fondly

I can rem in the days way back when my late mom did say in her days men ate with a bigger knife and fork to a woman as a man’s hands were bigger I’m 65 so who knows what other quirky traditions are out there and still going strong, it is sort of funny but we have come a long way tho…..

No, they didn't. I'm a boomer, so older than you. My mom told me about how she was raised: yes, my grandma and the girls served my grandpa (I don't remember about the brothers). But all the work which had to be done during the day (my grandparents were farmers) was EQUALLY distributed and they helped and respected one another.

I'd like to know precisely when families actually do treat daughters-in-law like slaves? Because I doubt it was done even back in the stone age. This must be a recent thing by people who used to have slaves but had to give them up because of a civil war.

​@@ShannonCarter55 It actually does date back to the Stone Age (or whatever "Age" came first!). For obvious reasons, the men were the hunters, therefore it was left to the women to do most everything else (e.g., plant seeds or whatever, do the harvesting, cooking, etc.). Fast forward to later centuries where it evolved to men going out to work to provide for the family (but hunting money now instead of mammoths!), and the wife still dealing with domestic matters. The upper class wives were fortunate that they had staff to deal with housework, but there was no change in lower class. There wasn't really a "middle class" until after the 1st World War. Whilst recognising the sacrifices made by men, it did womenkind a favour as ladies were encouraged to go and work in munitions factories or any other useful occupation in the war effort. After the 2nd World War, the change was even more noticeable when having servants were no longer the norm. Instead, the upper and middle classes would employ nannies and/or cleaners (the latter known as "Dailies"). Even in the 1950s, women were still expected to be housewives much like some of these stories (but not quite as bad!), and of course still look pretty, welcome your husband home with a kiss and a scotch already poured! I don't think there was an issue with mothers-in-law though, as domestic stuff was taught in schools. Then roll on the '60s and times, they are a-changing! I'm so glad I was born when I was!!
