The pugilist world is ruled by the powerful Wen clan, which dominates over the smaller Lan, Jiang, Nie and Jin households. The carefree Wei Wuxian becomes fast friends with the righteous Lan Wangji, and during their adventures, the pair find out that the head of the Wen clan is the evil mastermind behind a series of plots that would wreak havoc upon the lands.
Wei Wuxian’s attempts to protect the innocent members of the Wen clan from unfair persecution leads to disaster, and he goes MIA in the process. Wei Wuxian reappears sixteen years later, and works together with good friend Lan Wangji to solve a series of murder mysteries, eventually finding and defeating the true culprit. Based on the Moxiang Tongxiu's novel Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.

I love how he asks Wei Wuxian why did he hide giving him his golden core, while he's hiding he only lost his golden core for him. Both would sacrifice themselves for each other

No matter how much he said he hates wwx, his actions clearly shows that he love his brother so very dearly. Despite the betrayal he thought he did, he just can't bring himself to cut ties completely with his only other family. JC is a tragic character that's very realistic if you ask me.

JC is someone who have high pride and ambition, yet he needed the simplest thing in life. His family. He wanted to hate WWX so much, yet couldn't because he's his brother. The line between love and hate for him is so thin that he oftentimes mix them altogether. He wanted WWX to pay for making him losing his family one by one and turn back on him by sheltering the Wens, yet he needed WWX to have his back in his toughest time. That's why his actions oftens change between helping WWX and trying to capture him. A truly wonderful character, who you wanted to hate, yet also sympathize with.

The reason I like Mo dao zu shi is that all of the characters have so much depth in their backgrounds. The story doesn’t paint a story of a villain or a hero but rather people with complex emotions, pasts, and lives. Even the protagonist in this story wasn’t an entirely bad person and all of his kindness were acts as hinted by Jing Ling and Lan Xichen. They all had circumstances that pushed them to do what they did.

I love that it's a love story that doesn't rely on love scenes to be great (even in the novel). Don't get me wrong, the romantic scenes are awesome but the story is SO MUCH MORE than that and I think that's beautiful. I also like how it shows everyone has it rough but it will always boil down to your choices/decisions. The doctor branch of the Wen clan for example, they were victims too. Bullied by the main Wens (even becoming puppets), hunted and tortured by other sects, forced to live in the Burial Mounds, forced to turn themselves in and yet they never became resentful spirits (like Mingjue) or tried to plot their way back to the top. In the novel, they even came back from the dead just to help and save everyone. So, sorry MengYao/JGY, you did have a choice. Everybody has.

why is people hating on Jiang Cheng so much?? yes he has a temperament, but, he was forced to rebuilt his sect at a super young age, he didn't get to enjoy his teenhood with his family. His sister died and he had to raise Jin Ling. His whole family died. His loving brother practiced demonic arts and he was worried sick about him, but he just doesn't like to show ppl his weaknesses bc his whole life, ppl have treated him as weak. Hence his temperament. He doesn't hate wei. wuxian at all, he loves him too much

It doesn't change the fact that he was a bad "brother". Unlike him Lan Xichen was always by Lan Zhan's side (good loving brothers). Jiang Cheng is a jealous, arrogant person, he couldn't admit his faults, he always blamed Wei Wuxian about anything, guilt-tripped WWX. Instead of saying "thank you" for WWX's golden core, he continued to blame WWX. I am sure he wouldn't act like that if WWX was his real brother, he dropped WWX, he didn't help people which saved his life (Wen Qing, Wen Ning). Jiang Cheng always thought about WWX as someone who's lower than him (son of servants), because he didn't see WWX as his real brother. Jiang Cheng's parents didn't saw WWX as their own son, their last wishes for their own children and WWX showed the difference. Wen clan planned to get rid of all big clans, so, it was his parents' destiny to be killed, and his mother provoked Wens, she was a strong, but a bad-tempered arrogant stupid woman. She and her son blamed WWX, when it wasn't his fault. WWX just killed a monster, without WWX all those clans would be defeated and killed by Wen clan. WWX was their savior. He lost his life, because he was a good person. Poor Wen Qing and Wen Ning, without their help WWX would lost his life earlier and without him Wen clan would win over other clans and those siblings would be alive.

