Man, I can't express how much I sympathize with this song. Try as I might, I just can't get academic shit in my dumb head.

Based on the diary entries, Tame is dissatisfied with herself for not being able to get good grades no matter how much she tries. When she sees Nana dancing with a stranger and their eyes meet, she wakes up suddenly. She keeps trying to have the dream again just so she can see Nanamiya look at her again. The final entries are of her telling her classmates to shut up and that she's finally become the abnormality, the butterfly. I mean, she may have committed suicide, as you can see a vase of flowers on the desk (1:39) she was napping on. It may appear that she is uninterested in what others think about her and that she eventually accepts herself, but she is actually distraught to just be "abnormal" (perfect), in such a way that she acknowledges that while being alive implies she will never be perfect (this is the reason she tends to leave the mirror dirty at the end), and instead ends up killing herself in order to become an eternal abnormal butterfly. The final entry, "I became a butterfly," means she's committed suicide. When she envisions herself as a butterfly, she's surrounded by either chairs or shoes; both are often associated with suicide. She's always sleeping; the entries note her wanting to sleep constantly so that she could be noticed and loved in her dreams by the classmate she's obsessed with. It's quite sad, and it exemplifies the pressures in Japanese culture to be perfect and exceptional. Also, the morpho butterfly has been mentioned to have wings much larger than its own body, making it have a distinct flight pattern from other butterflies because of it. This could be interpreted as a unique aspect or maybe even a sort of abnormality in a sense compared to other butterflies. Even in Hima's drawing for the song that they posted on Twitter for the release of the song, the Morpho butterfly was shown within it. The morpho butterfly could be representative of Tame's longing for abnormality being so big in the end, most likely that the weight of it, in a sense, is so big that she can't support herself any longer for that desire. In the end, she ends up straying far away from being normal, though it's not too apparent with it, but I would just point that out since no one seemed to really do so. This song just gives out the vibes of obsession over perfection, the desire to be better, and how it can drive one insane. I can understand it a bit on how in the mirror she asks herself “who are you?” With the shadows asking “who are we?” But not an answer was given on that night. The final turning point where she gives in to abnormal insanity, declaring herself as “abnormal” as the rest of them with something special about her. She might have ended up killing herself to prove it in, death showing how she’s fully embraced her “abnormality”. And seeing her face and animal print pattern is matched with a certain butterfly’s pattern, it seems that she associates herself with such because this SPECIFIC pattern shows up and the wing span is bigger than her, and the most appealing thing to a butterfly is their colorful wings. Desiring for more could be that she wants to spread wider and be more colorful than everyone. Obsessing over improving and perfection could be that “the greater the chrysalis, the better chance to be noticed.”

I just found this song, after MONTHS. it was on my Spotify playlist and I wanted to find it but u didn't know the English translations, NOW I FINALLY FOUND IT.

I relate to this song so much but a little differently than the real meaning of it. Basically, I always was the "gifted child" who always had good grades, didn't ask for anything, didn't bother anyone, was ok with being alone, etc. But, as the time passes, the "gifted child" is fading away. Average, now everything I do is average. And I can't complain about it because "I seem ok", "I have no reason to be sad", "I'm a person that don't get in troubles, that has a good family and friends"... All of that is true, but that's the problem. Being "normal", "average" or even just "ok" is killing me. I'm in highschool rn and it's getting so difficult to the point that idk what to do to just pass my classes. Idk how to study anymore, idk how to do homeworks anymore, idk how to work correctly anymore. But that's not the worst part. It's that I'm aware of it and I'm seeking for help in vain. People don't understand how much it's killing me. They just brush it off saying that they know how hard school is and that it's just a phase... Mene is unhappy with her average grades. When Mene sees her classmate Miya get perfect grades seemingly without trying, she thinks that this type of perfection is abnormal and tries to become more like her. Mene tries to act more like Miya and tries even harder to become "Abnormal", and gets to the point of envy where she falls in love Miya, realizing it during the dream sequence. OH so that's what the song's lyrics are like. I read an explanation comment in the actual video but it's cool to actually see what the word for word (kinda) lines are. Also the song is relatable. I really don't like how schools make students associate worth with things like grades, it's really draining on me and my friend group. But I feel like we keep each other somewhat sane I think. Or if we all are going crazy it's at least together.

I listened to this song again at age 17, it give me goosebump and I can relate to her so much... I had a best friend, but my friend was too friendly and easy to be close by anyone but I'm totally opposite of her. She got a excellent grade meanwhile mine was average( just like the girl's grade), I'm trying so hard and she wasn't even trying, I cried after the school ended. I feel like I'm not fitting to be her friend, she's beautiful unlike me. She's also smart, my intelligence is average than her. Her family was also good meanwhile mine was average(I love my family), she have a lot of friend while I had to clinging on her. I had a severe depression, but even the teacher couldn't notice it but my friend can. I'm going crazy... She ask me to smile but I can't! I couldn't do it! Is it okay to interpret this as a trans/acceptance of mental illness song despite a HEAVILY implied contradicting story? It's a really, really great song but I'm not great at listening to suicide songs because once upon a time a really great one (ahem, RuRu.) helped in spiraling me into a hospital. I really enjoy it but I'm afraid of thinking too deeply about the actual story and, y'know. 'Course, I already know I'm not very sane but I have no intentions of suicide and i'm unsure if I should keep listening to it, since their are other good Guchiry songs that are slightly less problematic (for me). I always thought of the song as Mene being so tired of being average despite her conflicting thoughts and then snapping; in the way that she accepts herself as Not Sane and using that as empowerment; a metamorphosis. Also the envy of Miya could maybe be interpreted as 'damn it she is so pretty and talented, she is a real girl, why can't I be like her' etc. idk.

every time i come back to read the translation i just can’t help but feel like the ppl who focus on the grades COMPLETELY missed the mark. it’s not about the grades. it’s about being dissatisfied with your existence and feeling empty and numb with no certainty over your personality/sense of self. it’s about jealousy over someone else being better than you and that jealousy forming into an ugly obsessive infatuation as you believe this person has everything you need to become a real person that everyone - including yourself - likes and wants, and moreover becoming obsessed with the attention from others your “brand new me” gets. it’s not really about the grades at all.

I really relate to this song so much especially in school the feeling that you wanted to be noticed by everyone, ive always wanted attention in school bc i hate the way my classmates treat me like dust they looked at me like im invisible the feeling that you also wanted attention the feeling that you wanted tp show how different you are unlike everyone else that you will basically show almost everything just to get everyones attention ive really felt that.
