This was seriously good advice. I remember improving significantly when I started watching my opponent's character instead of my own; something that requires mastery and comfort with your own character's movement. A lot of less experienced players, and a lot of people on FG clearly don't pay close attention to that sort of thing, which makes sense. They don't have the comfort and mastery of movement with their character that would allow them to take their eyes off what they're doing. In fact, I would propose that excessive rolling, or rather, relying on rolling as a means of movement, results in a lack of micro-observation of your opponent. It's understandable, though. A roll safely moves you a set distance in a set time, wheras running involves acceleration and deceleration that is much more character-dependent. It also forces you to take responsibility for your character's position at any given time, instead of pressing a single input and having the game do it for you; albeit at the obvious risk of being heavily punished. Therefore, an individual who has not mastered/learned the movement/approach options of a character is more likely to roll for the pure and simple reason that it simplifies movement for them; not necessarily just because they find rolling to be a catch-all way to avoid damage on the laggy FG or against opponents with low reaction times. Thus, I conclude that the roll rate of a player directly correlates with their lack of mastery of a character, as well as with the likelihood that they are watching themselves (to gauge distances before and after the roll) instead of their opponent. Ergo, said player's roll rate negatively correlates with their skill and performance as a player. Of course, this ignores instances of people who don't know how to/refuse to roll as outliers. But that's just a theory.

This is the best Smash advice I've ever heard. Adapting to your opponent mid-battle and focusing on your opponent so you can read their movements seems like the best things you can do. Good stuff! Thanks ZeRo!

In regards to your first point, the auto pilot thingey, I find it really helpful to keep my controller in my line of sight while playing. It makes me realize every time I hit a button that I shouldn't have, such as when I spot dodge or roll out of habits. It has helped me to get rid of a couple of bad habits like that.

I'm wondering if Zero, now without a streak to worry about, will put work into a new character and bring it to tourneys (after the break obviously). I mean, Shulk, Cpt. Falcon, Greninja, Ryu, Lucas... there's a ton of potential top high tiers yet to be developed.

HOLY SHIT, NOt an ANALYSIS

Autopiloting is currently my biggest Smash 4 adversary. Especially when spectators are around I have so much trouble focusing on the match I'm playing all the way through and it always ends in getting read hard and destroyed. I've found listening to my own hype reel of music can help keep me in the game in addition to shutting out the crowd. I always feel like I play better that way.

This is the most helpful video I have ever seen for competitive play personally. I have always had trouble with auto mode so now I know that I just need to really set my mind to it and focus up.

I've been wondering about Dr. Mario.

Recently picked up pikachu and it's the first character I've been saving replays on abd just from that I've been improving positionings and set ups. I didn't notice me doing some of the things such as going auto pilot and not focusing on the opponent, definitely useful to have pointed out!

1. if i play Ganon should I play to disrespect or play to get better? 2. Should mix up what kind of spindash I use with Sonic? (spindash dash shield cancel, spindash that goes directly vertical in place, spindash past opponent, spin shot, and when opponent is shielding spindash into spring or spindash into homing attack.)

Thanks Zero! yeah I have recently started to think of this as sort of an aggressive form of chess. Making wise decisions and keeping an eye out for your opponent, trying to see what he'll do next. I also take notes and learn after each defeat instead of getting salty because its an opportunity for me to grow.

Thanks to ZeRo, I just overcame a massive obstacle that was making me lose every match against even normal players: watching my opponent. I always watched little z's montages and his reads and punishes and I kept saying to myself 'I want to do that!' now, I can. Thank you, ZeRo. Stand proud as the king of Sm4sh.

ZeRo, you're the best. I always have and always will root for you, but I have something to say: you losing was the thing the community needed. While I hate to see you lose, it makes people feel like they can beat anyone and that there isn't someone who they could never beat, so the Smash 4 competitive scene looks so much more hopeful. Thanks Zero! I usually play against my friends and for glory and both usually just use a defensive play style so I set myself into aggressive mode, but watching myself go for constant grabs and shield pressure showed me a lot of wasted moves that I did.

Hey Zero, I have a question. Who would you consider the most aggressive and defensive characters in the game? Which characters have good support for rush-down strategies, and which characters really need to rely on camping to be effective? We've seen you character analysis individually for whether a character is aggressive or defensive, But I would like to see which characters fall on the extreme ends of the spectrum.

Zero you are very humble and I'm glad I subscribed to your channels. All your analysis videos are super informative and teaches me about match ups really well. And this was amazing because I know I go autopilot sometimes and I tend to stray from a character's strengths. I really want to get into tournaments and get more competitive in smash and your videos have helped me become a better player. Thank you so much

Would you ever be willing to do (or do you have already) a video explaining the "basic" advanced stuff, like pivoting, movement techniques, and things like that?

One problem that I struggle with is that I usually play hardcore against everyone I go against. But one of my friends pointed out that I play differently against certain people. I'm way better than them but it ends up being a close game. Maybe it's just me, but I subconsciously play different depending on who I'm going against

Nobody touches this base as well as ZeRo does. I love how he is the best Sm4sher and yet he offers to help the less experienced players. And he is a doing a great job doing so!

