This band, "Prismriver with H," means a lot to us. The fun dynamics between the members (especially Raiko and Lyrica) has sparked a lot of creativity and headcanon, and deeply rekindled my interest in my own precious namesake. I've never felt more proud to use the name Lyrica! Because I've gotten so much inspiration from Gensokyo's musicians, I'm happy to be able to honor them with musical fanwork!
The quartet made their in-game debut in "Antinomy of Common Flowers," as background performers during the final stage. They are actually the ones who are performing the Yorigami Sisters' theme song as it plays for their fight! There are strong implications that they canonically perform this menu theme as well.
On the AoCF menu screen, the music gradually changes as you progress further through the game. The more routes are unlocked, the more instruments are added to this track on the title screen… and the instruments just so happen to match up to each member of the band! The four different versions of the menu theme, which have all been spliced together for this fandub, are:
0:00: AoCF Menu Theme 1: “Seeds of the Incident" (rhythm - Raiko)
1:18: AoCF Menu Theme 2: “Sprouts of Suspicion" (piano/bassline - Lyrica)
2:32: AoCF Menu Theme 3: “Branches Reaching to the Truth" (violin - Lunasa)
3:48: AoCF Menu Theme 4: “Blizzard of Scattering Possession Flowers" (trumpet - Merlin)
"Blooms of Spirit Possession” is translated from “Hyouibana,” the Japanese title of the game AoCF. Of course, the lyrics are heavily influenced by the aesthetic and plot of the overall game, in addition to expressing the emotional ideals of each band member.
Raiko says: You come into existence suddenly, but later find that you'd like to change yourself.
Lyrica says: The link to your past will never be erased, but you want to make more out of it.
Lunasa says: There is meaning in your sadness, in exploring and expressing it.
Merlin says: If you have fun exploring it, at the end of the day, all that's left is the happiness.
And, with all parts together, this is the new you! The new us!
Beyond this, there are many contextual ways that you can interpret the message of the lyrics. One angle I would specifically like to point out is... I wrote this while thinking about "something that would be Mokou's favorite song." Hehehe. One of my favorite canon facts from AoCF dialogue is that Fujiwara no Mokou is secretly a big fan of this band! So I wanted to make a song that would make Mokou say, "oh wow, they totally get me"... including various sentiments that I imagine she needed to hear at various times in her immortal life. Perhaps you can see the parallels, in that Mokou has changed a lot since making that fateful decision centuries ago. She has had to work through many emotions, and can now manage to repurpose her negative feelings into positive ones (i.e. her fun and cathartic fights with her rival)...
I hope, in some way, the sentiments can resonate with you too.

I'm going to be honest here. As someone who's always connected most with the lyrics and meaning behind a song, I've naturally been a big fan of yours since getting into touhou music years ago. But I'm also kind of slow at interpreting the meaning behind stuff. So often times when you drop a new song I walk away from it with a sense of "sure, that was fine I guess" only to then find myself suddenly falling in love with it some time later when it finally starts to click with me. That's how it was when I first heard this one too. But wow! I think I just spent an hour watching to this on loop and appreciating it more and more each time. From the slightly eerie realization that I relate super hard to the stuff Raiko and Lyrica are saying, to slowly noticing more and more just how deeply each section connects with who and what each character is, and finally seeing how well those varying element weave together into a consistent and powerful whole. One that really does hit home for me in a big way. It's beautiful. I haven't been moved like this in a long time. I almost never comment on youtube these days. Haven't commented on your channel despite being a fan for I think 4 years now. But I had to come out of hiding for this one because I just had to say it. Bravo.

