Hi, I'm Shuo, I'm a native Chinese speaking teacher living in Thailand.
I have almost 7 years of experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and I describe myself as a "Teaching Geek" :P.
=====
In this video, you will finally understand the difference between 想 and 要。
想 xiǎng:
1. to think
2. to miss
3. to want.
要 yào:
1. be going to
2. be going to (more determined)
3. have to, must
To summarize, 想 refers to mental activity, it's an idea in your mind, while 要 is an action that you are really gonna do.

Another thing to bear in mind is that 想 can only be used with a verb, whereas 要 can be used with non-verb sentences eg "which fruit would you like?" "我要苹果". You can't say 想 here unless you add the verb 吃 - "我想吃苹果".

If you watched this video, try to answer these questions down below! Use 想 xiǎng or 要 yào to fill in the blank: suī rán nǐ bù () chī yào, dàn shì wèi le jiàn kāng, nǐ yí dìng yào chī 1. 虽然你不()吃药,但是为了健康,你一定()吃。 wǒ méi yǒu () guò zhè ge wèn tí 2. 我没有()过这个问题。 wǎn shàng wǒ () qù jiàn péng yǒu 3. 晚上我()去见朋友。 jīn tiān wǒ yí zhí zài () nǐ 4. 今天我一直在()你。 wǒ () nǔ lì gōng zuò 5. 我()努力工作!

once again decomposition is key to understanding. xiang is mutuality + hearts. Mutual hearts are? Desire! yao is a woman with a purse. She wants something! Yao means want will and must. So "I would like" wo xiang. "I want" wo yao.

for german speakers: you can compare the xiang to "möchte" (where it is more an expression of wish) and yao to "bekomme" (like when you are expecting to get it) In german you could say both to order at a restaurant, you could even say a third one "will" but it's considered very rude and mostly children use it. ;)

The difference between 要 and 会 is that 要 is a more certain future than 会. It would be something like 要 (will), 会 (might). Between 要 and 得, 要 is weaker (need) and its negation is 不用. 得 is stronger (must) and its negation is 不要. Pretty confusing, uh?...

@@mattgodly4075 not 一只狗?
@chonglisun
@chonglisun 4 года назад
Matthew Godleman 我想要一只狗 will be better. Also the translation of this will be “I wish to have a dog”. “I wish I had a dog” will be translated as “我想我已經有一只狗”. Since “had” is already past tense, we cannot use 要 for this case, instead we use 有 (yǒu)which means “got”.
@jessedudezx
@jessedudezx 4 года назад
@@chonglisun just to clarify here Tony, “I wish I had“ often colloquially used in English to mean ”I want...”, for example, ”I wish I had a donut” can mean ”I want a donut right now”. But that's a good point about 要 and tense.
@paulpaulsen7777
@paulpaulsen7777 3 года назад
Sorry, but there is no real answer here yet for the initial question: 想要 together is the best translation for „I would like to have...“ It’s the polite way to ask for something, like when you are in a café and you don’t say, „I want a coffee“ because it’s kind of rude. So you politely ask, „I would like to have a coffee“. That’s what 想要 is.

I have a question that is honestly very basic, but forgive me, I have learned all my Chinese from self study and watching Chinese media. My question regards the proper pronunciation of 想, you seem to pronounce it "C-iang" but I feel like I've heard others pronounce it more "SH-iang". Is this a regional accent thing? Or am I just mishearing? Are there certain regions where its more common to pronounce it one way or another? Thanks again for all your hard work and your wonderful videos!