Now this is the ZeRo I like to see. I'm glad to have this old guy back. ( inb4 ZeRo never changed ) he seemed very different to me once he reached his high throne. Now that's be been knocked off, for now, he's back to being ZeRo in my eyes again.

I don't think that Zero is upset about losing to Nairo. If anything, I imagine he's glad that it was him that gave him his first loss. They're friends and Nairo even denied being better than Zero when he stopped his streak because they both have that kind of humility and respect. That's why I love both of them as players. I looked at a lot of Nairo games when I was trying to figure out the adjustment from Brawl ZSS to Sm4sh ZSS and I love that Zero made this channel to help other people figure out the game more.

ZeRo does have a point though. Tunnel Vision is a really big one. You might be trying to focus on something like getting to a part of the stage or recovering in a certain way and if you don't watch out then your opponent could be planning something that could hit really hard if you're not ready to airdodge or shield or DI a certain way

Thanks for the tips, I'll certainly keep it in mind, espcially about possibly being too aggressive and playing to a characters strengths and not trying to project myself onto them, I tried to be a hyper aggressive Sonic, and it actually worked in a small tourney till the quarter finals haha, I use Ike more nowadays and it's helped me become more patient and utilize grabs more

This is a really good video. You mentioned a lot of stuff I used to struggle with and some things that I probably should be doing.

The thing with Smash 4 though is that you have to be REALLY precise in your playing as opposed to more fluid gams like melee. You can't just attack, attack, and attack aggressively, you basically have to space yourself out as much as you can, read what your opponent is going to do, and just all around play defensively. I thought I was beautiful at this at Brawl, but looking back at my replays recently, I was definitely never good enough to do it. Its a patient game in comparison, and that is something that keeps hacking away at my lives every time. It doesn't take much to lose a battle. You have to be patient basically or just REALLY creative but again, you have to just find your groove and work around it.

I main Toon Link, I used to mostly play up close and didn't use projectiles as spacing tools, but now I do.

My chess teacher once explained to me that in order to improve my game, I would have to master both strategy and tactics. Those two things aren't the same. The difference is that strategy is about being able to do something that is winning in the long run when you don't know what to do. In other words, it's being able to think ahead very far and come up with a plan. Tactics is about your actions in the short term that are winning. In chess, this refers to things like double attacks and taking out defenders to win material. You can get really far if you know strategy but not tactics. After all, tactics are much easier to master and can be used because of the strategy you're using. If you don't know strategy but you do know tactics, you'll remain a weak player. Smash is much the same, I think. You have to have a plan to get your opponent in a certain position where you can execute tactics such as combo's. But you can't just keep fishing for your opponent to make a mistake without actually thinking about what the result of that will be and what your opponent will do. If your opponent has a plan and you don't, you're going to lose.

When you play around with final smashes, especially mega man, crash bomber can do really weird things at different percents...

ZeRo you should do an analysis on Kirby, specifically about the strength of Kirby's combo game which is awesome, but also Kirby's terrible weakness of kill moves especially on heavy chars. Kirby's hammer leaves much to be desired. Kirby's current "good" kill moves are limited to a good backair near the edge, downair spike of stage, a lucky down b, or downtilt to fsmash.

ZeRo, how do you stop being readable? how do you break habits and identify them? how do you stop them when going into autopilot?

I figured all of this out my self very early in sm4sh, but it's super hard to follow through your own advice. Getting confirmation from the greatest sm4sh player definitely will help a lot to follow it through and stop being inconsistent in it and doubting myself.

thank you vary much! I have been looking for ways to improve my ike and this video helped a lot I now notice after watching this video that I pilot my second stock almost every time, and some times even my first stock. And I don't watch my opponent enough that was vary helpful too.

Looking at your opponent gets easier once you have a good feel for who you're playing so you know where you are just by your movements, so you don't need to watch yourself at all

My biggest problem is I tend to break strategy when a planned attack fails and default to a straight-forward dash attack, leaving myself open to shield-grabbing. That and I suck at finishing off enemies off-stage(and weak offstage game in general).

Nairo is so awesome. I like Zero too, but Nairo is my fave because he plays Dark Pit. I know he is probably better with ZSS but I think its even more impressive when he beats people as a lower tier character. I main Dark Pit so its always great to see Nairo play him.

Its so hard to fully get off of autopilot. I think during matches (to make reads) but sometimes my brain can't keep up with the speed of me and my opponent's gameplay. I usually make decisions by thinking long and hard about them, so I throw that away and rely more on my vision, reactions, and reflexes.

Zero, can you make videos about the different play-styles you talked about in this video? Like one video that covers who all the keep-away characters and some general strategies for them, another that covers aggressive characters, etcetera? I've been trying to figure out who I would like to main since the game came out. It was easy for me to find my main and secondaries in the past games, but this time I just can't seem to figure out my play style or which characters I should be focusing on. None of them feel perfect for me. Maybe I've been mismatching play-styles with characters.