During the ending part when Jinling asked Jiang Cheng if there's still something he wanted to say to Wuxian, he remembered that time that he sacrificed himself so WWX wouldn't get caught, which eventually led to him losing his golden core. Afterwards, JC simply said "take care" as his final message to his brother. At this point I'd like to believe that their relationship was finally mended because he himself realized the reason WWX never told him about the golden core is the exact same reason why he, too, will never tell WWX about his own sacrifice, the reason why he lost his golden core in the first place. At first, maybe he felt so betrayed when WWX "left" him after all that he has done for him and all that happened to his family. After knowing about his transplanted golden core, it's as if he's suddenly not entitled to the hate he felt towards WWX, like he has no right to hate him because he sacrificed his golden core for him, which led them to this confrontation/ confession scene. However, knowing this also justified WWX in the eyes of JC. In the end, it just shows that both of them would do everything for the other. Sorry for the long rant but out of the all the relationships and bonds formed throughout the series, i really just couldn't let go of the brotherhood of WWX and JC :

Jiang Cheng's sacrifice is not the same. For one he might have taken a risk at the spur of the moment but he didn't realize all the risks and was not ready to cope with the loss of his golden core. Wei Wuxian made the choice in cold blood and deliberately. And put up with the process with patience tolerating the pain and still was determined to adapt even without it. He kept his mouth shut to save Jang Cheng's ego. Wen Ning and his sister risked more when they helped him. Since they risked both of themselves and their remaining family. She was most likely imprisoned because of helping Jiang Cheng while they took Wen Ning elsewhere. Jiang cheng also doesn't have enough guts or wits to stand for Wei Wuxian when he was trying to save Wen Ning. Just a few words hurting his ego and he was easily manipulated in to silence. He couldn't even say that he owed it to Wen ning and Wen Qing and had contributed enough to the sunshot campaign to demand that he could save some people whom he thought less innocent. Wei chose to help her and in doing so he is actually paying back what Jiang owes her too. But since Wen Ning helped Jiang because of Wei only, I guess it was on him too. Wen Ning and his sister repeatedly took risk and helped them to pay back Wei Wuxian's. All three of them have greater sense of gratitude and helpful to people in need without wanting the glory of it than Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng is not bad but he also suffers from inferiority complex and fails to stand up for Wei Wuxian in front of others and reminds Wei Wuxian that he was supposed to "serve" him often enough. In contrast his sister showed more of the spine when she stood up for Wei Wuxian during the hunt organized by Jings and truly considers him as her brother. She is also more aware of Wei's condition not being ok since his return from the Burial ground even though she doesn't know the details. Cheng is not paying attention.

@@thehawkseye3412 I do not agree with this, the issue goes beyond the ego or sense of inferiority of Jiang Cheng, it has to do with responsibilities, first of all WWX does not have the same responsibilities as JC regarding his sect and he himself knows it because he is the one who decides to leave, while JC is the new leader of a sect that was exterminated by the Wen sect, I know that there were innocents within the Wen but there were also within the Jiang, so the responsibility goes first to his sect and his family. On the other hand, if JC had not sacrificed himself for WWX it is clear that he would have been killed because WX had him in his sights due to his behavior, the problem is that both brothers assumed things about the other that were never clarified. Unfortunately the novel is from the point of view of WWX so we do not know much of the development of other characters most what the protagonist assumes.

@@Necrosnape First off- Novel writer described him so in words even. So you can disagree but that's where writer went. Also, WX was still caught not long after that and we know exactly what they did to him. They also melted his core (or tried though) and threw him in that valley. There is no need to make assumption that things must go differently if the order of capture was swapped. He had plot protection. If anything WX had added one more irritation to Wens by taking JC from their clutches leaving them even more annoyed. So it's not like their anger and hatred for him had subsided. I do get that JC had different responsibility. But he went beyond that by torturing and killing people for years for practicing the art. No other clan was doing that. He is his mother's son. Not even once he tried to think what Wens would have done to WX, even if WX didn't volunteer the information. Did he not know what kind of people had taken WX? In the least he should have suspected that they melted his core. Since they did it to him and his parents. ( and they truly did- it was another matter that Wei had already lost it so there was nothing to melt) His sister and Younger Lan paid more attention than him. JC is very competitive and with a complex - that was more the reason why WX could not tell him the whole truth about the core. His capability suddenly took a jump thanks to core he got from WX. That would have been ultimate confirmation that WX was a better cultivator than him. Chip on his shoulder would turn into a cross on shoulder. Price of rice he kept talking about, was paid in full. Finding it out years later with so much baggage and finding out at the start when he needed self confidence the most both would have different sort of impact.

