It's super easy to understand. He was just trying to be friendly, he could tell something became awkward but not knowing the language he just got the "something just got awkward" part. So he interpreted the stop in conversation as subaru thought he was hitting on her. So he just flashed his gf to show he wasn't. What I understood from this is that subaru looks like she plays games.

Evryone is making joke about the "girlfriend" part but from a foreiner's perspective...It can be a way to say they're not here to cause trouble since they already have a girlfriend. Like "I know I look scary looking sometimes but I'm a normal dude in the end". Akwardness is just the price to pay.

@@williambradd1800 definitely a weird move lol but he probably thought it would ease the awkwardness since he would have struggled to hold a normal chit chat in a foreign language. My younger self would definitely have done something similarly dumb. Also, I find this isn't an uncommon kind of conversation topic in southeast Asia, though it would never happen in the UK.

he talked about games, probably because they look similar in age, just to start a convo, only to realise subaru doesn't play football games, so he knowingly stops the convo...if subaru had just mentioned a game she plays he would probably try to add in the convo so time will move, he showed her his girlfriend just to be safe, maybe subaru isn't talking with him because she thinks he is trying to flirt with her so he uses his gf to prevent that, but just made it more awkward instead since subaru didn't realise his intent at all

He probably thought that by talking about his girlfriend, Subaru would find it cute or something and be less awkward. I'd imagine he wouldn't really have many topics to talk about.

@Pucopocre Literally anyone. It's a way of starting a conversation about something/someone you love. It's really not that weird at all. Simple way to answer is 'how did you guys meet, have you known each other long' etc. A client/customer isn't a random stranger.

Vietnamese here. Actually here in Vietnam showing your gf/bf to someone else is not a way to say "stay away from me because I have a gf/bf", but this is actually considered normal in Vietnam as it is a way to say "see, I might look scary or a little weird but fact is I'm a very easy person!". Its something we rarely do but from my POV I think that is what he's trying to express/say since Subaru seems a little tense because of the language barrier (even though the VNese guy knew a little bit of Japanese, enough for communicating but it wasn't very good). P/S: sorry for the bad English tho, I'm not a native.

I can confirm that Vietnamese do have the tendency to show their relatives or friends on the phone even to strangers, and then they will just greet each other like they know each other. I think it rooted from our sense of "everyone in the country is family".

As an American who at 188 cm and 105-110 kg moved furniture in college (18-22) this warms my heart. Although the main movers like me all showed up at once, meeting people of numerous cultures and backgrounds is what I loved the most.

We could go full narrative and say that the kid sees an obvious game streaming setup, thinks "have I randomly happened upon some streamer's house" and tries to do some detective work. Of course, then there's a high chance that the answer is "Yeah, I've been playing Fall Guys.", which narrows the list down to "Any one of literally thousands of streamers."

i had a vietnamese friend when i was in Japan, idk why but he is pretty quiet and awkward idk if it's because of cultural difference or what (i'm Indonesian and we're often told we are too friendly) so i kinda helped him around when he didn't say a word but turns out he is fine with saying nothing and then suddenly saying something and i thought he was just a tad bit socially awkward like i know other vietnamese friends they are instead really talkative and fun to talk to(They're all girls tho, this guy i'm talking about is a dude) so i don't know if it's a vietnamese guy thing? the guy Subaru met really reminds me of him, really really does.

I'm guessing him being alone with the client nervous made him sound like that. He knows the vocabulary, and can reply at a conversation speed, but was probably nervous as maybe he could feel Subaru's opening remark through her eyes.

Based on what Subaru says. Subaru didn't bring her smartphone while waiting the other staff. That's impressive for me. People around her age (at my place at least) can't be separated with their gadget for 1 minute.