It's great to see how this cover turned out! Adding lyrics to a title theme was an interesting change of pace, and using the AoCF title themes one after another with Raiko introducing one Prismriver at a time made for a really unique experience. There's something about listening to Raiko's dialogue during the quieter opening parts of each track that's difficult to put into words... It's chilling in almost a sublime way. And the line "are you listening?" sends a shiver up my spine each time. I'm not sure if that's what you were going for, but it makes this song mesmerizing to listen to. (I'm sure Mokou would say the same, and she'd definitely appreciate this song and listen to the Raiko and the Prismrivers perform it whenever she could! ...And I hope that, in some way, Layla can still hear them, too.) All in all, while this is an amazing cover with clever lyrics as always, I also think there's something truly special about this one. You and Lori both did an excellent job! It's really nice to see such great RaiLyri content, too, so thanks for that as well!

Ah yes, it's Hourai, the person who actually first planted the seed of our love for "Prismriver with H"... by offhandedly suggesting the coupling of Raiko x Lyrica two years ago. It really is amazing what a seed can grow into! Everyone say _thank you Hourai!!_ Really, thank you as always for your lovely and thoughtful comments. It's especially a pleasure to know that you are listening. ;v; I'm so glad that you get those strong instinctive feelings... Nothing could be a better compliment on an attempt to emulate Prismriver music. ♥ I agree very much that Lori's voice here has a special quality. And the repetition of "Are you listening?" was certainly meant to make you feel a sense of personal stake in the emotions being addressed... or maybe more simply, it puts the song clearly into present tense, a place of mind where something important is "happening now", and that in itself is hopefully engaging. I never considered how they have corresponding instruments for the menu theme. That was a neat touch to have them play when their instrument was introduced. I think ZUN enjoys those instruments in particular, they're practically the cornerstone instruments to most of his music. There's always at least one of them present.

"You can interpret the message of the lyrics in many ways." I think this is because the root of the message is something that affects everyone: self-repression and doubts. Especially in the last part (it helps that it's my favourite so I listened that a lot) it struck me as they singing so the listener hears their inner voice (their soul) and hear them and heed them. The point is, that could be interpreted in a lot of ways because it calls to ourselves having doubts, which is something pretty much universal: - You have feelings for someone and don't know what to do: Listen to your heart (soul) and follow it. - You have to make a move that will alter your lifestyle and don't know what to do: Same, listen to what you want to do. This doesn't mean necesarily avoiding every anxiety-inducing situation, but embracing them and go foward (Take the lead of the nonsense). To not have fear and go on. And depending on the listener's situation, they could interpret that as something according to their own situation.

I’ve… had a rough day today. Its left me in a bit of a dark place, emotionally. So here I am. A song from my favorite game from my favorite series, featuring some of my favorite characters (thanks to you ;])… and of course, performed by two of my favorite artists~! And just like that, I’m all better. And now, I understand this cover’s messages more than ever. Raiko’s questioning of the status quo, Lyrica’s call for change, Lunasa’s cry to let my tears flow… and of course, Merlin’s unceasing optimism. They resonate with me. I feel their weight. A lot of thought went into their voices, and I was nervous about not pulling it off! I really wanted them to feel unique and alive! That was simply beautiful. I haven't even heard this theme before, to be honest theme itself seems prety repetitive, but with vocals and Prismriver Solos it was great. In Animation I love that lyrica's keyboard loosely matched the music, and each sister's part showed indeed the emotion her music is meant to show (all was biased a bit to melancholy but still).

Thank you very much for listening, and for having nice thoughts about it~ To be fair, it's repetitive because it is four different versions of the same theme strung together. The song is only meant to be one-fourth of this length. Even so, I'm glad the vocal combo worked out nicely! The balance of attitudes in the band is very interesting, and I'm pleased that the individualities came across. Lunasa is negative, Merlin is positive; and Lyrica is a bit of a wild card, representing all the emotions in between... (Lyrica is described as generally upbeat, but also sly and worldly, which makes me characterize her with a rather sassy/cynical tone.) So the result is overall melancholy, hm...? The description that Mokou gives of the band's style in AoCF is "nihilistic optimism," which is what I was going for. I hope you would agree with that assessment!