To JC, death is easier than being a powerless weak sect leader thats why he even asked WWX “ why did you save me”. He was expecting death. And he did it for WY.

His happy ending would have been making up with Wei Wuxian. It's obvious he's so sad that they couldn't stay together and guilty that it was his fault to drive Wei Wuxian away.

Well he didn't really sacrifice his golden core I sure he gave himself up but its not the same as knowingly giving up your core with the possibility that you could die or the transplant doesn't work. I understand that jiang cheng lost alot but so did his sister more so than him considering that she just lost her husband and the father of her child and she still threw herself in front of that blade for her brother because she believed in him. Jiang cheng should have done the same , like meng yao said the other secs saw the strength he had with wei ying by his side and they where jealous and envious of it he was just let his own insecurities cloud his judgment to see it and now so much has happen that it beyond a full reconciliation between them and he knows it so . Now he has live with the choices he made that fractured their relationship

Exactly. The rice of the Lotus Clove must be costliest item in the whole Untamed verse. Jiang competed with Lan brothers but he wanted Wei to be a Wen Zhuliu for Jiang clan.

No he didn't "deserve" it for sacrificing his own. Him sacrificing himself for Wei was an impulsive decision. He took the risk as his brother and friend but he didn't know what would happen to him. He was also every emotionally charged and suicidal at the moment and had tried to go back to Lotus clan on his own. Wei stopped him and forced him in to hiding in the first place. On the other hand when Wei decided to give up his core, it was more cold blooded, and conscious decision. He didn't lose it to enemies during a conflict. He learned and prepared and suffered through the process. That's another kind of resolve and spirit.

True. Lan Zhan was a few seconds away from unsheathing Bichen if not for Wei Ying covering his fist and holding it in place (while caressing with thumb). It was only after Lan Zhan eventually released his hold on Bichen that Wei Ying let go of his fist.

Wei Ying only wanted to save those who were left of the Wens. He may have known what he was leaving behind when he chose to fight for them, but Wei Ying wouldn't be Wei Ying if he turned his back on those suffering unjustly. I just wish he had someone to ask for help.

The sad thing is that Wei Ying thought Jiang Chen would help him and stay by his side while Lan Zhan is against them. So it was heartbreaking for both Wei Ying and Jiang Chen that it didn't happen like this.

@@amberxv4777 Wei Ying never expected Jiang Cheng to stand by him...it was very clear to both of them that their priorities had diverged the moment Wei Wuxian had chosen the Wens. Jiang Cheng would have definitely helped Wei Ying had his clan not been in such a precarious political situation. Jiang Cheng had always wanted to protect Wei Ying in whatever ways he could afford to. However, Wei Ying realised that protecting him would be endangering the clan and hence,staged the defection.

I don't blame Jiang Cheng acted like this towards Wuxian. To think he lived and believed that all these years Wei Wuxian abandoned him and broke his promise to him, All his loved ones are dead. Jin ling became his hope after all the pain that happened to him then suddenly he learned that this golden core was from him. He's living his thirteen years in the dark believing the lies and the guilt that he felt when everything Wuxian did has a reason. Wuxian has also shortcomings to Jiang Cheng because he believed that Jiang Cheng would also abandon him but in reality their brother bond is stronger than they think. Because remember, when Jiang Cheng also protected Wuxian from dogs when they still a kid? He sacrificed himself as a decoy when the Wen soldiers almost got Wuxian (That is also the reason why he lost his core). Haaay. That's all sorry for the rant. 😅😂

That's why she returned it later on. She might have accepted it if Wei proposed her & Jiang might have come to understand his father's situation with Wei's parents if so. Would have served him right. Just saying. In short he is lacking and as Wen Ning put it, he would always be beneath Wei Wuxian.

Wei Ying did not fulfill his promised to Jiang Cheng because wei ying had different principles in life.. "Eliminate evil and help the weak." the promised that lan zhan and wei ying made together.

