@minibattleship Type-10 have never sacrificed the armor. They only reduce the volume of vehicle,so it become the lighter than another tanks. Autoloader → remove the space for loader V8 1200hp Engine → reduce the engine space (in spite of 1200hp,because of CVT,Type-10 can keep the sprocket power equal to Type-90) Active suspention → It makes Type-10 can keep high mobility by only 5 rollers So,the armor of Type-10 never be thin,this tank can become lighter than another MBTs.

In terms of high intensity warfare such as the early stages of Iraq, tanks have great use. Even in terms of the later low intensity stages of Iraq, tanks still posses great use. It's in terms of Afghan mountain skirmish warfare that tanks posses far less use in combat situations. The tanks we've been selling are mostly older models such as Pattons and earlier models of Abrams. We still have an enormous amount of tanks in our arsenal.
Hardly believe, but this small tank is the strongest in the world. In spite of not L55 gun nor not using du rounds, the gun is the most powerful 120mm gun in the world. And its armor can bear it's 120mm gun shoot. Combination of the light body and a strong engine achieves the most excellent mobility.
@1992Xenomorph The Abrams is a very powerful tank, there are reports of them rolling over AT mines or and never stopping or just shrugging off direct hits from 125mm cannons on Iraqi T-72 Tanks, but the fuel efficiency problems limit their movement.
The question is what type of armor does Type 10 have in relation to it's lower mass & smaller profile compared to other western MBTs? Is it a new composite or do Japanese actually sacrificed armor for more mobility even further?
It uses a combination of armor. Crystalized Steel makes the core of the armor, which is very expensive but very strong and ultra light, Can wisthand up to three times what Tungsten Carbide can without breaking or deforming. So pretty good cutting edge armor on that tank. It is made with Spark Plasma Sintering, so hence the price tag. And defense modules with composite modules that can be adjusted for mission parameters and swiftly changed when damaged. They include ceramics of different compositions and maybe ERA blocks (Not too sure on this one) It doesn't include a hard or soft kill protection systems for incoming missiles but it does include a laser detection system that releases smoke when it detects lasers trying to "paint" a target on the Tank for missiles, thus making it harder or impossible to lock on target. The main reason for the reduced weight of the Type 10 was for the Tank to be easier to deploy within Japan, as it's laws forbid vehicles in excess of 50 tons to travel on it's roads. It also makes transportation easier as they can be loaded on commercial trucks even when fully armed. This not only makes for a more agile combatant but it makes for a Tank that can be deployed where many others can't. The undisclosed reason for this lightweight heavy puncher is also for deployment alongside the newly formed Rapid Deployment Infantry Unit (Japanese Marines) to counter possible invasions of it's far flung territories like the Senkaku Islands from a chinese occupation. Chinese MBT's weight between 50 and 60 tons and so aren't very suitable for small islands on the pacific. So this tanks offer a lot of firepower, very decent protection against most weapons deployable by land forces devoid of heavy armor, and the capability to fight almost anywhere with ease. Who the hell says that? Lol if there's an original tank design its the Type 10, not many "western" MBTs have an autoloader. I have a bit of an issue considering japan as western, since they're the easternmost country on earth.
@R3leaZ It is also a small tank at just 44 tons it is just over half the weight of a US M1A2. The small size of the tank is probably for fuel efficiency.
This is a tank and not an automobile, built by a different concept and structure. If you're asking seriously the answer is no. Of course there is a common technology, regardless to manufacture.
You may know much about Leclerc, but I think I know much about type10. For example, you don't know that only 3 type10 beated 14 type90 at a sham battle. At that sham battle, only 1 type10 has destroyed while all type90 has destroyed. Maybe, we cannot reach the conclusion on this subject. Last thing, I want to say is that I like french female, but don't like french male so much.
Hm i see the tank is highly mobile (By looking at its speed) so i guess its used for rushing to 1 location to another.. Support infantry and dodge enemy shells/rockets as it swoop.
You mean the tank that hasn't even got a finished model yet and thus we know nothing about its actual capabilities while the Type 10 is actually in service already? Saying the PL-01 for anything is like saying a Leopard 5. It doesn't exist yet in any form that isn't just a functional mockup.
gotta say this tank looks scifi as fuck it only needs a coil gun or some form of directed energy weapon and it would fit right at home in an episode of the expanse

Honestly, I don't know much about Leclerc. However, I guess it's a one of the best tank in the world. I guess Leclerc's vetronics is superior than any mbt in the world except for a type10. But, except for vetoronics, I cannot find a Leclerc's advantage.

+inoue jerry k2 has an l55 gun for longer range, and k2's countermeasure tests havent been shown to the public, for armor the type 10 could be the better out of all of them, they have an experimental type of steel.

longer caliber, more accurate? NO. modern mbt has smoothbore gun, not rifle. too long caliber cause a buffeting of APFSDS and decrease the accuracy. Actually, Rheinmetall's 44 caliber's accuracy is superior to it's 55 caliber, and it's a reason why leclerc's caliber is not a 55, but a 52. And type10's gun is not a Rheinmetall's, it's a newly developped Japanese gun which achieved accuracy and high power. type10 has a 1200hp powerpack, but it's sprocket output has increased than type90's 1500hp.
I dont see why people dont want to join the military because of WWII. There were loads of countries that lost wars, yet ppl wanna join the military. Like the US in Vietnam, for example. Plus, WWII was a long time ago. Why would people care about that? And remember that most of their men in WWII were conscripts, who didnt want involvement with the military either.
@NoOdL3z18 True. Light Weight means less fuel consumption. Heavy tanks like the M1A2 burn through gas like crazy. M1A2 is overrated by internet military fanatics.
Haha actually the armor is a depleted uranium/tungsten carbide/steel alloy composite. If it was made of carbon fiber, I could piss through that armor. But it may have some carbon fiber somewhere else in the tank :)

Kuhaku Yeah you're right, I bet that at least one layer of the tanks composite armour is strengthened using carbon nano tube technology, but this tank is not made purely of carbon fiber. It would be too vulnerable to depleted uranium SABOT rounds. Depleted uranium is just too dense. You need a metal of comparable density, like tungsten, to defeat that kind of round.
20 tons lighter, .7m lower height, .5m narrower, active hydro-pneumatic suspension,5 road wheels instead of 7, CVT, autoloader, etc. the two are not even remotely related.

type 90 is too heavy to utilize except in Hokkaido, so jsdf needed to develop a tank with light weight(have no problem to utilize anywhere in japan and use less fuel) and high-tech. that's why. though it looks way smaller than other country's tanks but this tank is pretty much good.

nope, it isn't. The armour is pretty tought for it's light weight, and there are multiple armour protection levels it can have, like 44 tonnes and 48 tonnes (which is for high intensity combat)

man you need to understand that China won't invade Japan coz doing so for no reason is not in line with its national interest. Also, you need to understand that it is 21st century but not 19th or beginning of 20th century. If China goes to war against Japan, the first wave is not landing, not navy fight, not air battle, but missile attack -- ballistic missile, cruise missile, etc. After China destroys basically all military bases/air ports/sea ports in Japan, as well as possibly all military satellites, THEN it comes to air battle for air superiority. Once air superiority is secured, it is not Chinese navy that fights JMSDF, but Chinese air force. ... And you would never see a tank skirmish between Chinese tank and Japanese tank, coz the real enemy Japanese tanks are gonna face up with is Chinese helicopters. With the US in, China will sure be defeated; but without the US, Japan is NOTHING.