Wonderful as always ^-^ I wonder though, if it's implied they perform both the menu theme and the Yorigami sister's theme, what about the other themes in past games? Obviously Raiko wouldn't have been part of the band prior to DDC since she didn't exist how she is now, but a couple of themes in the early Windows era do seem to fit the Prismriver sisters style. I could be completely wrong but it's an interesting thought

I love thinking about "diegetic music" in Touhou! That is, music that actually exists in-universe rather than just as a game design mechanic. I would be happy to imagine that the Prismrivers performed several other songs throughout the series. "Capital City of Flowers in the Sky" (their PCB pre-stage theme) is an obvious one that sounds like it could be the early echoes of their practice session. Yuyuko's themes are worth considering because the Prismrivers were canonically hired to perform for her. And several menu/ending songs could be interpreted as the theme of some event, banquet, festival, etc that they may be entertaining at. When a character's role is specifically "a musician," and music is so important to the overall series, I really want to get the most out of that.

Big bundle of thoughts! - considering how different they sound, I'm amazed that Lori is behind both Raiko and Merlin - wow! - this wasn't a song that struck me as much when released on Patreon, for some reason; I don't know if there has been any change in the arrangement since then? Maybe it's just my mental state, but in any case it feels mesmerizing now. - oh my gosh I didn't know Mokou being a big fan was canon!! this is absolute fire (literally), and the fact that you wrote the lyrics "for Mokou" really is the cherry on top. - I remember seeing you (and the community as a whole) use Horismriver for a while; what prompted this change to Prismriver with H, if I may ask? - have a nice TouhouFest! It'll be hard to attend from Europe (a harder part of the Western fandom to reach I guess...), but it sure sounds nice :D

Hello hello, and thank you for asking a bunch of things that I absolutely love to ramble about! - Raiko is Lori's natural voice, while Merlin's is her voice pitched up by two semitones. It's also, of course, credit to her own talented voice-acting range, using a much different tone when channeling each character. ^^ Pitch change is very helpful, but it doesn't sell a character vibe on its own. - There were several edits made to this song since the Patreon version. That's part of why it stayed unpublished on RU-vid for so long, because I wasn't fully confident in it. In particular, the organization of backup voices was originally much messier. I cut down a lot of excess vocals (even losing a small part of Raiko's lyrics), so that the beginning would feel cleaner, and the buildup of them all singing together in the end would feel more special. That aside, it also makes sense if a song has a different effect based on your mood, and for whatever reason it's wonderful that it can affect you positively now. - Yessss!! A connection between two of my favorite but otherwise unrelated factions of characters makes me so, so happy! From Mamizou & Mokou's route... Mokou: _"An up-tempo song, but filled with a nihilistic view of life and death. Sounds like a hit."_ Mamizou: _"Hmm. You surely know a lot about them. I guess you are a fan? No?"_ Mokou: _"N- No?... A-Anyway, it's starting soon, be prepared."_ I'm overjoyed that artists have seized onto this charming little detail, and there is actually a good amount of fanart of it out there. Example: twitter.com/motako0103/status/1491061066721157120 - Even before AoCF, the band was first referenced in the print work "Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia." en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Alternative_Facts_in_Eastern_Utopia/Article_and_Interview/Prismriver_Sisters_and_Raiko_Horikawa In this article, "Horismriver" is a name that Raiko herself suggests for the band's new identity. (It may be implied that the name is too Raiko-centric for the sisters to actually agree with, maybe...?) Later, in AoCF, the band does not introduce itself firsthand, but most characters who talk about it are referring to it as "Prismriver with H." So it can be assumed that's how they're advertising themselves now. I kind of still use both interchangeably. I prefer to think of "Prismriver with H" as the official public name, but "Horismriver" is usually less of a mouthful to say in a sentence. - Aw, I'm really sorry about the travel difficulty.;; I hope that Europe gets a similar event someday.