He could've told JC the truth from the beginning. Instead of playing the hero all the time. They might hv come up with a better plan for dealing with everything. What is with these guys not working as a team? So fucking annoying, I tell you! They could've avoided all this if they communicated a bit better

@@ringmadebbarma5906 Yeah, he won't have agreed. That means Wei wuxian did not have his consent. He just assumed that JC will not be able to cope with the loss of his core. If he had taken a moment to think about it, he might have supported him through the loss of his parents. You need to remember that JC was the youngest out of all of them, he needed his parents and they were dead. Everyone has different ways of dealing with grief and some people feel it deeper and are more sensitive. JC was just one of them. The promise was to be together and that includes letting JC know what he was doing and why he was doing it. Was keeping his promise not a principle? And WWX was not eliminating evil and helping the weak, he was paying a debt to Wen Qing & Wen Ning, a debt that JC was not aware of. Remember that JC did offer WQ marriage and a way out when he freed her from prison despite her being a Wen.

And jiang cheng is not sensitive but mentally weak or illness , he know wen leaders want to took all the sect under their control but just he need someone to blame and he blame wwx, he even try killing him. Jiang cheng is just few months younger than wwx. And jiang cheng offer wen qing to leave wen , isn't it selfiness. He didn't even cared for wen ning ( wen qing half life) and wen clans innocent people.

@@ringmadebbarma5906 Wen Qing wanting to help her people is okay but JC wanting to help his people is not? Don't forget JC was a survivor of genocide. And he definitely wasn't mentally weak, a mentally weak person cannot raise an entire sect and a child that is not his at the age of 17 years all alone in face of such tragedy. Mentally weak are people like WWX who cannot live with the consequences of their actions and would rather commit suicide. He killed his brother in law and was responsible for Jiang yanli's death because let's face it, she came to the nightless city to only keep him safe. He should have stayed with the rest of the remaining Wens after Wen qing's death if he was truly that altruistic. Instead he went to vent his grief.

I like jiang cheng is a complex character but if I'm being honest after the core transplant everything he has is because of wei ying sacrifice, he has always been a weak leader he rather follow the crowd than think for himself which is what differs him from wei ying. They called wei ying untamed but the truth is he thought for himself and despite his mistakes was one of the most morally inclined character on the show amongst a few others

I don’t get why he still blames his parents deaths on wei, weren’t those people already gonna invade all the different sects so they could take over ? Also what was wei supposed to do, let that monster kill him ? Why is that his fault ? They all were locked in that cave and wei got them out but was then trapped in there , so what was he supposed to do ,die in there? would that have stopped those guys from attacking their sect? No it wouldn’t have and he is naive to think that it would.

He doesn't really blame WuXian tho', he saved him when the Wen clan almost get him. He told Yanli to ask WuXian for Jin Ling name. He just sometimes need someone to be blamed because of the pain that now he will never be enough for his parents. They died before he can prove his worth, and they always think of him as lesser than WuXian. Plus, Wen clan come sooner because of WuXian. If they come later, maybe Jiang clan can be more prepared and have a chance to survive. 😁

But he wasn’t in a state to analyse all this. He was broken from the death of his parents, he wanted someone to blame during the time and when WWX killed his sister and her husband he hated WWX. He hated and blamed WWX for more than 16 years but when he finds out that he was also to blame for WWX choosing the wrong path, he couldn’t take it anymore. He broke down and blamed himself even though he saved WWX thinking that he was to blame from the very beginning. Tbh I would have done the same if I was in his shoes. He can’t be blamed for how he acted.

WWX is not of no faults. He turned away from his family, break his promised to his sister, make everyone hate him just to save the two Wen. Yes, they need help but not to the point of turning your back to the people who loves you and has been there for you ever since. WWX choice brought death to his sister and additional pain to JC. This also make LZ suffer (physical, mental, emotional pain). Even though WWX would tell them it's his choice, its impossible that those people who loves and cares for him would not be affected. WWX sense of justice brought death. His sense of justice was also his stubborn pride, belief and selfishness. We must accept the fact that WWX was not entirely a perfect or good character. And thus JC has enough reason to hate him.

He blames WWX for playing the hero and smart mouthing the Wens when he was in their indoctrination program. He could've kept his head down and not earned their ire. He could've trusted JC to bring them aid in the cave instead of killing the tortoise and then bringing the Wens down on them. That's the reason why Madame yu was angry. She foresaw this.

Wei chose to help Wen Qing and in doing so he is actually paying back what Jiang owes her too. Jiang Cheng is alive and has a clan thanks to Wei and Wen Ning and Wen Qing. He gave her a comb and had a crush on her and she had helped/ saved him and his friends more than once, ( at Mt. Dafan , in histage situation in Wen clan and then rescued and treated him at her own home). She was imprisoned for helping him and Wen Ning too was taken away and we don't even know how he suffered for his role in the rescue. Jiang acts as if letting her go when he found her in the prison was enough gratitude? He dares to give her a comb but he is not ready to stand up for her during the banquet. He had contributed in the war on Wen enough to make a few demands and save her and her family. But he was easily manipulated in to silence when Mengyao falsely claimed that We Wuxian might have bad mouthed him. Lan Zhan protested but not him. Jiang's clan didn't die because of Wei. His mom was happily beating Wei up till she learned that Wen wanted her home to be turned in to a supervisory branch for him. She was offered to be supervisor there and that's when they clashed and lost to Wens. Wen prince's Gf was after Wei for personal reason but the clan was already a target with or without Wei's existence. As Wen Ning said Jaing Cheng would forever be beneath Wei Wuxuan.

I can't understand why many viewers hates Jiang Cheng, actually at I find him annoying like this but after realising he is also one that suffer a lot.First many people also her mother keeps comparing him to WWX,Then in Lotus Cove,before they're so happy(Jiang Clan) but now he has no one,Also remember YanLi she said JC is lonely that's why he's upset when his dogs are gone but when WWX came they became best bros he may be shy or rude to WWX but we know he loves him so much. I think that's why he doesn't like LZ he feels that WY became close to LZ and left him behind. And especially yes WWX broke his promise, you'll know it hurts so much (I know the reason of WY),But he cant hate WWX. Oh and yeah, he built the Lotus Cove alone in just a young age that's why he can't protect WWX he wants to,but he can't,he needs to protect his clan bcs this is the only thing that his parents gives him,they even sacrifice their lives for the future Jiang Clan. So I think we need to understand each sides not just one side. This is why I love this drama every characters has a white and black sides.

You realise JC just wanted to have his brother by his side. Always talking about being the twin jades of their clan. Him feeling like he lost his brother. Them both apologising and letting out their thoughts is good. At the end of the drama you see JC thinking through things and I am glad he didn’t tell wwx about what really happened because if he did then wwx would feel worse. He knows now how much wwx suffered but he suffered too. He had no one left but his nephew. He knows it wasn’t wwx fault for what happened to their parents. He knows now. Things change. Feelings change and of course it can’t go back to how it was but they can heal with time and reunite with the care they still have for each other. Wwx really does love him a lot. JC is an ambitious character that deserves love, he just was betrayed and felt all alone

He is one of my favourite characters. He lost everything he loves. He lost his sister and his brother. He had the guilt of the golden core and realising that the one thing he thought he did good (distracting the Wen clan to save wwx and their sister) has backfired. In the novel, animation and drama you can see in the last few scenes that he still has cars for wwx which gives me hope that maybe in the later future they can reunite. You can see the the expression JC makes after wwx wipes his tear. I think he feels shocked and tired. I think he is ready to let go of the pain he had towards wwx and wwx also told him to let go. They still care for each other no doubt.

understanding jiang cheng doesn’t make his actions justified!! I hate how ppl are trying to make him out to be better than he really is. He was responsible for own his actions and decisions as much as wei ying does. He didn’t fully trust wei ying because of his inferiority complex. To what extent should we blame the situations for all that he’s done and didn’t do?? everyone has their own suffering but it is ultimately their responsibility. He’s been blinded by his own pride and anger. He knew the kind of person wei ying was so if he really loved him, he would’ve tried to understand him more. And it’s not just wei ying, but the innocent wens. He feels entitled and he’s been playing the victim all along thats why he also deserves to lose the people around him.

I don't blame Jiang Cheng either, but what i don't like is how he believes wei ying betrayed him. I mean...even if he didn't know about wei ying's sacrifice, he should have suportted him and believed in him because what wei ying was doing was protecting innocent people who were family to the wen siblings who rescued them, helped them recover their parents' bodies, protected them and gave them refuge while they were in danger, risking their lives in the process Moreover, JC knew who WW was protecting but he didn't help nor supported his brother.

One of my favourite character, Wei WUxian and Jiang Cheating, both has their perfect and imperfection, both makes mistakes once...they are both victims of how they were treated by their elders...I hate Jiang Fengmian for being the main reason of Madam Yu's abussive towards her children. Madam Yu too always compared JIang Cheng to Wei WUxian.

Why the heck are people defending Jiang Cheng??he was the one who blamed his brother for everything in the end,he was the one who wanted to kill someone who has been by his side for so long,Wei Wuxian gave up his ability to fight with sword,he gave up his golden core for him,he was the one to go thru all pain without any anesthesia and endured it for Jiang Cheng and yet again Jiang Cheng is going out on him for doing all those good stuff.When he belived Wei Wuxian did bad things Jiang Cheng blamed him for doing evil things,when he found out that those were actually all good deeds he is mad again you can't come up with an excuse for the way he is acting,yes he belived a lie but did it really hurt him more than it hurt Wei Ying to watch world hate him and want to kill him?that no one belived him at one point?that the person he considered was his brother tried to kill him?to hear his nephew talk shit about him and hate him because he too thought the Wei Ying did evil things?no. Wei Ying was the person who always helped others,no matter the price he will be paying but somehow everyone hated him and wanted to kill him not because they truly belived he did evil things but because they were all jelause that Wei Wuxian had more power than all of them combined together,so they simply blamed it on "cultivation of evil" and "rebeliance" even tho he never did anything bad with that power,he didn't want to conquire everything he just wanted piece

Wei Ying helped others no matter "the price"-have you thought about what these prices mean to Jiang Cheng?? His entire clan because Wwx antagonized Wen Chao. His parents. Jin Zixuan because Wwx actively chose to escalate. Jiang Yanli because Wwx lost control. Jin ling as an orphan. He's the youngest sect leader ever-at 17. He literally had to rebuild an entire sect without resources or even manpower (since his sect was killed). He was literally the only one left- even all the elders were dead. He had to build an army on his own because Wwx walked away. And JGS and the lot were actively manipulating both Jiang Cheng and Wwx because they thought that the combination of JC doing so much on his own combined with Wwx's genius and unparalleled power. JC always warned Wwx not to be reckless. Wwx was obviously, only trying to do the right thing. But Wwx cost Jiang Cheng EVERYTHING. There's no doubt that Wwx lost just as much. They both did. I'm not elaborating on Wwx because we usually see his Pov. ALSO, Jiang Cheng's inferiority superiority complex and Wwx's guilt/hero complex was a direct consequences of Madam Yu treating both of them like cardboard cutouts and Jiang Fengmian pretending his son doesn't exist unless it's to say he isn't worthy while at the same time coddling Wwx. So even though it's not Wwx's fault (OBVIOUSLY he's innocent he's a literal kid)- his parents used Wwx as a reason to humiliate JC. Literally every day. (Not going into how much they also traumatized Wwx- which is a lot). Is he supposed to let his clan suffer because he loves Wwx?? To sacrifice his people for the innocent wens?? It goes without saying that Wwx is a good person- he was right in saving the Wens. His debt and honor. While JC is a representative of hundreds if people who depend on him. Can he just go where the wind blows?? The golden core. Wwx fabricated a story specifically to save Jiang Cheng (without his consent). Because Wwx loved Jiang Cheng . Was he just supposed to figure out that Wwx became. demonic cultivator out of love for him when Wwx went out of his way to shield Jiang Cheng from it?? ALSO THE FACT THAT JIANG CHENG LITERALLY LOST HIS CORE FOR WWX- AND KEPT IT A SECRET. The exact fucking thing Wwx did. And JC didn't tell Wwx just like Wwx didn't tell JC. Because ~love~. After Wwx is resurrected, was he supposed to welcome Wwx with joy like Lan Zhan did?? Lwj was left with A-Yuan. A symbol of Wwx's golden heart and kindness. JC was left with a dead family at Wwx's hands and an his dead sister's child. They're all 18/19 at this point. Amd also the fact that Jc never actually tri to harm Wwx after his resurrection despite all the cruel words. Going by drama canon, Wwx is FULLY a victim of circumstances. And Jiang is considerably softer. By novel canon, it's rumoured that JC tortured demonic cultivators (unconfirmed) and he is extremely spiteful and vicious. At the same time, Wwx actively made reckless choices and was extremely arrogant and insulting to the other cultivators and wasn't a hero, but an anti hero. In conclusion, they loved each despite EVERYTHING. Now, I think you entirely miss the point of the novel if you see all of them as black and white. Not a single person was perfect (except, maybe shijie and the juniors). Even Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji makes sketchy choices. The whole point of the novel is that people have gray and gray morality. Wwx? Recklessness. Lwj and JC? Selective loyalty. Lxc? Centrist. Nmj? Righteousness without empathy. Literally everyone. Don't watch using rose tinted glasses.
